I mean, I know it’s hard for some people, but can we not do the “we need to trade into the first round” thing in here.

😞

It's also not the thread to discuss current Hawthorn players and if they are in form or not, and whether they’re tradeable.

Trade targets. Trade targets. Trade targets.

That means players at other clubs, and our interest in them going forward.

these figures must be complete rubbish.

Gawn 800
Oliver 800
Petracca 1mill
May 700
Lever 700
MacDonald 600
Viney 650
Ben Brown 650

That’s almost 6 mill or 60% of the salary cap between 8 blokes?

Possibly the likes of Jones Melksham Hibberd Brayshaw Tomlinson and Langdon are all playing for 200k each per year?

Something does not add up.
Always a guessing game with contracts but they're averages for the length of their contracts they can be split front/ back loaded, none of those amounts are really over.

The salary cap is just over $13m.

So North would cough up the $8m?

North would for sure.

I don’t get the 6-8 year deals.

Petracca and Melbourne are in love right now. Players and clubs fall out of love and you are stuck paying a bloke in 5 years time a 1 million a season when he might be going through the motions or worse plagued with injury.

Crazy risky deals the long term thumpers.

I get the MFC being desperate and GWS being desperate, but I don't get the Pies doing it with Grundy.

One of the small advantages the Hawks have is we don't need to reach.

yep - you really have to win two flags to justify a million+ a season contract for seven+ years or one if you are Saints, Dogs, Demons so Richmond are the rare club that got away with it

1 flag is enough to justfy it, as we know flags aren't easy to win in an 18 team competetion.

As ive said for a while now, soon we'll find out if it was Wright who was the tight wallet, or it really is Clarko.
Seriously. What AFL club gives the coach full reins on player contracts ?

It’d be a club policy that would be ratified by the list management team & club board.

It’s all good to have plenty of money to spend to capture the player mangers attention, but if you’re not showing a great deal out on the field the players themselves aren’t necessarily going to be that keen.

We will be linked with every single potential free agent for the next 2-3 years and every single player manager will be using us as leverage in discussions to drive player X price up.

everyone said “what a coup the Buddy deal was and by the end of his contract it will be considered cheap as chips”

1.6 or whatever Ralphy reported the other night he is on this year is a lot of chips at the back end of a long term contract when the player can’t string more than 5 games together.

swans can talk about merchandise sales or whatever they want. At the end of the day they recruited him on massive coin to win a premiership and it has not worked.

Take out Franklin and add Mumford and the the extra Mill a year or so salary cap to recruit other players and the Swans would have been a big chance to win a couple more flags - the AFL would not have taken COLA off them either

Take out Tippett also and the 800k he cost them and spend it more wisely and they probably win a premiership or 2, the problem wasn't the Franklin deal it was the Tippett one, Franklin was the best forward in the comp in 4 of his first 5 seasons in Sydney.

Agreed.

Look to see us mentioned in the same breath as Kelly and Merrett, only for them to sign new 5 year contracts. 😂

Only really benefits us if we intend to use it this time, rather than topping up the contracts of players we already have on our books!

From the people I've talked to over the years, it is surprising how some players who play a lot of AFL footy aren't on that 400ish cash you'd assume.

Tomlinson is on good money say 550k. Half of Brown's contract being paid by North. Brayshaw, Langdon on good money as well
