They won’t like the guy sitting on the bench not playing footy part.

This is a short term fix I think (not surprising considering they’ve announced it a day before the season starts like the Mickey Mouse league they are..).

How is an injury sub of any sort a short term fix?

Maybe they can swap at half time and a fit player comes off and they becomes the injury sub if not already needed?

In any scenario an injury sub is allowed they will be warming the pine for some of the match.

Plenty of soccer players sit on the pine

So this season will define the next 5 years?

Like really?  :drunk: :drunk:

Remember that season where we flopped, retired Priddis, Mitchell, Hill and others. Cleaned out some of the older, slower players. I recalled all the "experts" saying were entering rebuild territory.

You campaigners all know what happened next.

List management is a constantly moving story. You draft players 3 to 4 years before the established player retires. Rotham > Hurn, O'Neil > Shuey, Duggan > Redden, Oscar > JK, H Edwards > Gov.

And then you chase trades to improve areas of need. Kelly, Witherden, Langdon.
I can only apologise for having a gut feel about something. I'll try to be more astute in the future.

I can see Waterman doing some sub time. Very versatile and assuming our forwards remain injury free, he may struggle to get a regular gig. Has a lot to offer. Would keep him for home games and Ahchee for away games so both get WAFL minutes.

Short term fix as in it will be exploited by desperate coaches looking to gain an edge and then will need to be changed.

With a concussion sub lets look how the rule could be exploited.

A player fakes a concussion, is subbed off to get assessed, comes back a quarter or two later after cooling down / freshening up?

So you get two players playing say 80% of the game.

Well chances are if its a gun player swapped for a player picked # 23 that isn't a win, a team playing a lessor player than a gun player. If the players are similar in ability no foul, no harm done.

If a player is subbed off and fails a concussion test then they are out for 14 days. All good, system works.

A player with another non concussion injury (leg) is subbed off but claims concussion. Well if it was an ankle or shoulder it would be reasonably obvious where the injury was. If a club tries to be cute then the AFL only needs to refer to the doctors report and treatment to see it wasn't a concussion injury.

It is the injury sub that could be misused. Easy fix is you use the sub the player subbed off can't return. If the injury is that bad to be subbed off then they miss the next game.

Been thinking about Zac Landon’s game v Fremantle before he got concussed. On reflection, he was pretty good. Was crumbing at the foot of quite a few contents around the forward 50 line and quick to distribute an effective handball. Also remembered he opened the game with a very strong overhead mark on the lead inside 50. He does look like he has the right kind of intensity we need from a small forward. Accordingly I’m changing my best 22 to have him in ahead of Petch.

I think he’s ahead of Petch and probably more chance to put the squeeze on Jamie Cripps position if Jamaine Jones is also in the team.

Petch is probably the best chance if they decide to push Liam Ryan up the ground (likely, he looked amazing last week), and they need a small to stay close to goal.

I guess if the ‘can’t play next week’ thing doesn’t work then ‘2 Premiership Points Deducted for improper use of injury substitute’ might?

I kinda the whole thing is unnecessary. The players more than likely won’t like it (like the shitty sub role we had a few years back), and the only ones that will like it are the coaches, who get an extra magnet to play with, and the commentary team who get to hoot and holler at the prospect of someone getting subbed out.

If a player is injured and a sub is available they are more likely to put their hand up and say 'I'm no good, get the sub going' rather than forcing themselves back on the ground to not let down their team and mates.

Pro's and cons each way....

Meanwhile Shuey is like "It's only both hamstrings, I've got a third right? PUT ME BACK OUT THERE!!!"

This new rule definitely won't be abused by coaches in any way, shape or form.

I'm glad the AFL have put thorough and rigorous testing behind this rule.
