Every 2 years, rotate it to different states.
WA vs All stars at Perth next time
SA vs All stars at Adelaide oval in 4 yrs
Nsw/ACT vs QLD in 6yrs (keep it competive)
Vic vs All stars in 8 yrs time

the only issue with this might be tv ratings in victoria. Will 390,000 tune in to watch the all stars? Who knows. But if not, then its probably not going to happen

Not sure how, as a born and bred Territorian that makes me entitled.

The 'Allies' helped to kill SOO. no surprise that 4years after they were introduced SOO ceased to exist (now I know there were many other factors at play here.

Also, a NSW or Qld or Tas or ACT or NT side would get thumped by the Vics and to a lesser extent SA/WA.

The Allies aren't the reason SoO no longer exists. If state games in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia were still pulling huge crowds and you had the buy in from the best players then you can bet your bottom dollar that State of Origin would have taken place in the 2000s. What we saw on Friday night was a huge crowd and absolute buy in from the game's best players which is exactly what was missing in the late 90s. That's why people are starting to consider the possibility that Origin has a future in the AFL.

The biggest change since the 90s from a state perspective is the increase in talented players coming out of New South Wales and Queensland. The northern academies will ensure this continues and the draft pool increases in the northern states. NSW in particular can put forward a very competitive state team which would give traditional powerhouse South Australia a serious run for their money:

New South Wales
B: Z.Williams (GWS), P.Davis (GWS), C.Mills (Syd)
HB: M.Suckling (WB), D.Howard (PA), D.Rampe (Syd)
C: I.Smith (Haw), I.Heeney (Syd), H.Cunningham (Syd)
HF: J.Bruce (WB), T.Hawkins (Gee), L.Breust (Haw)
F: H.Himmelberg (GWS), T.Walker (Ade), N.Blakey (Syd)
Fol: J.Witts (GC), J.Steele (StK), J.Hopper (GWS)
Int: J.Townsend (Ess), J.Finlayson (GWS), H.Perryman (GWS), A.Miles (GC)

South Australia aren't what they once were and are a distant third in terms of a state team so you would find an SA v NSW state game in 2021 to be a competitive fixture. Queensland on the other hand wouldn't be as competitive as NSW and would be more suited to facing a combined Tasmania/Northern Territory/Internationals team.

Can I just say "* off with that". And I'm sure Terriotorians feel the same way.

People from the NT or Tasmania might think that's pretty harsh on them but if you actually look at the team they can put together based on current AFL players, there's barely enough for a combined team so you can imagine how they would go on their own:

Allies (TAS/NT/INTERNATIONALS)
B: J.Howe (TAS), L.Jones (TAS), M.Weller (TAS)
HB: Z.Tuohy (IRE), S.May (NT), C.McKenna (IRE)
C: M.Robinson (TAS), N.Cockatoo (NT), Z.Bailey (NT),
HF: A.McDonald-Tipungwuti, J.Riewoldt (TAS), D.Rioli (NT)
F: W.Rioli (NT), B.Brown (TAS), S.Motlop (NT)
Fol: M.Cox (USA), H.Greenwood (TAS), L.Weller (TAS)
Int: T.Bellchambers (TAS), T.Thomas (TAS), B.Parfitt (NT), T.Nankervis (TAS)

There are less than 20 Northern Territorians in the AFL currently in case you don't know.

Yeah, the teams wouldn't be great but footy is bigger than the AFL and some of the state league players would be better than 18 and 19 year olds on AFL lists who have barely played a senior game in their life yet. NT would push Tas, and on a good day Tas might push Qld. With some sort of promotion/relegation they wouldn't be playing any of the big states unless they earn the chance.

I don’t know why some are wanting to see anything permanent in terms of a combined / Allies / “All Stars” team. It’s a s**t concept that draws near-universal disdain from those in the affected states and territories, and it’s not required anyway.

At most any state team will be playing one game a year and in Vic, SA, WA, Tas, NSWACT and QLDNT there’s enough teams to have three relatively even matches. Hell, even have four if the territories really want their own, though I can’t see that happening, particularly with the ACT.

Really wish SOO would just die off completely. Has no place in our game.
I guarantee you a Victoria v Western Australia state game at Optus Oval this time next year would be a sell out. It's not dead, it's just difficult logistically to find the right format that works for everyone.

I would need to be a proper round-robin competition to pique any sort of interest. Otherwise, it's just an exhibition game with nothing riding on it.

It works in the NRL because nobody gives a s**t about the regular competition.

I think it's worth repeating, but we need to temper our expectations. Those expecting an 80s style SoO with fanatical attack on the footy will be disappointed. I think it's still enjoyable to watch the skills and the spectacle of great players playing together. I also think they would turn up the heat in the last 20 minutes if the game's at all close, as pride and competitive spirit comes to the fore.

One thing it showed to me is how much players these days depend upon team structures. When left to free-wheel, they are pretty out of practice at it and a bit uncomfortable almost, compared to the good old days.

They should include all states and have 3 games each year (6 teams), with one state rotating out. Have a ranking system so opponents are rotated but reasonably fairly matched. Still better than regular pre-season games, and doesn't increase risk of injury compared to other practice matches. I don't generally watch pre-season games but would watch NSW vs SA, or NT vs Tassie.

I'm a Vic but would much rather watch NT vs Tas, or Tas vs Qld, since it has some meaning, than a combined team which means nothing. If we had genuine SoO every pre-season, I'd obviously watch VIC v WA but would also tune in for every other game, unless it was a shocking mismatch.

What a forward line.

Rank them now based on current AFL games played by state/territory, or some system that works, from 1-8. EG Vic, WA, SA, QLD, NT, TAS, NSW, ACT (not meaning to offend if this is well off the mark)

every 2nd year each state plays 1 match over the course of a weekend footy carnival.

year 1;
1vic v 2wa, 3sa v 4qld, 5nt v 6tas, 7nsw v 8act - loser drops a ranking, winner gains a ranking.

then in 2 years you'd have winner of 3v4 player loser 1v2, loser 3v4 plays winner of 5v6, etc... etc... etc... you then have rank and bragging rights for the next 2 years.

Just an idea, could be s**t.

State Of Origin is a real dumb idea!!! the Allies is not a state peoples!!!

whats next AFL International Tri Series Australia, Ireland and Nauru?

I'm guessing that was the state league rep team. Escort Cup included some clubs from footy states and rep teams from others.
I actually get that Queensland are in it as remember Tasmania and NSW did play VFL teams in night series of these times but more confused how VFA club are in it. I do not remember VFA clubs ever in the night series comp that ran from pre-season to about May. I suspect this is not the same night series I watched.

I thought it was with "Escort Cup" signs on the fence, but like with Tas clubs only a couple of VFA teams were in it.

edit: Still "NFL Championship Series" in 1978 and not including VFL sides. QAFL first played in a comp with VFL teams in 1980, but it seems there were no VFA teams in it by then.
