Teams 2021 St.Kilda Best 22 (assuming all players are fit)

C: Hill Hannebery Jones
R: Ryder Steele Crouch

I went Hannebery for experience.. but maybe Hunter Clarke to just absolutely find some space outta nowhere and pull off his usual magic.
We can assume that those 6 would be there for a centre bounce.

But around the ground Clark better be involved, hell would love to see Clark in Hanners spot.

You do all realise Gears will be best 22????

Probably right based purely on the amount of player management i think will go through the team. We have a large amount of concerning hamstrings.
But based on barrels team below, who would you drop? Considering you said it was spot on and doesnt have geary

Don't think higgins would be impressed if we lured him over to not start. Paton and Coffield improved immensely and played basically every game last season, would be hard done by imo.

My guess is Long but he provides much needed rebound and aggression. Or battle, but hes going to be a beast and is our best utility should anyone get injured forward or back

If gears plays defensive forward with the amount of firepower we have at full strength, i would be shocked.

Tom Simpkin played only a handful 2013/14 , Sam Fisher played more, Sam was good remember. I actually rated Tom as a pure stopper.
I can't remember Stanley playing chb ever.
Lonie afl thas never kicked as many goals as Saad did in 2013 or 2012. 28 in 2012.
Dunstan played most games in his debut year 2014.

Ed Philips in my best 22 every day.

Not in mine, but i thought he was handy depth.
Still only 22 so way more upside than 24 year old Daniel McKenzie. At this stage we have an idea of what Bytel can do, but no clue about how effective Byrnes will be.
Pity we had to let him go.

So, like many others, I'm naturally pessimistic about the Saints chances before the start of a new season. Every year I look at our team and think we arent up to it. Last year I was the same - thought perhaps at best we could scrape into the finals if everything went well.
But looking at the potential best 22 sides that are listed above.... for the first time since 2010 I actually think we can win a flag. Now I might be getting a bit too far ahead of myself, but surely the $18 available on betting agencies is massive overs?

With the new limits to interchange, i don't mind our list.

a) It could make an argument for Geary to be in the side, will Ben's tank be big enough to run out games?
b) We have the likes of Gresham , Higgins, Steele, and Billings, who can lower their workload ( i don't think the word "rest" really applies in the modern game ) in the forward line.
c) Some of our big guys seem to have a good tank, Battle certainly, but Marshal is no slouch either.
d) Hill is renowned for his end of quarter efforts.

I don't envy them in the pre-season with some of them needing to improve their tank. Could also make it hard for Dunstan to get a game.

Good point re: Hill, the AFL did us a solid there by effectively raising his value.

The intriguing one for me is Sincs and how he might fit in. From memory has an excellent tank and is usually up there in total ground covered per game. Had huge wraps on him a few years ago but he just doesn't seem to find the ball enough; but I wonder if that will change with the lower interchanges.

Wouldn't mind the idea of of him and Hill as the two primary wings and Billings playing more of a HFF role.

I don't think we've ever had such a clear cut best 22.

B: Paton, Howard, Wilkie
HB: Coffield, Carlisle, Long
C: Hill, Steele, Jones
HF: Billings, Marshall, Gresham
F: Butler, King, Membrey

Foll: Ryder, Crouch, Clark
Int: Battle, Hannebery, Higgins, Ross

Reserves still on the list

B: McKenzie, Joyce, Geary
HB: Roberton, Clavarino, Webster
C: Connolly, Dunstan, Sinclair
HF: Kent, McKernan, ***
F: Lonie, ***, ***

Foll: Alabakis, Byrnes, Bytel

Adding Frawley would mean that our depth in defence is very good. We have Sinclair, Dunstan, Bytel and Byrnes as okay midfield depth and McKernan was clearly required as forward/ruck depth. I think we should be looking to uncover the next Ben Brown/Marshall type state league tall who took a few years to mature to provide additional forward/ruck coverage as well.

I'm hoping that we only go with one specialist small forward in Butler with the rest being mid/forwards. Lonie and Kent are there as depth if desperately needed.

There's always the best case scenario, the most likely scenario, and the scenarios you'd prefer not to think about.

Our best case scenario in 2021 is a flag. That's the first time we can say that since 2011. 2012 if you're the really optimistic type and you thought we could rebound after losing Lyon.

Lots has to go right, but it's possible:

- One or two more youngsters "do a Steele" and make the leap from good player to AA level. Say, King and Clark.

- Good run with injuries in the spots that matter most and are most irreplaceable- I think that's talls- King, Howard, Ryder, Marshall.

- Hill or Crouch find their best, B&F winning form.

- With a bit more experience the team learns how to close out close games and play 4 quarters more consistently

- Tweaking of the game plan, a little more variation, more strings to our bow

If these things happen we should be right in the premiership mix
