Excited at how hard it is, because good players have to miss out but a lot of the team is straightforward.

Paton Carlisle Wilkie

Clark Howard Coffield

Hill Jones Hannebery

Gresham Marshall Billings

Butler King Membrey

R: Ryder, Steele, Crouch

I: Long, Battle, Sinclair, Geary/Ross

****If Higgins comes (maybe 30% likely), then Higgins half foward flank ,billings wing and Hanners bench

That a pretty balanced side, shaping up as a contender for sure but only time will tell.
Gonna say top 4 if the new midfield gels with rucks and,we can keep injury free.

We may need to look into poaching some physios with the amount of concerning hamstrings out there now :p

Improvements of coff, clark and paton will be the icing on our crouch pickup.
Biggest concern is what happens if carlisle is out to me, battle will get locked into defense which limits forward rotation potency.

Agreed, 4th is possible but likely 5-6th.
yeah they will improve further and surely crouch can get his KE% up to 55+, he uses it alright by hand. Obviously it's relevant where he gets the ball and who to and pressure etc...

But if he can improve with that the he could be a very good player.

Yeah if carlisle goes down hopefully it's against team with two big forwards, most have 2. Wilkie can take a 3rd usually but Battle can play key back if need be.

I think rather than looking at just the best 22, we need to look at how many players could come into our side next year due to injuries or form without causing us to hyperventilate in fear. Looking at our list, that number is significantly higher than it has been in years – even better than it was during 2009/10 years where our lack of quality depth probably cost us a flag.

I've put the depth in order of how comfortable I'd feel about them coming into the side. Aside from tall depth (somewhat alleviated by recruiting McKernan) we have legitimate backup options now.

FB: Paton Howard Wilkie
HB: Long Carlisle Coffield
C: Jones Hannebery Hill
HF: Gresham Membrey Billings
FF: Butler King Marshall
R: Ryder Steele Crouch
Int: Battle Clark Ross Sinclair

Defence depth: Geary, Savage, Roberton, Webster, Marsh, Clavarino, Joyce, McKenzie
Midfield depth: Dunstan, Bytel, Byrnes, Phillips, Connolly, Alabakis
Forward depth: Lonie, Kent, Hind, Parker, McKernan

FB: Paton - Carlisle* - Wilkie
HB: Long - Howard - Coffield
C: Hill - Steele - Clark
HF: Billings - King - Gresham
FF: Butler - Marshall - Membrey
R: Ryder - Jones - Crouch
I: Battle - Hannebery - Ross - Bytel/Sinclair

I don't think Ross is on the trade table.

Not sure on Higgins coming in. Tigers might dig in after Butler last year.

Carlisle = ???

Savage, Dunstan, Lonie and Webster could all go out so depth is hard to gauge.

Don't know where Geary fits in the best 22 to be honest, obviously brings important leadership but probably a depth option.
Still question marks on Carlisle, but I think he stays.
I probably expect Lonie to leave and if we get Higgins, he could end up taking Sinclair's spot.
Would love to see more of Bytel, but it's definitely going to be competitive for spots in the best 22.

The first 21 pick themselves, with only the last spot a debate for me right now.

I went with Sinclair because his skills and vision are very good and he is versatile enough to play both forward and through the middle. If Lonie stays at the club, I can see him getting the last spot as a 2nd permanent small forward. Or Higgins if we do get him will likely be competing with Sinclair for that position. Also can't rule out Geary.

Always love having a go at our best team for next year although I never seem to get close lol.

Is anyone else worried about Gresham?
I reckon he's just about our best player but will back and knee injuries have a long term effect on his career from here?

... Geary, Sinclair, Webster,

Seb must lift next year. As a guy not that flexible he must nail his spot.

I keep saying how impressed I have been this season with Coffield, Paton , Howard , Clark and Wilkie in the back line . But I keep forgetting that Long also had a great year and has found his best spot in the team . He is much more comfortable playing as a defender and his tackling was scary for his opponents .
The match review panel just has to get off his back for his strong bumps . This is a contact sport ffs.
I still can’t believe he got a week for a bump because it had the potential to hurt someone even though the player got straight back up and wasn’t injured . Then look at the Dangerfield accidental hit in the GF and he didn’t he get sited by the panel .
