Melbourne winning the flag shows that it’s just an exercise in mining the draft and just turning your list over until you’ve got enough first round picks and some great bit players around the edges.

look at the most recent premiership sides and those that are competing now

richmonds core players are all high end draft picks - Martin (3) Cotchin (2) Prestia (9) Riewoldt (13) Rioli (15) lynch (11) caddy (7)

dogs - bont (4) mcrae (5) smith (7) treloar (prelisted) naughton (9) schache (2) weightmann (15) English (19) plus a few good father sons

dees - petracca (2) brayshaw (3) lever (14) Salem (9) may (prelisted) Oliver (4) Pickett (12) viney f/s Jackson (3)

we just need to keep stockpiling and adding to our midfield depth with the best picks we can then add the extra pieces when they come our way. Hit the draft for 2 more years, keep turning it over cleaning out those that don’t make it and build that core

Yep. No-one enjoys or actively barracks for the spoon, but you can't access the best talent from the middle of the ladder.

Can't shelve all your leaders either or you end up like the pre-Roos Melbourne.

Looking forward to hopefully less injuries and seeing the young boys nurture with a full season of support next year.

you don’t just get it done with pick 1 and 20 though, need to get creative and jag another pick in the 7-15 range

not height per say, but being that bigger 90kg + mid. It’s whole different point of difference when you have a one or two of those around.

That’s why I’m asking if we have anyone that has the potential to get to those petracca, wines numbers. Seeing Oliver move from a congestion with two bulldogs hanging off him and getting boot to ball with crazy

Fair enough. Overall size is important as force equals mass times speed.

We were one of the best teams out of the Center for parts of the year. In 4 years we will be awesome

Hawthorn were exactly the same.

Can we please stop talking about guys who aren’t best 22 at their club. There’s litreally not one guy playing tonight who came from a club where he wasn’t getting a game

I'd argue Mitch Hannan wasn't in the Dees best 22 (especially once Fritsch came along). You could also make a case with Schache... But that's probably part of the reason why the Bullfrogs lost.

I agree with your point.

By my count, the Dees only had 5 players from other clubs... But 3 of them were their entire full-back line, so they clearly targeted their deficiencies and the rest is history.

How’d Hannah go tonight?

Ordinary... While the guy that took his spot kicked 6.2.

Totally away from the original point, it's why I'm a little worried that we've stockpiled too many medium forwards. We simply cannot add any more moving forward.

I worry that it's a Scott Clayton fetish.

Lever cost them 2 1st rounders and may another top 10. Whilst I agree with the notion there is no substitute for top end picks, melbourne did make some bold plays in the last few years using their draft capital and it paid off. A proper list build combines good drafting with all of the other levers they can pull
