I'm kind of frightened to ask but how is McGov going. Its been very quiet. Is he training, is he fit, is he a round 1 prospect?

It’s hard to see who starts round 1 but I can’t help but think Cottrell is close to a call up. His energy and tank could be a massive asset against the Tigers move it forward at all cost game plan.
Spitballing a bit but he could make difference in stopping Dusty getting any real momentum.
Yeah, nah.

I'm all for talking up our young players, but this is next level fantasy stuff.

Looking like a bust. Talented but this will be year 3 and what have we seen but an generally unfit, injury prone player that has been gifted games. Not great.
People said the same about Daisy. He came good eventually.

Not sure Gov will ever become a star for us, but hopefully he can get a clean run without injury for a couple of years and provide us with that 30+ goal third tall.

No offence to him? But if Cottrell is in our best 22 in round 1 we are not the finals ready side most of us think we are.
I get what you're trying to say, but I disagree.

Judging by Teague's selections last year, he doesn't seem like the type to 'gift' players games. If Cottrell is in the rd 1 side, I can only assume he's worked his butt off and deserves it.

Surely the daisy story can't be held up as an example of success. 4 or 5 years of absolute dross (due to injury, not effort) for 2 serviceable (but certainly from amazing) years all for millions of dollars and a list spot.

Not sure of Govs contract status (this is possibly his last?) but if he doesn't have a good year I would be moving him on one way or another. Needs to be playing for his football life.

It was a slight hyperbole but regardless, as a 3rd year player in 2019 he was consistently averaging 20 possessions a week (plus the 35 touches against the Dogs), and 4.5 tackles a game too. I'm thinking that now with the recruitment of Saad and Williams, it allows SPS to develop his run and carry off half back and model his game to theirs.

The frustrating part is that it seems during the early stages of this rebuild, we were bringing in too many midfielders and not enough small forwards/defenders. Fisher a midfielder, re-modelled into a small forward. Gibbons a midfielder, re-modelled into a small forward. Cunners a midfielder, re-modelled into a small forward. Samo a midfielder, re-modelled into a small defender.

Now I'm not saying we shouldn't have taken them, but some smarter recruiting would've been nice. It would've been better imo to target some natural small forwards/defenders back in 2015-18.

Anyway... going off on a bit of tangent. Just hope that the likes of LOB, Cunners and SPS don't turn into the next Kane Lucus, Matty Wilson and Blaine Boekhurst.

I think your over value Cotters a bit.. Dusty would annihilate him.
Talent and power-wise, no contest. Cottrell has that mad glint in his eye that tells me he'll do whatever it takes to not be beaten though. We wouldn't be asking him to get 35 touches and three votes, just to take his opponent out of the game.

It'd be an interesting experiment to be sure.

Kind of happens across the league though.

Aside from key position types and a handful of genuine specialist type players, the kids that get drafted more often than not play in the middle in their junior years because they’re the best players in their teams.

Plenty of small statured kids that have to adapt because their body type can’t play inside like they did in juniors. Or players that were mids at the lower levels on talent when at the highest grade they’re really meant to be flankers/smalls/etc.

Short of making him play on talls, I think Dusty would be just about the worst match up for Cottrell. They’re kind of ying and yang here; Cottrell’s strengths aren’t going to help him line up on a power athlete who’s such an instinctive player, his game is more about big moments rather than repeated efforts and lots of running.

You’d want Cottrell lining up on someone like Gaff, Hunter, Langdon, Phillips, or even a Jamie Cripps; someone who runs up and back all day collecting the ball and distributing, putting themselves in positions to provide an option or even guarding space. I think that’s the sort of match up that would suit him and actually play to his strengths.

Essendon members are getting a live stream of our practise game Thursday. So where’s our access?? Very sh*t by the club to allow an Essendon camera into our home ground if we aren’t getting the same.
Looking around before you throw the toys out the cot is a good idea, considering Carlton posted this 30minutes before your post... :tearsofjoy:

Essendon supporters used to say the same thing about Dean Wallis
Im not saying he won't develop into a decent player. Hopefully he does. I want all our players to do well.

But right now he is no Dean Wallis.

Has alot of work to do, and needs to go past quite a few players he is competing for a spot with.

Will be shocked if he is picked round 1.

Cottrell should be sticking closer to Ed Curnow than Ed does to his opponent.

There's a massive opening over the next few years for a negating mid as Ed drifts into the sunset....although the way Ed's travelling, he's got another 200 games left in him...
