Pick 14 - Josh Sinn
Port Adelaide - Pick 14

Josh Sinn - Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro

186cm, 82kg Defender/Midfielder

He may have been in some injury hell this year but Sinn has sent me to heaven with this pick (sorry). Have to go best available with my first rounder and absolutely stoked to have got the #4 on my rankings list in Josh Sinn. I feel given his injuries he's fallen unfairly down the list of a lot of people and almost become a bit of the forgotten man in first round contention this year, but that just makes it all the more better for me.

Josh is a line breaking, super quick back flanker who takes the game on and has the best left foot kick in this years draft pool. He excels at hitting targets after a zone busting run and creates a lot of scoring chains by doing so. That run and carry makes him such a mouth watering proposition as a defender, with the capability of running 30m and hitting a pin point pass 40m down the field. His vision and quick thinking on the run make him a stand out for me in this years draft crop.

But what stands out even more for me is his midfield potential. He's spent some time there this year with some success and the sky is the limit with what he could produce in the future. There is quite a bit of a young Dangerfield in the way he moves around packs and is capable of breaking free from clearances. With more development around his midfield craft, that is where I see his long term future. With Port screaming out for a dynamic midfielder to not only compliment Brownlow Medallist Ollie Wines and youngsters Rozee & Butters, he looms as the perfect player to learn from and take over from Travis Boak over the coming seasons. He will add plenty of exuberance to an already solid outside midfield group of Amon, Duursma and Bergman to start with before moving into the centre square in time.

Class, Excitement, Leadership. You beauty.

Only other player in contention was Mac Andrew but this was a clear cut, no brainer decision.

So PMBangers if GWS actually got Gibcus and Andrews on the night, what would your reaction be?
He's already legally deceased. Realised it was happening once he got past 10 and was already fist pumping.

Pick 15 - Mac Andrew - Dandenong Stingrays
200 cm 70 kg
Ruck/ Tall Forward
mac.jpg
Strength:
X-Factor/ Upside
Rationale: So I really didn't expect Mac to slip this far, I was ready to spin a wheel with other players names on it so I didn't actually have to make a decision, but I knew if West Coast didn't take Mac I was probably getting him which was just oh so exciting. I think on actual draft night there's more chance of Mac Andrew at 2 and Gibcus at 13, if that happens I'll do as I promised and throw a parade, you're all invited

Andrew has been one of the more discussed players of the past month ever since Rendell linked him to GWS at Pick 2, and since then we've heard a few other clubs with top end picks linked to him as well. Some people have said the Luke Jackson factor has been a cause of this, I think they're different players though. Whilst Mac's game is reliant on his physical strength and a lot of body work, there's no denying that at 70 kg there's some concerns as to whether he can put on the required size to be able to compete as a KPP/ Ruck at the next level, further than that though, I seriously don't see much of a weakness to him, if I'm being pedantic he hasn't had a standout dominant game, but that's not a concern to me.

His leap is insane, he regularly gets above other rucks ribs to put his knee in and elevate himself higher to win the taps, but for a 200 cm player his ability below his knees is ridiculous as well, making his follow up work from a ruck contest the best in the (admittedly Ruck poor) draft class, and he utilizes it just as well up forward. His basic skills of marking, kicking and handballing are equally impressive for a 200cm player, and his positioning around the ground is good as well, he's not a typical tall 'athlete > footballer' selection, he's pretty well developed with his overall football craft.

Also Considered: Jye Amiss, Arlo Draper, Mitch Ownes, Sam Butler, Campbell Chesser, (special mention to Darcy Wilmot who I rate really highly but wouldn't have taken due to our Medium Defender depth)

Dear lord those highlight are impressive. His footy IQ looks really good, taking the right options instead of the easy one in a couple of those plays. Looks like he will be the steal of the draft.

Pick 16 - Jye Amiss
Pick 16 - Brisbane - Jye Amiss
195cm/83kg
East Perth/WA

I think Amiss presents a bit of value in the mid teens and am pleased to be able to get him in with my first pick. I think stylistically he's comparable to Bayley Fritsch but with the extra size there's probably more upside. He's incredibly strong on the lead with good pace and clean hands and his finishing in front of goal is high quality. I think he operates at his best inside forward 50 but he's not incapable of getting on a long lead and marking up the ground.

I think the Lions are in a strong position to develop a key forward as they can afford to balance patience (some positional depth exists) with opportunity (Hipwood's injury). Brisbane is strong through the middle which is great for a young key forward and the talent that already exists should allow Amiss to operate against the third or fourth defender. I think that presents a really good opportunity for him.

Pick 17 - Jacob Van Rooyen
PICK 17 - RICHMOND TIGERS - JACOB VAN ROOYEN - 195cm 89kg - FWD/DEF

1634605626904.png Image thanks to Gratees

Jacob is a (Nick Reiwoldt style) hard running type of player who gets up and down the ground from the forward line and in defense this year, at times, he showed his poise and class in strong marking intercepts and rebounding skills. But you will soon hear that it is another Reiwoldt that he tries to emulate.
A member of the AFL Academy, State rep team and National Combine invitee he does have a lot of suitors waiting to select him.

The lifelong Dockers supporter said it was surreal to be training alongside club greats Nat Fyfe and David Mundy earlier in the year, although it is a Richmond spearhead he idolises when developing his own craft in attack. "I like Jack Riewoldt and the way he always jumps at contests. He doesn't always mark it but he is always there making contests and he's also a very good player on the lead," he said, and being strong in the contest is Van Rooyen to a tea, if he isn't marking it, the pack is being crashed and the ball is coming to ground.
Making this, best available/needs pick even more special to the young man. He will be able to learn and develop next to his idol and then take the mantle.

He takes plenty of marks, also tackles and has a good set shot routine, but to add to that he also looks for better options and plays as a team orientated player.
Jacob suffered glandular fever towards the earlier part of the year but has since then resumed his on field duties and shown very good adaptive skills in learning a defensive role. He has a booming kick on him, and in his recent WAFL Colts grand Final couldn't quite get his side over the line with a four goal performance.
Welcome to Tigerland Jacob !

Now sure, he dropped down the board quite a way, but I'm not enthused about Brisbane taking a specialist key forward who shows little capacity to play in defence. He probably won't crack the best 22 for the next 4-5 years.
Personally, I wouldn't pass on a key position talent because he won't crack the best 22 for a few years. I'm confident in his ability to play forward at AFL level, so the fact he's shown little capacity to play in defence is not a concern for me.

I think that there is a reasonable chance this happens in the draft proper.
There are only a few teams who may take him.

With riewoldt and tarrant well into their 30s this one mskes sense.

Pick 18 - Sydney Swans

Darcy Wilmot - Northern Knights /Vic Metro
182cm - General defender

Solid selection at the range personally have gone for a mid but most were off the table, my only query is 182CM is who is he replacing? We need true KP defenders really, alternatively expect us to go small.

We have no shortage of running halfbacks.

Yep, like the player but not sure Sydney is the team. Might be best available so on that point you might just take him, but I'm just not sure, we have a zillion half backs

Yes he could be best available for our pick but in this case I would rather go with the next best available if he fills a need. No point drafting players that you already have a good supply of, especially since the half backs we have are also on the younger side so they won't need replacing for quite some time.

We have no shortage of running halfbacks.
Who is in the plethora that can play lockdown and also rebound that will be there in the next 5 years?
Players that have been defenders or apart of the backline.
Rampe - close to the end
Fox - a bit part player, isn’t a long term answer.
Mills - moved to the midfield
Carruthers- delisted
Gould - hasn’t been given a game in 2 years, question marks whether he’ll make it.
Dawson - gone
Campbell- will eventually end up in the midfield or forward in a year or 2.
