Henry and Blicavs as lockdown defenders for Taylor and Henderson. Esava and Stanley to share the ruck. Clark to a wing for Touhy. Krueger or DeKoning to play games.

Reckon Zac Guthrie should come in. I liked what I saw of him this year. Could be a late developer I reckon.

No need for Higgins unless Jack Steven leaves/retires. We can’t have both these guys on the list. Higgins would be better option but not sure North really want Steven.

Players I would like to see try out for other clubs:
Henry - reminds me in a way of Murdoch. Tenacity, tries hard. But just lacks awareness and he has too big a skill deficit. Mistakes cost grand finals.
Miers - tragic. If we aren't going to use him as a full time small forward, get rid of him. He deserves more than we are giving him atm.
Blicavs. I admire him. But he is what is wrong with Geelong. Tenacious unskilled player. Took the game on too late in life.

I would have liked to have seen Selwood bow out this year with Taylor and Ablett. Still very serviceable in the gf and almost in my votes. But he was an all time great! And you can get the same out of a developing player who can only improve.

Stewart to be made captain.

The administration and coaching staff can stay, but they need to do some navel gazing, and tell supporters what it is they are aiming for.

Thanks for creating the thread nice and early cats_09, great way to look forward and move on from last night.

This is how I'd like to see us line up Round 1 2021:

B: Stewart – Kolodjashnij – Henry

HB: Bews – De Koning – O’Connor

C: Menegola – C. Guthrie – Blicavs

HF: Dahlhaus – Ratugolea – Miers

FF: Krueger – Hawkins – Dangerfield

R: Stanley – Duncan – Parfitt

INT: Simpson – Clark – Close – Selwood

Other potential inclusions:
Narkle, Constable (if the stay at the club), Tuohy, Stephens, Fogarty, Rohan, Atkins, Evans, Z. Guthrie + 2020 draftees

I'm still not completely convinced Cameron will end up here next year given how much GWS want in return, but should he come he'd swap in for Ratugolea.

Other points of note:
  • De Koning and Krueger to debut. I think last night was the peak of our true Premiership chance, so I'd like to set up for a real crack in 2022-23 rather than top up to go again in 2021. SDK to move into a KPD role, and from what I've seen of Krueger I think he can play as the third forward (similar to the current Rohan role)
  • Selwood to rotate through a wing with occasional plays on the ball. I think we need to expose Simpson and Parfitt in the middle ahead of him now to build for the future

I hope Narkle or Cockatoo stays. I think we should go hard to keep Narkle.

Selwood is a hard one. Could he go to defence like Mathew Boyd did at the Western Bulldogs and be a General back there? Could he play as a forward flank?

Maybe best spot is limited minutes in midfield and come in and impact games in bursts.

But thats why as a small defender, I think if any it may worth a chance trying  .
Reason also is we can't keep playing him in there as at his age and younger players may go pass him
I expect Selwood will only play 15-16 games next year. He is too slow now. I think forward pocket could be a position as he is a decent kick. So kicking for goal and short kicks in and around 50 might suit. But his lack of pace is a worry. That would be exposed down back on quick forwards.

Scour the state leagues for a straight ahead back pocket defender. They are out there. A Jed Bews with many more tricks and nous.

Need midfield speed. Even Scott said tigers speed and runners are under estimated. Need speed to hunt and chase and harass and pressure. Midfield is getting old. Selwood gone from midfield, Guthrie, Duncan, Paddy menongola around that 30+ age. Need young speed in the middle. I think we need to offload some of these finals flops too. Kolo and Rohan have had their chance. We are mentally scarred. Need new , young hungry players. Higgins and Cameron won’t get it done. hunger and freshness and speed is what we need.

This may be too simplistic, and I'm aware that across the h&a season we were the highest scoring team, but I'd like to see our forward line coached by a former forward

I know that Brad Johnson has done work with the club over past preseasons, but can't remember the last time we had a full-time former forward on our coaching ranks

Just thinking that it would be really helpful especially for our younger guys like Ratugolea, Miers, Evans, Close, Jarvis etc to have a forward coach as a mentor to and help teach them the forward craft, and also change to the forward line dynamics

Bews and Kolo have to be replaced in the backline, they offer absolutely nothing offensively, are probably two of the worst kicks in the entire comp, and their defensive work is vastly overrated, especially when you consider we've already got O'Connor and Henry respectively who are already superior and are still showing signs of development. Any two players who can both provide run and clean disposal to take their spot. Clark a clear replacement for Bews, and what I'd give for a Mackie-type to replace Kolo...

No. He isn't fast enough to play wing/half-forward or good enough overhead to play in defence.
Literally just won the GF sprint against Brad Hill and Charlie Cameron

Wishlist:
  • Blicavs to drop back full-time into defence to cover Taylor's retirement
  • Ratugolea to replace Rohan as CHF/relief ruckman. Far too many games where Rohan has zero impact with ball in hand, we might as well get someone who can mark it instead. The club also needs to develop SavRat in game situations.
  • Jordan Clark to start R1 on a back flank. The club needs that dash and delivery. One of Kolo, Bews or Henry makes way.
I also think that we need to be prepared for the question of what happens if Selwood is found to go one year too long. He's not the player he used to be and there's a queue of players lining up for that inside midfield berth.

All of these and in the third point, it's Kolo who makes way.

His footy IQ is in the negative some days - which isn't the case for the other two

- Like most of us I've greatly admired Joel Selwood's career, but I wonder whether it might not be time to hand the captaincy reigns on; we need new voices taking ownership of the team.

Make Stewart or Guthrie captain. My preferences are in that order because I prefer defenders to captain (the buck always stops with defence and if the captain can see 'the whole field' ahead of him, mores the better.

Okay these are my current thoughts.
-Tbh honest thought Scott adopted the Hawks 12-15 style. I recall him saying in 2015, that it was really difficult to apply pressure on the Hawks.
Inject more pace all over the ground.
-Clark has to come in and be given an extended run. He can become our ‘ Short, Baker’ type.
- love H but defs time to move on. If Kolo does play has to be playing as a Key position, etc ( Riewoldt). If not no room in the side as lacks run & carry.
- Still scares me a little with Kolo & Henry in the backline. Only room for one? Kolo did the exact same mistake against Richmond in 2018 late in the game.
- Midfield? Not sure I mean as everyone knows carbon copy of the PF in 2019. Personnel? Structure? Can’t even remember if even won a centre clearance n the second half. Again Narkle could be that spark we need for next year. Hopefully he gets over those annoying niggles throughout next season.
- no to Higgins thanks. Close want to see more of him.
also put an emphasis on finishing off our work.Something Hawks have done better then Us overall. 2 leads that should’ve been been maxed out more.

I'd be comfortable with Stewart in the role - just hope that Selwood can see the writing on the wall and willingly hands over the reigns.

We are talking about Selwood

Yeah I worry about that too. And I worry about the club giving the captaincy to Dangerfield. He's a fine footballer, but no blue collar, on-field leader - which is what we need.

Clark is fast but his natural game is the quarterback defender with intercept marking a decision making with a good kick

Apologies if this is overly negative on Cameron, it's not meant to be. I posted the below elsewhere in regards to the cats chucking it ask in the get Jez:

With two KPFs in the wet we lose a substantial amount of forward half defensive pressure. Last night we lost the game in the middle while our forward mix was mostly right.

Where we and other sides have held ground on Richmond is having strong defensive efforts in f50 otherwise you get slaughtered on the rebound.

I think the MC would be looking at last night and thinking Cameron would have made us actively worse not better.

So what's the cats strategy going forward?

Well on paper they'd be copying west coast 2018 for 2021. Not only has this not beaten Richmond at the MCG but is the polar opposite of what the cats have done since Richmond became the dominant team.

To take advantage of this they need fast ball movement. They currently do not have a system that generates consistently fast ball movement.

It's also debatable whether this is the right strategy for a side that plays at KP. Where it's easier to sag off your man to spoil and so you need good ground level work.

Now bearing in mind that the cats have been chasing Cameron for years as a Hawkins replacement, unofficial offers etc will have been made long in advance of this year.

Those unofficial offers would have been made in a context where Hawkins was seen to be either trailing off the end of his career or outright retiring this year.

That brings us to second aspect here which is the looming ruck situation at the cats.

With Harry Taylor retiring, barring Sam DeKoning putting on 5kgs of muscle before rd 1 Blitz will shift to FB.

Suddenly Stanley has no back up from Blitz in the ruck anywhere outside d50. Hawkins can help a bit in f50 but not through the middle.

We would normally look to Sav as a ruck forward chopping out Stanley but if we are playing Jez + Hawk + Sav then we would have no f50 defensive pressure at all and we'd be really badly exposed on the rebound against sides like the Tigers.

So the MC have a problem here. How do they shoehorn 2 KPFs into a playing style designed for 1?

The cats did not plan for this problem.

So to stay in the window they probably need Hawkins to retire or not recruit Jez at all. Because without pressure forwards preventing rebounds they'll get slaughtered by Richmond

So where does that leave the cats?

Jez has asked to get out now so there's no going back.

The cats are in a situation where the value he adds is only really in a post Hawkins world.

That's looking like 2023 now not 2021 and so the timing means that in the first year he truly adds value as KPF half our midfield is retired and he turns 30.

They can't really retire Hawkins after the year he had, they can't trade in Jez and not play him, they can't lose Blitz ruck work and not play Sav.

So while the value of Jez in the general market is high, any trade for him has a high probability of closing the premiership window for 2021.

Scott might make it work but there have to be wholesale changes to the midfield and its a low probability

So what's a fair trade for Jez if your list of things given up includes your shot at the 2021 premiership?

On 2 KPF, WCE won a GF with it and Richmond have won 2.
