24. Tom Powell

Drafted as a big ball winner, who can play inside & out. Likely to be physically ready to play round 1. As one of our plethora of inside mids will be given lots of opportunities to learn at the highest level. We will get games into him in 2021. The challenge for him is to establish the point of difference from our other inside mids. A real chance to play round 1.

Hogan will be playing centre half rehab so I wouldn't worry too much about him.
Maybe but equally wouldn’t surprise me to see the change of environment and the fact that it’s his clear last chance forces him to sort his s**t out

Which as mentioned could actually mean one of their other key forwards gets pushed out

You really think powell will be a likely starter for rd1?
I know he dominated under 18s but seems a little small for AFL; compared to the likes of phillips or even lazzaro/Atu etc.
Just not sure where he'd even fit or who he kicks out.

The draft “experts” identify him as one of the draftees most physically ready to play straight Away. He is not in my starting 22 but would be an emergency. Either way we will be keen to get games into him, Phillips & Lazaro pretty quickly.

You couldn't rule him out. I'm 50 this year and we're coming off the most disgraceful season I've seen in my lifetime. There are spots available if you're good enough.

25. Robbie Tarrant

Tis one of life’s great mysteries how this bloke hasn’t been an AA. A great one on one defender and backline organiser. He may have an expanded role in 21 as MCKay plays on the gorillas. This may allow him to use his intercept marking & rebound skills more. A Forward line role is possible given our dearth of key forwards but unlikely unless Larkey has a long term injury.

Similar bodies I guess but powell looks a lot smaller on field at training; Boy vs Man bodies etc.
I guess its to do with their play style?

I don't think so. Obviously genetics play a big part but Powell had a substantial hip op in Oct 18, rehab, then a year of footy (ie a lot of cardio) when Phillips had a year in the gym and on the aths track. A lot of the Vic kids this year look big for draftees where the kids from other states look more typical of past years. Having said that, Phillips probably had a fair head start. He was pretty well developed in his underage year.

26. Tarryn Thomas

Probably the most skillled player on our list. Terrific overhead, quick and quick thinking & a good footy IQ. The challenge is to convert the potential into performance on a consistent basis. Recmon he will get more midfield minutes in 21 cos he doesn’t need many possies to cause damage. The new, quick ball movement game plan should suit him as it will allow him to have more one on one contests. The expectations are huge but he has the talent.

27. Will Walker

Has played only 6 games but was singled out for praise in post match interviews by both Brad & Rhys & yet was the last player re-signed. It is all about the body & getting a clear run. What he has shown so far is a good footy IQ, hard running & versatility which means he should well into the new game plan. We have a lot of HFs who will be given the opportunity to get midfield minutes & he starts the year behind them but if he can get the body right & get some continuity his hard running might be a point of difference. A wing role might be an option.

28 Kayne Turner

The modern small forward tends to be either a goal kicker and/or a pressure, tackling machine. Kayne is not the former so relies on his tackling & harassing for a spot in the side. He has not had a breakout year & at 25 it needs to come soon particularly as our recruiters have identified the need for a small forward & as a result, have brought in Spicer & Atu. He is a great tackler & attacks the ball & the man with it with gusto but might need to get into the midfield rotation to improve his versatility. A challenging year awaits.

29. Will Phillips

Our priority was to strengthen our midfield & Will was rated as the best midfielder in the draft so his selection was a no-brainer. Physically he looks ready to debut in Round 1. He is an inside mid & has the opportunity to learn from a clearance specialist in Cunners. He oozes leadership potential & can now work with LDU, Jy et al to form our midfield combination for the next 10 years.

Happy to have Phillips, but because we didn't take Logan McDonald we are putting everything on Comden.

Not really.

I'm hopeful Comben makes it but we have other options too.

Maybe putting some faith in him for 2021 but clue can always take someone mid year or 2021 draft onwards.
If we're really struggling in the forward line I'd be ok with North taking the best 19yr old key tall forward target from the new east coast league.
Worth it if they're playing against men and AFL level players.

It seems to me that they're looking at retaining the ball with run and short possessions chains going by the shape of the list.

I'd expect a back line that holds it's shape all the time.

My untrained eye says we're going small in the forward line. I've heard commentary regarding 2 rucks and what Brisbane has done. I'm also looking at Richmond as a template. We got rid of Brown for Stephenson. At least Jaiden has pace and can go through the middle. They can both mark on a lead.

North didn't get rid of brown for Stephenson.
Brown decided he didn't want to get paid A LOT of money and then was called out on it and basically told to find a new home.
Stephenson became available somewhat late into the trade period (a week or 2 before it opened is pretty late imo) and we just used the compensation for brown in the trade.
Noble has said in interviews when he got the job that we were exploring the idea of playing 2 rucks etc now that brown has left the club.
I expect we'll do something similar to Brisbane as Noble probably helped orchestrate the same idea there to good success.
Norths mid sized forwards (sub 190cm) are more than capable to provide Larkey with support if needed.

Thanks for clearing that up. I put stuff out there to be corrected that's how I learn. Yeah, the sub 190cm is what I meant by small forwards
I would consider small forwards 179cm and under, mid sized forwards 180-192cm and talls 193cm+.
There's usually generic attributes that come with each height of player.
