Round 4 (vs St Kilda Saints @ Marvel Stadium [Docklands Stadium])

WCE-Selection-2021-R4.png

A single change for the outfield 22 with Shuey out for surgery and replaced by Waterman.

Langdon is omitted from being the substitute, with Winder named for a debut that may take place without him stepping foot on the ground.

Once again, the absence of the captain hampers the strength of squad through the middle considerably.

Hurn takes back the highest ranking position overall despite his early injury against St Kilda.

Allen moves to a new career-high ranking and Kelly consolidates himself inside the top 10 for onball midfielders.

Elsewhere in the competition, the Bulldogs now have 4 of the highest 8 rankings for onball midfielders.

Round 5 (vs Collingwood Magpies @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

WCE-Selection-2021-R5.png

Injuries continue to take their toll, forcing more disruption to the squad.

Hurn, Ryan and Petruccelle each make way through injury and Winder is omitted after his substitute debut against St Kilda.

Coming in are Witherden for his West Coast debut, O'Neill, Langdon and Vardy.

Jones has been named as the injury substitute.

A comparatively weaker team for what now looms as a must-win match.

An exceptionally tall team, with 8 key-sized players selected - which raises questions of its ability to run out the match competitively after the disastrous second half against the Saints just six days prior.

Hey Dylan82 . For some reason in the squad selection I can't change injuries to off. Can this be fixed somehow?

Ratings updated from Round 6.

Pretty much anyone who played in the debacle against Geelong has suffered a hit to their ratings.

And yet the injuries continue to mount - the best squad that is available for selection looks awful.

Elsewhere there has been a major review undertaken of this system (which was meant to have been completed during the offseason), correlating it against other system outputs, coach and Brownlow votes and match outcomes.

The result validated the effectiveness of this system, however it was also identified that midfielders with high scoreboard impact but comparatively low tackling figures were being under-represented.

As a result, a third category of midfielder has been added to accommodate this - Forward Midfielders, which is currently headed by T.Greene of GWS.

Round 7 (vs Fremantle Dockers @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

WCE-Selection-2021-R7.png

Carnage.

McGovern and Barrass join the injured ranks, leaving the defence utterly threadbare.

H.Edwards comes in to play his second AFL match as a result.

In attack, Kennedy and Petruccelle makes their returns with O'Neill omitted as a result.

Ainsworth remains listed as the injury substitute.

So x2 key defenders out, with x1 coming in; and x2 forwards coming in, with a midfielder out.

Can't really say these changes make much sense.

It does not bode well for the chances of the club to continue its Derby winning streak.

The selection can only manage an F rating - and is easily the lowest such rating by an Eagles team since this began in 2015.

Round 8 (vs Hawthorn Hawks @ M.C.G.)

Ever more depleted. Injuries continue to rise without anyone returning.

Duggan and Vardy join the ranks on the sidelines.

Ah Chee and Williams are called in as replacements to make their season debuts.

Foley replaces Ainsworth as the injury substitute.

The selection again receives an F rating - even weaker than last round.

Gaff and Darling leading the charge up the rankings despite so many team-mates missing after consecutive victories for the first time this season.

The imminent return of both McGovern and Barrass bolsters both the defence and the rating of the squad overall.

With his club winning 8 matches in succession to begin the season, Melbourne's Petracca becomes a new holder of the highest ranked player overall.

Round 9 (vs Adelaide Crows @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

WCE-Selection-2021-R9.png

McGovern and Barrass both make their returns and the squad is improved significantly as a result.

H.Edwards loses his place through no fault of his own for the premiership talls, whilst Foley who substituted last week is also omitted.

Langdon is moved out of the playing 22 to be named as the injury substitute this round.

For the first time since Round 4, the selected squad manages a B rating.

Ratings updated from Round 9.

With three wins in a row (albeit against some poor opponents) much of the squad is moving up the rankings with Darling at its front.

Hurn and Ryan are ready to return and improve the team, but that is tempered by McGovern's injury.

McGovern returns to the top of the rankings list, but his injury is likely to ensure that it is not for long.

Squad Selection:

Round 10 (vs Greater Western Sydney Giants @ Giants Stadium [Sydney Showground])

WCE-Selection-2021-R10.png

Hurn and Ryan make their back into the squad from injury, but that gain is mitigated by the losses of McGovern and Witherden.

H.Edwards comes into the squad as the replacement key defender.

Langdon, last week named as the substitute is omitted, whilst Jones is shifted from the squad 22 to the bench as the injury substitute for this match.

The forward line receives an A+ rating, but the question shall be can the rest of the selection provide them with enough supply to get a fourth victory in succession?

Hey Dylan82

Just curious... AFL Player Ratings has Petruccelle as the 5th best gen fwd this year but your system rates him D.

Why would you say that is? Is it the relatively small sample size? his poor 2020? Different emphasis of Different stats?

Petruccelle's rating here is to an extent being pulled down by his poor 2020 (ratings incorporate back to Round 9 of that season); as those matches are expunged from being included and his improved form this year continues, his rating shall continue to get better and will likely break into C ground around the bye, if not before.

The main reason however behind his ratings being so low is (as you mentioned) that there must be a different emphasis on the statistics used under AFL Player Ratings than what is utilised here.

In the case here, Petruccelle is let down across the attacking positions by his performance (a lack thereof) in the following statistics:

Forward - Tall: Contested marks, marks
Forward - Small: Goal assists, marks inside 50, tackles inside 50
Forward - Midfielders: Score involvements, metres gained, inside 50s

To be honest, I really don't know how they [AFL Player Ratings] have come to rate Petruccelle so highly for his performances this season.

So far in 2021 his goal kicking average per game is outside the top 30 in the competition; score involvements are outside of the top 250; has made just 4 tackles inside forward 50; taken just 3 marks inside forward 50 and has contributed a single goal assist.

I have a feeling that his rating there may be boosted due to his current goal kicking return of 12.1, which is the best in the competition among players with 10+ shots on goal this year - however a majority of those goals have come from less than 10 metres out and are a hardly a true indicator of performance.

I think you're right the 12.1 accuracy is probably the main reason he is rated so highly in the afl player ratings.

Also, I reckon his disposal to score involvement ratio would be quite high.

And his contested possession rate is high.

And to be clear I rate Petch highly and I think he is having a great year but I would not have placed him in the top 10 gen fwds. Maybe top 25
