Petch was great in the preseason game.

Lock for Sunday.

I’ve watched the pre season game 3 times now.

What stands out is petchs improved ability to get his hands on the ball compared to last year.

He still over cooked a couple of his disposals and missed a couple of targets, but was exponentially better than he was last year.

Both Petch and Langdon were very good vs Cockburn.

Langdon was ridiculously clean gathering the ball off the deck while most fumbled. Very one touch and smooth (opposite to Cripps)

Petch played his first 4 quarter game since God knows how long.

Coincidently Jamaine was fairly poor. You definitely wouldn't be picking him over either of the others based on that one game, but he's got runs on the board.

My take on the new medical substitution rule is that it could be filled by players close to retirement needing to get those extra games to their name. For example, if a player like Shannon Hurn was struggling with the pace of the game but could contribute for shorter periods then I’d have him as the sub. In normal circumstances he might not get a game but if he is the sub it counts as though he did play. He gets his 300 games and the younger guys get experience with him sitting on the bench with them.

Somehow I don't think Hurn is the type of bloke who would like to chalk up 300 by sitting inactively on a bench.

Very interested to see what our small forward mix is with Langdon, Jones, petch and cripps and what role Ryan then plays. This will also have a domino effect on our ruck situation with who rests forward Nic, Oscar and Vards and how tall we are up front.

Not every forward needs to kick goals.

If Langdon can provide a contest at ground level, tackle and create repeat forward entries/stoppages in our forward half he is doing a great job.

Actually, no, every forward needs to kick goals. It’s why they’re in that position on the ground, and it’s the thing that wins games. I get what you’re saying, but Langdon does need to up his goals tally - his highest in a season is 21 goals, and that was in his first year.

If I'm being totally honest, if I was to hazard a guess at to who'd be the 23rd man, I'd pick Brendon Ah Chee. He's in his mid-to-late 20s so there's no need to worry about development being stalled, and he played almost all of the 2020 season so it's clear West Coast are willing to give him a shot.

There is a lot more to being a forward then just kicking goals. And there are indicators other than shots on goal to measure whether a forward is doing their job.

He didn't kick a goal last week, but he played the exact type of game that will see him get selection.

We have 6-7 forwards. Not all of them are going to kick a goal every game, or average that across the season.

We have so much scoring power through Kennedy, Darling, Allen, Ryan, Cripps.

What we didn't have in 2020 was players competing for I50 ground balls and locking the ball in. If it wasn't a mark inside 50, the ball would walk out of our forward line.

Langdon won't average a goal a game. If he kicks 15 for the year but applies pressure in our forward half and creates stoppages and turnovers in our forward half through pressure and tackling he will play every week (until Rioli's suspension lifts in time for finals).

What happened in the EF? Godfather32 any idea?

I get that, but the defensive and offensive aspects of the game don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Being defensive doesn’t have to come at the cost of kicking less goals. Think of Eddie Betts.

Defensive pressure in the F50 is just as important as goal scoring, I just think the importance of goals can’t be overlooked.

I personally think Langdon can substantially increase the volume of goals he kicks. He’s only, really, played one full season in the AFL so far, and the forwardline he did play in IMO didn’t utilise him well enough.

He was described as a Mark LeCras clone in his draft year for a reason, and I think he‘ll shine in a structure like ours.

I think he substantially improves our forward line and if he brings pressure could increase our ability to score, I'm just saying that his actions on the field could lead to goals, but he may not necessarily be coming off his boot.

Expecting a goal per game off the boot of a defensive forward in a team where he would be 5th or 6th forward feels like a very high benchmark.

To put it in perspective, Oscar averaged 1.2 goals per game in 2020.

For Langdon, I would think his KPI's would be a lot more to do with tackles and pressure rating in terms of how coaches and match committee will be reviewing his performance rather than goals kicked.

Petch is a massive unknown for us and in reality why we signed him for another 3 years, always a player who may take time.

If he can fully unlock his potential and develop half a footy brain he can be a match winner. Oh, plus stay fit.

He looked proppy when he was jogging...what actually causes OP? Tackling?
Lots of factors but basically it is physical stress, particularly lateral forces, pulling on the cartilage that basically holds the lower two halves of the body together. Ballet dancers also get it because of their job, like athletes.
Not a great second hand market for something like that mate.

Understandable really.
Only a real prick would say that.

The opening paragraphs of this article talk about a meeting of all the coaches held on Zoom, where Clarko convinced Hosking to look at the injury concussion. The shocking thing is that they held it at 5am Perth time, so naturally Simmo and Justin Longmire were absent.

Sometimes it might seem that WA clubs have a persecution complex, but shit like that is like a slap in the face. There are companies all across Australia that can manage a 3 hour time difference, but not the VFL.
