Well it's probably about time for this, I guess...

Remember, this thread is for news articles/possibly tweets if half-reputable and discussion posts will be deleted - feel free to chat about the articles in the trade thread. Note that just because I post a story here doesn't mean I don't think it's probably rubbish (Denham, Ralphy, Waldron etc.) but it's worthwhile having a place to keep these stories together.

Edit: Also I won't be posting stories that break down to "Ex-AFL media personality thinks the Lions should pick up so-and-so" if there's no evidence that we're actually interested in that player.

Lachie Neale contemplating shock trade request back to WA (Daniel Cherny, The Age, 05/09)

Lachie Neale is contemplating requesting a trade back to Western Australia, with Fremantle his most likely destination should he return to the state.

Sources close to the situation confirmed that Neale’s heavily pregnant wife Jules was keen to return to Perth, having left the city three years ago when he was sensationally traded from the Dockers to the Brisbane Lions. In order to support Jules, Neale is also interested in a possible move back.

Neale has two years left to run on his contract with the Lions, with whom he won a Brownlow Medal last year and has made the finals three straight years.

The Dockers are likely to gain an early draft pick for Adam Cerra, which could help enable a deal.

But given his contract, any move would be contingent on Brisbane agreeing on a move for the star midfielder.

Neale, 28, was plagued with injuries this year but still managed to play some excellent football including a finals-record 46-disposal game against Melbourne last week.

Originally from South Australia, Neale spent seven years at the Dockers before his shock trade request to the Lions, who had courted him for months in the year before he was due to become a free agent.

Cerra, a top-five draft pick in 2017, late last month requested a trade back to Victoria, with Carlton in the box seat for his services.

West Coast have previously indicated they would not seek to bring in a big-name trade or free agent target in the off-season, instead focusing on heading to the draft after several seasons of topping up, most notably with Tim Kelly.

Lions GM Comments on Stunning Neale Trade Report (Nic Negrepontis, SEN, 06/09)

Daly said the club would release a statement on Monday afternoon, but added that they were not aware of Neale’s desire to head back to Perth.

“I can’t make any comments because I haven’t spoken to Lachie. I think the club will come out and make a statement sometime this afternoon once we’ve had a chance to speak to Lachie and work through it,” Daly told Radio TAB in Brisbane

“It’s all news to us. As far as we’re concerned, he’s got two years of his contract left and that’s where it is at.”

Club Statement: Lachie Neale

The Brisbane Lions have today met with midfielder Lachie Neale.

Lions CEO Greg Swann, GM of Football Danny Daly and Senior Coach Chris Fagan sat down with the Brownlow medallist following reports he was seeking to return to Western Australia.

Neale and his wife Jules are expecting their first child and he has confirmed the couple are weighing up where they would like to raise their family.

He did not request a trade but has asked for some time to have further discussions with his wife and family.

The Lions will not make any further comment at this stage and we request that Lachie and Jules’ privacy be respected.

AFL trade news: Brisbane star Lachie Neale could request trade back to Fremantle Dockers (Ron Ralph, Herald Sun, 06/09)

Brisbane would not hold Brownlow Medal star Lachie Neale against his will if he made an official trade request that he wanted to head home to West Australia.

The Lions met with Neale at the Gabba on Monday in a meeting where he pointedly did not yet request that trade despite confirming he was weighing up a move back home.

That request would seem inevitable given his wife Jules is keen to return to Perth to be closer to her family as she awaits the arrival of the couple’s first daughter.

But Neale made clear he was genuinely torn by the family’s circumstances and even at one point suggested he would not be asking for a trade.

The Lions made clear from the start of the meeting they understood the tough position he was in, but he told them he needed more time to consider his future.

It means the Lions are genuinely in the dark about his intentions but fearing the trade request will surely come after he spends time with his family coming up with a concrete position.

While rival clubs have at times refused to trade their star players, Brisbane has built a culture with senior coach Chris Fagan of strong relationships with players.

It means Fagan would accept Neale’s request if it came and only knock back a deal if the Dockers were unable to come up with adequate compensation.

The club said in a statement: “Neale and his wife Jules are expecting their first child and he has confirmed the couple are weighing up where they would like to raise their family.

“He did not request a trade but has asked for some time to have further discussions with his wife and family.”

Brisbane is understanding of Neale’s position despite moving to Brisbane only three years ago on a five-year deal because many Lions players and staff are in similar positions.

Fagan has grandchildren he has only seen twice in 12 months given the restrictions of Covid.

The Neales are aware that having a baby in Brisbane with family in Perth, which is adamant it will close its borders long after the nation hits 80 per cent vaccination, will mean they have no help with their daughter for the foreseeable future.

While they might have foreseen having a family in Brisbane, the world has changed in ways they could never have predicted given harsh travel restrictions that could continue into next year.

Brisbane is not yet at the point of considering replacements for Neale given there is still some small hope he might remain.

But with Neale’s manager Tim Lawrence contacting the club post-meeting to thank them for the way the meeting was conducted, the Lions have not burnt bridges should he decide to stay.

Fremantle must now come up with a trade that would get a deal done if Neale makes a request while also attempting to get maximum compensation for the departing Adam Cerra.

Fremantle CEO and Brisbane Board Member Comment on Lachie Neale Trade Scenario (Laurence Rosen, SEN, 07/09)

Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick says the club would look at a possible deal to bring Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale back to the club “really objectively”.

It emerged on Channel 7 on Sunday night that Neale was considering a return to Perth, with pregnant wife Jules hoping to raise their first child back in Western Australia.

Garlick said the club would always do what’s best for the overall make-up of the list, intent to take the emotional element of Neale’s possible homecoming out of any decision.

“Our job is to look at it really objectively and make sure we’re making the best decision for Fremantle on behalf of our members,” he said on Channel 9.

“While there is that connection, we have to separate ourselves from that to make the right call.”

NO LATE CHANGE FOR LACHIE
Lachie Neale is already working on his strength and conditioning program for next year at Brisbane and will not make a late trade request to get back home to Perth.
There has been speculation this week that Neale might again ask for a trade home despite considering that move then telling the Lions he was happy to fulfil the last two years of his contract.
His manager Tim Lawrence told the Herald Sun on Friday: “He will not be leaving Brisbane. That is dead and buried. He will not be going anywhere”.
The Lion have three welfare staff - two of them female - given so many players are from interstate and have young partners with children.
Ways in which they will help players’ wives while they are on road trips included things as simple as helping pre-make meals for the week on Sunday afternoons or even staying with them for a full week when they are battling with young kids.
Neale will tweak his program to attempt to bulletproof his program after calf niggles this year, but is locked in at Brisbane for the long run after earlier uncertainty.

SUITORS EMERGE FOR LEVI
Levi Casboult is staying in shape as clubs including Brisbane and Gold Coast make early inquiries about his availability.
Brisbane simply doesn’t have money to bring in an established back-up for Oscar McInerney, who was brilliant in the final against the Western Bulldogs, but he needs help.
Casboult battled a knee injury at Carlton and was delisted, but is one of a number of key-position targets the Lions could bring in on a base contract of around $120,000. plus match payments.

Rhys Mathieson’s future was up in the air given how he struggled to cement a senior spot, but has re-signed until the end of 2023. After the mayhem surrounding a potential trade request from Lachie Neale, the Brownlow Medallist said he isn’t going anywhere with two years to run on his deal.

Brisbane is weighing up several back-up big man options including ex-Carlton tall Levi Casboult and Collingwood’s Mason Cox to bolster the Lions’ tall stocks.

The Lions are considering the pair as well as contracted Cat Darcy Fort to help replace spearhead Eric Hipwood, who faces a lengthy recovery from a knee reconstruction.

Casboult, 31, was delisted from Carlton but is open to a lifeline up north, while Collingwood is yet to offer Cox, 30, a contract extension as the Magpies look to the future.

Casboult played 13 games for eight goals this year, while Cox managed seven games for eight majors in 2021.

Both players could be used in key forward-ruck roles as part of a genuine crack at a premiership for the Lions next season following a semi-final exit this season.

Geelong’s Fort, 28, is also in the frame, but is tied to the Cats for one more year and would need to be traded in exchange for a draft pick.

The Lions have won only one of their past six finals over the past three seasons and are looking at ways to improve the list despite a tight salary cap.

A priority is to beef up their ruck-key forward stocks but, after prizing Joe Daniher out of Essendon last season, Brisbane won’t be able to land another big fish recruit.

The Lions also have Oscar McInerney and Tom Fullarton, but lost Archie Smith to retirement.

The bulk of AFL clubs are dealing with tight salary caps, which has made securing star players difficult in this year’s exchange period.

Midfielder Lachie Neale is staying at Brisbane despite considering a move to Fremantle, so the Lions expect to be only minor players in the trade period.

SA rival ‘comes knocking’ for high-flying Hawk; big Blue linked to move up north: Trade Whispers (Max Laughton, Fox Sports, 27/09)

Both Queensland clubs have shown some interest in delisted Carlton tall Levi Casboult, but it’s Brisbane who appear the most keen.

The Lions are one of a number of clubs looking for a cheap ruck option and have made contact with Casboult’s camp believing he could add depth to their forward stocks as well.

Chris Fagan’s side will be without Eric Hipwood for much of 2022 due to a knee reconstruction, and Casboult - who was cut by the Blues after the season ended - would make sense to temporarily replace him.

“They’ve (Brisbane) made contact with Levi Casboult, as have the Gold Coast Suns,” SEN reporter Sam Edmund said on Trade Radio.

“Now the Suns have gone a little bit quiet on the Casboult front since Mabior Chol has joined.

“I think if you’re Levi Casboult you’re a realist, you know where you’re at with your career, you might not get another chance, but he’s kept himself fit.

“Brisbane have shown an interest but we’ll see whether they actually follow through on that, just for some support for Joe Daniher up forward as Eric Hipwood recovers.”

West Coast Eagles small forward Jarrod Cameron delisted, set to remain in Perth for WAFL (Samantha Rogers, The West Australian, 28/09)

West Coast forward Jarrod Cameron has played his last game for the Eagles.

Cameron is contracted until the end of 2022 but The West Australian understands the club will announce he has been delisted.

The 21-year old considered a move to Queensland, where older brother Charlie plays for the Brisbane Lions, but looks set to return to the WAFL next season.

Lions among clubs hunting big Cat after season on sidelines (Martin Pegan, AFL.com.au, 01/10)

GEELONG'S thin ruck stocks could take another hit with Brisbane one of the clubs coming for Darcy Fort.

The 26-year-old Fort is considering his options after failing to break through for a game this season and playing only eight matches since making his debut in 2019.

Fort had issues with his right knee throughout the pre-season but even after returning to fitness the Cats preferred to play the versatile Rhys Stanley, Mark Blicavs and Esava Ratugolea in the ruck.

"Darcy, we're looking at opportunities for him. He's contracted so if Geelong say no, then they say no,” player manager and former Essendon star Scott Lucas told Continental Tyres AFL Trade Radio.

"But if a club are open to a discussion elsewhere and it can work for both parties then we're always looking to explore."

When asked whether Brisbane might be a realistic option for Fort, his manager Lucas said, "There has been some interest".

"Rhys Stanley has signed an extension and we look at that pragmatically. Clearly they're pleased with what Rhys is doing," Lucas added.

"Darcy didn't play a game this year for Geelong, so therefore you do have a look around. There is still a fair bit of work to do but we're hopeful."

AFL Trades LIVE: ‘It’s not over’: Superstar’s bombshell move STILL on cards (Fox Sports, 05/10) [Speculation Alert]

Football journalist Sam McClure believes Brisbane Lions star Lachie Neale could yet depart the club this trade period.

Neale pledged his commitment to the Lions last month after a shock revelation that he was considering returning to Fremantle for family reasons despite having two years left on his contract at Brisbane.

But according to McClure, the 2020 Brownlow medallist’s move could still be on the cards.

Asked on 3AW’s Sportsday on Monday night whether he considered Neale’s trade link when listing the year’s biggest AFL stories, Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd said: “That he was out, and now back in?”

McClure added: “And still might be out... it’s not over.”

GEELONG won't let Darcy Fort move to Brisbane unless the Cats have secured another ruckman in the Trade Period.

The Lions have identified the 28-year-old as their ruck support for Oscar McInerney with Eric Hipwood to miss most of next year after his knee reconstruction.

But with Fort contracted for 2022, the Cats have made it clear they will not trade Fort unless they have secured more ruck depth behind Rhys Stanley, who has signed on for two more seasons with Geelong.

Geelong Confirms Interest in Ceglar and Stengle, Comments on Constable, Clark (Andrew Slevison, SEN, 06/10)

Geelong head of recruiting Stephen Wells has confirmed the club’s interest in both Jonathon Ceglar and Tyson Stengle.

Hawthorn ruckman Ceglar is believed to be on the search for a new club having been asked to explore his options elsewhere.

Wells says the Cats have shown interest in Ceglar, but will only make a move for the 30-year-old if Darcy Fort is to leave Kardinia Park for Brisbane.

“The reason we made some inquiries about Jonathon is because there was some interest in Darcy Fort from another club,” Wells said on SEN Mornings.

“So yes, we have made some inquiries but that would all be dependent on whether Darcy Fort stays at the Cats and that’s still to be worked through.

“It’s been public or reported that Brisbane have shown some interest in Darcy and that’s right. If I had to guess right now, I reckon that Darcy will still be at Geelong next year.”
