OK, this was very tough!!
Tried to make it realistic as possible with what teams are actually trying to do (Coll and WB getting points this year, STK wanting picks this year, GC happy to move out of this years draft a bit), but also had to add some players that might not move, like Hunt.

It happens, Collingwood wouldn't have thought they were giving up Pick 2 when they made the trade with us last year, things go wrong in footy. A Geelong/ West Coast may fancy themselves a chance to come out winners of a trade like that
How?

Even if they win the flag which is pretty unlikely. It would be pick 18 + 2nd rounder/3rd rounder for 15. Even then its a loss.

I don't think the club trading in will see it as 'Pick 15 for 18 + change'. We saw it last year with Geelong trading in for Holmes, if there's a player the clubs really like around that range they'll do the deal regardless of points, especially if they dont an academy/ father-son of their own to worry about. Then it becomes more valuable the closer to the pick and they could potentially ontrade it for more

Thats vastly different your comparing apples to oranges in situations

Teams do give up a bit for specific players on the draft table but we are discussing a trade prior to the Darcy bid which by most indications comes in around 3

Teams wont know who is and isnt available at 15

Edit: Say if the cats even do F1 + pick 35 for pick 15 then that pick 35 (36) doesnt help the dogs much and they leave themselves in a really vulnerable position

Is there anything stopping the Dogs trading out 15 this year for say the Tigers 1st next year, then trading the Tigers 1st out again to another team after a bid on Darcy to get another 1st rnd pick this year. Bit of a convoluted question, sorry.
FWIW I doubt the Tigers would do it, just an example

The issue with this is;

The dogs first round pick this year will be 15 (Assume the under dogs both lose this week) after the daicos bid.

Whos trading a future first + a 2nd/3rd rounder for pick 15? No one.
The only way I could possibly see it working is if Brisbane wanted another dip in this years first round due to having Ashcroft likely absorbing their 2022 first.
Something like Brisbane 2022 first + the two 2021 thirds for Dogs 2021 first and 2022 second or third.

Dogs would then be a long way short of the required points for Darcy and Brisbane already have two late first rounders so not sure they would want a third?

Isnt that what the eagles and swans did years ago and they brought in a rule for it?

I dont believe you can re trade that pick until the following year

Although i suppose they could then trade their own F1 back into this years with someone

They can't trade it back to the same team, but otherwise entirely legal.

Yes, that's what happened, you can't deal with the same team. But I thought that if the deal was with a 3rd team then that's ok. I could be wrong.

Melbourne did that ambitious future trade in 2019 after finishing 17th, gambling on rising up the ladder the following year. I could see a club like Carlton pull the trigger if they need to use their current first for the Cerra trade. They clearly rate their own list based on some of the aggressive trade moves they've made, and expectations of making finals each year, so trading their 2022 1st could mean they get Cerra while staying in the 1st round.

It sort of fits with what they're doing then I suppose, Lipinski and Wallis (although he's not much value) possibly someone else to build a bit of draft capital for the early Darcy bid as well as getting back into the 1st round around that pick 14-15

You think Carlton will trade their F1 + 2nd/3rd this year for pick 15 (Dogs)?

As it stands, the teams that would be comfortable trading a future 1st WITH more capital this year for pick 14 are probably limited to GWS, Sydney, Melbourne and Geelong. Assuming all believe they will finish top 4.

GWS arent going to do that swap with Fahey
Sydney would be taking a gamble and already have a pick in the same range
Geelong would almost 100% prefer to just trade 2 of the 3 2nds they already have
Melbourne may be the most likely if they really really like that group from 10-20

Are the Dogs even better off doing the trade, or just bring in 1.4k points through a couple of 2nds which almost cover them if he's bid on at 3. With the picks to list spots rule back in, the Dogs cant just bring in 5 3rd round picks through trading spuds, you need some higher picks to match the points

You think Carlton will trade their F1 + 2nd/3rd this year for pick 15 (Dogs)?
A trade as simple as Pick 15 <> 2022 1st + 2021 2nd/3rd almost certainly wouldn't happen, no. Nowhere near that one sided. But I do think a side in Carlton's position would consider trading their future 1st, plus say Pick 25, in return for the Dogs pick 15 (or whatever it ends up being) plus our future 2nd, or something along those lines. On paper, it appears to be in the Dogs favour, but then so was the North Melbourne vs Melbourne trade in 2019.

Wasn't it confirmed that you can again bring unlimited picks this year? That's the impression I got, which would mean that we can get creative with our 1st and not worry so much about accruing decent picks

I'm just quoting others who have said its removed so dont have anything official, happy to be corrected.

No future picks or free agency compo nonsense, but something for everyone to complain about.

Hypothetical trade leader so far, kudos

Fair enough. I see no reason they'd allow unlimited picks again unless clubs were led to believe in 2020 that it was sticking around another year. If not, we are surely going to need to stockpile picks in the 20s which doesn't sound possible without using our 1st

The issue with this is;

The dogs first round pick this year will be 15 (Assume the under dogs both lose this week) after the daicos bid.

Whos trading a future first + a 2nd/3rd rounder for pick 15? No one.
Brisbane would definitely do this, as we have a highly rated father son kid next year.

We have 2 third round picks and 2 fourth round picks this year which we’re unlikely to use.

Personally, I’d happily trade first round picks with Bulldogs, and trade them al four later round picks for a future third and fourth round picks.

As long as Daicos is bid on first, that improves some or all of the Bulldogs picks as well, as the Collingwood picks are removed from the draft order.

As a freo supporter this would be extremely demoralising. Would basically just be regressing the rebuild by a couple years.
