Rhys Mathieson ?.

Always seems to be 23rd, 24th, 25th man for the Lions and some decent quality in front of him.

Seb Ross could be the worst decision maker on our list.

His kicks inside 50 nearly always end up with the opposition marking it or a behind, he handballs to team mates just behind them so they lose momentum in their running and he always looks around trying to blame others when something bad happens.

Had a good final last year but his good performances are too few for mine. I honestly think he hurts us more with his decision making and skills than he helps.

Hoping tomorrow is his last game for us and then we trade him in a win/win situation and he finds success at his new club.

Yep... he's a liability.

Just a huge momentum killer for us. Time and time again.

He's basically the same as Dunstan but probably not quite as good.
Dom sheed is a good example of what Dunstan looks like in a good side. Eagles are bagging him for his deplorable kicking and his goodwill from premiership heroics are wearing thin. If Dunstan won us a grandfinal off of one set shot then went back to his usual kicking and play style how long would the good will last him as a Saint?

Whch is why I argued when we loaded up on Hill and such that those picks would have been better at the draft. Now we are in a kind of no man's land of not quite enough bedrock and not much core. Promising kids and youth start to show some consistency at around 50 games and start to peak between 100 and 150. That fits with Steele on around 97 games before this year where he's gone up a level after a really good 2020. Sinclair is around that mark too.

That means guys like Hunter clark, Gresham, Higgins, Howard etc are coming into the start of a climb. If a lot come on we will be alright but if they turn out to be just GOP level like the ones we had we will be in the wilderness for along time.
Jesus what all the gloom and doom , the AFL have made most of the teams so even there is barely 2 games separating 7th to 13th.
We now have a team far better than we have had in years and if no one can see the problems we had this year with players out didn't hurt us.
Now comparing midfield to Armitage , Dunstan , Ross and Steven to our our current one does not compare because we know have depth - take Steven out of that midfield and what have you got - a joke - Ross can't even get a start in there / we also have depth and Steele is like Lenny Hayes, King could easily be the best key forward in the AFL for years to come.

Take our backline they can all use the football , which wasn't the case 4yrs ago - Geary's never been a great kick , Brown never kicked or marked the ball , Gilbert would hit the pie stand and Savage would kick superbly 60m to some thing.

Hill , well need run and we got it - because with the amount of plodders we had didn't cut it.
We now have Howard who can kick , mark and spoil , Paton , Webster , Sinclair , Highmore , Coffield , Wilkie who are all go users of the ball.

The forward line with the types of Higgins , Butler are by far better than all the rotating forwards used in the past - Weller , Wright , Lonie.

But our midfield has now got some fire power with Steele who is a absolute star , Crouch has shown he is a very good player , Jones has speed and showed this year with a very interrupted year he is a massive upgrade and we have kids coming through like Byrne , Bytel plus Gresham after injury , add a fully fit Marshall to the mix and if you can see how far the team has come.
We now have growth upside and class from the players we have added which is about 3/4 of the squad.

We have all supported this club for years with hardly any success but just seeing a kid like Connolly given a game and showing some dare , or Sharman who can actually mark and kick straight or a little bullocking kid digging in and doing his best by far out weighs all the spuds we have had playing for this club.
And Now having high draft picks with guys like Clark , Coffield , Higgins and the progress of Max King is just a delight compared to 3 or 4 years ago.

Sometimes Gringo the glass is half full not half empty.

Another possibility…
GC sack Dew thinking players will leave (including BKing) because they are losing too many games and the players will want to play in winning teams. They bring in Ross Lyon and or a team of experienced coaches for 2022.

Dew gets an assistant coaching roll at the saints and Ben King (who is open about the fact he think Dew as great coach) leaves GC to follow Dew.

I am certain Dew would also love this as a big **** you to the AFL.

Agree with letting him go he is not the midfielder that can turn a game when needed , in 2017 and 2018 he was averaging 30 possessions a game which is huge but clubs didn't worry about him because the possessions where not hurting teams.
Our midfield is gradually getting better from where it was when he was the mainstay and regeneration of this area is working so the loss of Ross is really part of the team growing.
I fully expect we will pick up a midfielder in the trade period or draft with better kicking skills - we could easily get a guy like Hobbs who would be ideal or who knows they might get Hopper , Dunkley or Parker.
The thing is getting Ross and Dunstan off the list will create a lot more cap space and knowing Hannerbery took a salary cut , Roberton is off the books they now have serious money to throw at a star to lure to the club.
I like the sound of it but I'm resigned to not getting a super dooper mid this year coz it would cost our first pick. A value tupe like Jones is very doable and I'm seemingly on my own with getting Joey Kennedy as a FA on a 1+1 to get the Swans some cap relief.

Clarko follows to be with his mates and we win 6/7 of the next premierships

Where was this “save the Suns at all costs” mentality when the Suns let former #8 pick Peter Wright go to Essendon for a 4th round pick. Or let both their Captains (Lynch and May) walk.

The AFL shouldn’t intervene in trades unless there’s something shady going on. You’re risking the mental health and well-being of a player by holding them hostage somewhere they don’t want to be.

What are you talking about?
If Dunstan won us a grand final we’d build him a bloody statue at RSEA park. Who gives a damn what he does after that?

Love your thinking hope it comes off abs if I was a Cats fan I’d believe it
Being a Saints fan conditions you for someone to come in at the last moment and Fck everything right up!

Wouldnt surprise me if the AFL send Brad Scott to coach them next year.

We will get a talented mid in the draft like Hobbs and with the kids we have and Jones and Marshall having a uninterrupted season and Gresham we should be far better than this year just with less injuries and development.

dead right , you can't keep a player if he is not contracted and wants out of the place.

Its just business. Cut your losses and move on.
The Suns and GWS are a 30-50 year plan.

This draft period could well set us up for the best period St Kilda has had for many years - knowing we have a top 10 draft pick around the 7 mark however we will drop 2 spots to 9 due to Daicos and the Dogs father son - however this leaves The Goater around our pick.

We also have Owens , Windbager as NGA's and they will use compensation from Dunstan and Ross to secure a couple pieces we need.

I personally hope we don’t trade any in this year. I hope we trade a couple out and build up our draft hand for this year and possibly next year. Bring in some youf.

depends on the player imo. If its another 'big name' nah I wouldn't but if it's a 2nd or 3rd player the list management team have identified and will cost us not much then no issues with that.

Peter Wright, pfft.
Lynch 8 yrs was RFA, gc gets awarded pick 3 comp(Rankin), May 8 years, I think FA the following year, swapped for pick 6 ( Bing). Both heavily motivated to leave.

2021’s version of Schneider and Dempster
My Swans-supporting mate has had big wraps on McLean all year and reckons he has the potential to be a very good KPF, who has an occasional run in the ruck.

He said Buddy has been keeping him out of the team most of the year, which sounds similar to the Membrey-Goodes situation that we benefitted from some years ago.

The Swans will be keen to keep him, but returning to the Bayside area would no doubt be appealing for him.

I hope we make him a tempting offer.
