How the hell havnt geelong tapped taylor on the shoulder and told him his time is up. Geelong ships off fowards as soon as they are 32 but defenders at this club seem to get the freedom to choose whenever they want to leave. Taylor you are 34 ffs. Time to go. We need to put blicavs back into defence.

I don’t disagree with you... but if we didn’t know Harrys age would we think he warrants another year on form

Stanley and Sav can easily share that ruck and follower load.
Cameron and Hawk KF's.
Blic FB.
That's great but it's a complete reversal of the game style we've been building.

Remember when Hawk and Menzel were marking targets with Smith and Stanley rotating?

If it wasn't marked it was sailing straight back out again. Menzel was crucified as a culprit and delisted despite averaging 2 goals per game.

Now we did well at the time but our backline had a host of all Australians and premiership stars so they managed to deal with the entries.

How much of our current defensive prowess is from slowing down play up the field? How much is it just preventing turnovers and fast entry through slower low risk ball movement?

If we continue slow ball movement then we're just inviting congestion in f50 and we're not going to get much out of Cameron.

I'm excited by the prospect of Cameron but we need a revamp of the defensive system to maximise his output if we also have a traditional second ruck.

Smith was not persevered with. Just like this year with Sav. We look very threatening when he is firing. Still young, but I think if he had his act together, the likes of Rohan and Dahl would struggle to get game time despite their different roles.
Sav has tricks up forward, and has already shown superb marking skills. He just needs continuity and opportunities. I will be annoyed if he does this away from Catland.
Danger can and should play as a HFF. He could be awesome there. Not getting younger or quicker.
Miers should stay as a small crumbing forward.
Cameron does not ruck much anyway- not that sort of KF. I see him as a Riewoldt J type of forward.
Rohan needs therapy over the off-season. Goes missing way too often. Maybe mindfulness and whatever Tigers have gained from their mindfulness psychologist. If Rohan is indeed our barometer, we are in deep shit.
Dalhaus could be lucky to get games next year.

Yeah I don't think we have to worry about Rohans consistency as with Jez in he'd be consistently watching from the stands.

I just think if we move away from this whole of side defence system we will be moving to a new system where our defenders have to stand on their own. Maybe they're ready, maybe they're not.

1. A genuine small forward that can hit the scoreboard. Not enough to have smalls that just provide defensive pressure. That should be a given. Is Evans, Close or Tarca capable of filling that role?
The only players other than Hawkins proven to be able to score are Rohan and Miers. Dahlhaus disappoints me, Atkins is limited and those above have shown very little.
2. Another line breaking back. Clark has to play from round one. At the expense of a tall. Kolo is the one to make way for me.
Maybe, but as a wingman.
Not a defender's arseh*le.
3. Replace Taylor and Ablett. Like to see Blicavs return to a key defensive role. SDK to maybe get a small taste of form justifies. Ablett’s spot looks earmarked for Higgins but I’d prefer to use it on youth.
Higgins isn't in the same role as Ablett. He'll be another mid, likely to give us two smooth users alongside Duncan.
4. Selwood and Dangerfield. Need to prepare for their exits. Stephens needs to be blooded. Given half a dozen games. Fogarty hopefully also steps up too.
Does he? He has less form than Constable who doesn't warrant selection, and this applies to Cursed Cat remark about SDK too. I don't want guys blooded merely for the sake of it. Make them earn it.
6. Hit the draft with the 3 early picks if we can retain them. Trade up to get Bruhn. Use the other on Perkins. Two classy, quality kids.
Not getting the hype over trading up, unless we can snag no.1 for Ugle-Hagan (who should be ours anyway) then just take 3 picks where they are and trust our list manager.
7. Draft a young ruck.
Looks like maybe a youth basketballer as Cat B.
Something to add to this thread would be the President position too with Carter leaving after this season.
Is Gartland the obvious choice or do we look elsewhere? If so who? Would there be a short list or do we have a heir apparent?

I really like the idea of Rohan somewhere down back whoever proposed that. I like the idea of him streaming out of the back and kicking long.

Good God no - you can’t be serious. It looks like this plodding average silvertail has been lined up for President but if that happens, we are going backwards quickly. Colin Carter had a sustained record of real success, as did Frank Costa. This clown screwed Cricket Australia royally ( they are still damaged even now culturally) due to his leadership. He got a high TV deal because there were competing bids. So what. Every other aspect of CA has been a disgrace - cheating, corporate incompetenc.old boys club etc. Why would a strong proud regional club who has fought for 20 years to build good governance and an aligned culture then make the classic boys club mistake of appointing someone with such a poor record. My God look at the hub situation with his son where the club was forced to argue that he and his son got golden tickets because he could ‘advise on living away from home for sports teams’. NO-ONE believed that rubbish and I certainly felt insulted by them arguing that - made me feel the club was taking its members as idiots. As soon as this guy is involved, we will be treated like idiots.

Im no great wrap for him, he adds a mature body but also is a bit of list clogger
2 years left on his contract ..poor recruitment if thats the case.

Sav is close to our best overhead mark on our list ..but after that close to our worst kick , and is limited with in-game smarts Some have said he might make a CHB , worth a try but its not a spot on the ground to just hide guys these days.

FB: Stewart Blitz Bews
HB: Henry Henderson O'connor
C: Duncan Higgins Smith
HF: Danger Hawkins 2e
FF: Miers Cameron Close
Foll: Stanley Parfitt Guthrie

Bench: Kolo Simpson Selwood Menegola

Then it is up to: Clark, Rohan, Fogarty, Zuthrie, Sav, Dahlhaus to force their way in (Assuming we get Higgins & Smith and they are good to go)

But when you put it like this its not hard to see why some of them are being brought up as trade bait.

I was firmly in the keep Kolo camp until I wrote this post. But now I am starting to see the merit.

Edit (I forgot Dahlhaus)

It's almost like you shouldn't fill the side with mature aged players with known weaknesses to begin with. You aren't going to get many years out of them even if everything goes right, and there are a lot of things that can go wrong.

4 years was always a stretch..its probably what was needed to get the FA deal done. Fine for some players but at his age.. Id rather someone who was more than a pressure small forwards who doesn't kick a lot of goals. I think when they got him they were aware that our forwardline was too young.. now we have one spot locked

Richmond also have a lot of Indigenous talent.
Not to make it a race debate or anything of the sort but the Indigenous athletes make brilliant footballers (given they are the original creators of the game). They are built for speed and Richmond had four of them stretching our defense last night.
It's been a key factor to their success.
Another reason why West Coast will forever remain a strong and successful club.
Thought this myself. Indigenous players make such a huge difference. Most of Those that play the game at the highest level have some intangible spark or capability that cannot be coached or taught.

Imagine having Liam Ryan in that GF? As an aside, I now completely understand how WCE picked him over Kelly in 2017.

I am coming around to the idea of Rohan as a defender too. I think his lack of influence is normally due to his not being near the play. The accountability of defence could suit him well. But I may just be being seduced by the idea of him streaming of defence chucking it on his boot long to a 1on1 with Hawkins, Cameron or Sav on the end of it.

am I the only one who prefers Kolo to Henry?

For quite a while took Geelong clearly tried to draft at least one Indigenous player each year:
2017 Tim Kelly
2016 Brandan Parfitt, Quinton Narkle and Jamaine Jones (rookie)
2014 Nakia Cockatoo
2013 Zac Bates (rookie)
2012 Brad Hartman
2011 Joel Hamling
2009 Allen Christensen
2008 Steven Motlop, Adam Varcoe (rookie)
2006 Nathan Djerrkura
2005 Travis Varcoe, Matthew Stokes

It seemed to stop in 2019 and 2018, although you could also say that in those years we didn’t have picks for the good Indigenous players that were available (like Rankine, say).

Over the last tnen years we’ve had a lot of fringe players go to other clubs and not make an impact. But the first-team players who have gone on to play consistently at other clubs have disproportionately been Indigenous: Varcoe, Christesen, Kelly, and likely Cockatoo. An untried player (Hamling) chose a list spot at the Bulldogs over a rookie spot with us. Probably the reasons for leaving were different in each case, but if Cockatoo and Narkle both go (again, for different reasons) then Parfitt will be the only Indigenous player left, and it starts to look a bit like a pattern.

I hope there are a couple of Indigenous players around for this and next year’s draft that we are considering.
