10. Cunners

Along with Goldy our most important player. We are surrounding him with young, ball winning mids but he will still be the main man. Reckon he goes forward more as we give more midfield minutes to the younger mids. He is good overhead for his size & showed against the saints that he can go forward & snag a sausage or two. This has the added benefit of prolonging his career as he will not have to cope with the crash & bash in the stoppages as much. The key is that he is over the back injury & back to his best.

11. Luke McDonald

Finally delivered on the promise with a B&F. Played as a lockdown & ball winning, intercepting defender & as a tagger in the middle. His flexibility both in general & as a defender fits in well with the Nobes mantra. With all the new mids I think he plays back next year where his organising ability will be important. Needs to back up this year’s form & take a leadership role.

12. Jy Simpkin

You want young players to get better each year & Jy has done that. Excellent as a mid early in 2020. Can play inside & out & racks up possies. Was a victim of the compressed season as the bigger, more experienced bodies in the bash & crash of the inside mid role wore him down. In the leadership group. With Cunners return will be freed up a bit. Likely to rotate through HF where we know his skill. Great evasive skills.

13. Jared Polec

Only uses his right leg for standing on but his left leg is elite. It is good that Nobes is acknowledging his defensive deficiencies but also praising his run & carry. Is probably now playing for his career as there were no takers in the trade period & we have a plethora of up and coming mido. However the new game plan would seem to suit him & he brings to the table elite kicking skills that others don’t have. Best 22 at this stage but needs a good start to the season to keep the challengers at bay.

Does so much that the coaches see that we the mug punters don’t hence the high finishes in the B&F. The defensive wingman is so important in the modern game & he has been rated by Champion Data as elite in this role so must be doing something right. Forced into an inside mid role in 2020 & performed well which adds to his versatility. A strong two way runner with good skills. Best 22 & we do not have any others that have demonstrated they can play this role.

15. Atu Bosenavulagi

We have been after a small, pressure forward for some time & apparently have been interested in Atu for some time so there is a real opportunity there for him. He is not the steak knives in the Stephenson deal. Played three games last year for the Pies & showcased a strong attack on the ball & the man with it. Fitting him into a forward line that has a lot of talented medium forwards available will be a challenge.

16. Aiden Bonar

He played as a forward for GWS. When we recruited him we said he would play as a mid & yet he did not really play there. His best game was a defender so his best position is still to be determined. His testing results and size indicate he has the athletic qualities to be an inside mid. However we have recruited a host of inside mids, albeit with smaller bodies, who we will want to get games into. He needs a big year & identifying his best position & playing him in it, will be a good start.

17. Lachlan Young

Seems to fit in with the run & carry mantra well. The issue at the Dogs was not speed or ball use but rather his ability to read the ball well enough to get enough of it. Can play wing or HB but is likely to start in defence. In the right age bracket for our side & the fact that the Dogs didn’t want to let him go augers well after their development of him. In the logjam with Perez et al for an intercepting defender role.

18. Shaun Atley

Has he played 214 games or one game 214 times? Hasn’t had the much anticipated break out year despite being tried in different positions & it is probably now too late for it to occur. Perhaps the new game plan with its emphasis on speed & run & carry will suit him as he will not be the only designated speed man. It will be interesting to see where he plays as the emphasis is likely to be on developing the kids. Will start in the best 22 but will need early good form to keep the young uns at bay.

19. Josh Walker

Can play forward or back but at both the Lions and us does his best work in defence. However a defence with him, Corr, MCKay & Robbie is too top heavy & he is the one most likely to miss out. A forward role & as a chop-out for Goldy is the most likely spot for him. Will provide much needed aerial support for Larkey in this role. Attacks the ball in the air wholeheartedly but his ground work is not strong.

20. Nick Larkey

Will be our number 1 key forward which is a big ask of a 29 game player. Is likely to be double teamed although the commitment to a game plan that features quick ball movement will help him. Will need aerial support from some bigger bodies especially as the season goes on. Was given plenty of time to develop in the VFL & as the second banana to Browny. A good set shot from within 40m & good below his knees.

We should get into the ear of Sunderland the cricketer who was decent in his u18 year.
Hadn’t done much for vics or big bash and might want a change.
Great cat B prospect

Hasn’t done much?

He has a bowling average under 20 in FC cricket and is in the Australia A setup at 21.

He’s a legitimate future test prospect.

21. Dom Tyson

I just don’t see him getting a game given Cunners return & the need to get games into our new inside mids. He can play inside & outside but inside is his go. Needs to get his body right as a priority but I only see him being used later in the season if our young bodied mids need a break. Depth at this stage.

Burns is in the test side - so that’s not saying much about the shield players

Don’t think he’s got it - bowls pies

Burns is in there because we are missing our two preferred openers atm.

Sutherland is behind one of our strongest ever bowling attacks.

Weird comparison.

You’ve been watching too much big bash.

Sutherland would be in the top 6-7 u/21 quicks in the world.

If he can consistently get the ball to hold its line just outside the off-stump and keep being able to produce that booming inswinger at will I can see him playing quite a bit of test cricket.

22. Goldy

Along with Cunners our most important player but he presents a problem. As he does his best work when he plays as a lone ruck how do we get game time into his potential replacements (Xerri). Returned to his best form early last year but was worn down by the compressed schedule of games. The challenge now is to develop affinity with our new mids & the other players that will rotate through the midfield/stoppages.

Keen to see what giants do with Hogan, Finlayson, Himmelberg and Riccardi

Seems like one of Riccardi or Finlayson will be squeezed out and would be worth keeping an eye on throughout the year
Would you mind following that one for us? Please provide 57 updates per week. Thanks

Hogan will be playing centre half rehab so I wouldn't worry too much about him.
hands and knees boundary riding specialist..

23. Ben McKay

One of the few good things to come out of 2020. Took the step we have all been waiting for & nailed dow a key defence spot. Took on the best big forwards & become more than just a lockdown defender. This allows us the option of prolonging Robbie’s career by playing him in a more intercepting, less physically demanding role. Must now build on that. Best 22.
