Simpkin the best in Kangas’ count

MARC McGOWAN
THE present and future at North Melbourne are intertwining, with tough midfielder Jy Simpkin claiming his maiden Syd Barker Medal as the club’s best and fairest winner.

Viewed as a likely future captain, Simpkin averaged career-best numbers almost across the board this season, including 27 disposals, five clearances and five inside 50s.

The 23-year-old rattled home to poll 143 votes and beat dual medallist Ben Cunnington (117), with captain Jack Ziebell finishing third on countback from fellow defender Aaron Hall (both 114).

Cunnington missed four of the last five games after being diagnosed with a testicular tumour that he underwent surgery to remove.

Simpkin finished runner-up last year to Luke McDonald, who he shares the Kangaroos’ vice-captaincy with.

He had a number of standout performances but none better than in round 9 against Hawthorn, where he amassed 38 disposals, 23 contested possessions, 14 clearances and nine tackles.

Simpkin’s latest two-year deal expires at the end of next season and he will be North’s top re-signing priority, along with Tarryn Thomas.

The Roos’ rebuild has focused on the midfield first, with that duo, Luke Davies- Uniacke, Will Phillips, Tom Powell and this year’s potential No.1 draft pick, Jason Horne- Francis, set to form a fearsome on-ball brigade.

Davies-Uniacke’s own rise was highlighted with a fifthplaced finish in the club champion count, while Thomas finished eighth as he increasingly moved into the midfield.

Cunnington won the fanvoted Excellence Award after another strong campaign that saw him poll a club-high 15 Brownlow Medal votes.

The 30-year-old ranked second in the AFL for contested possessions (15.6) and clearances (7.5) per game.

You could tell Jy was completely overwhelmed with the emotion of winning. It really meant so much to him.

When he stopped talking I actually consciously thought about him not thanking the fans and members, but wasn’t fussed cause I could tell he was in a bit of a daze. To have the presence of mind to jump back in to make that last thank you genuinely made me smile from ear to ear.

I think he might hold up our next cup.

Or the other way to look at it - 3 of the top 4 were oldies in a team that was a long way last - that needs to reversed next year or this rebuild is off track.
Shows our lack of quality in the prime 24-28 age bracket.

2 Stars at 1 & 2.
2 veterans who stayed on the park
5 kids in the 23 and under bracket.

We just need another 40-50 games into this lot.

Well done JY.

As far as age goes ... Ziebs and Hall had career best years under a new coach. Cunners is Cunners.

Then we had LDU rounding out the top 5. The next five were "young" players except Turner. This is good news for a developing side.

The 24-28 gap stands out with only Turner in the top ten but two of our top three players last year, Lmac and Jed, were injured for significant parts of the year. Both had a tough year. It'll be interesting to see how they go with a full pre season. Hopefully Jed finds his r2 form and LMac does the same with his 2020 form. Both seem to provide good onfield leadership for the young guys too. Froggy was in the same boat but he seems on the outer now. i guess we'll see what the future brings there.

Special mention for David King, he’s a decisive figure around this site but I recon this puts it to bed. Must be highly respected at the club to have been given the honour of co hosting the night and I rechecked did a cracking job, especially around the handling of the Cunnington interview.
on ya kingy!
