Why couldn’t he be more than a half back flanker? We have Long, Highmore, Webster etc. to fill that role. Let Coff of the leash for a few games then, worse case scenario is he fails, but gets his confidence back at attacking the ball. Besides it’s who we have now, not who we may have in the future. With our injuries of especially mids this year, what could be the harm?
He doesn’t have the tank, competitiveness or toughness to play in the middle and a winger needs a tank so he will struggle there as well. He has some tools, just lacks a couple you can’t teach.

Doesn't say much of our fitness crew- Coff should be in peak form at this stage with a good tank, but he has a few mates down there.

Coff in the midfield could be good. The dogs have a tall midfield. Bont who’s going around as one of the best players in the league right now is above 190 same as Coffield. He’s not the quickest but he has a great field kick and a strong frame to power through opponents. As Coffield bulks up a bit I could see him using his contested intercept marking and becoming a mid/forward beast for us

Don't get Ben, draft mids, keep JB, find a ben Brown or Bruce style gun forward on the cheap. Maybe Tom Mc Donald or Weed if they want opportunity?

There is a definite argument for that. I want an engine room that bats deep. If we do that, we will not only have cover for injuries, but also excellent cover. It's also imperative that we keep the youth developing to a high standard and consistently coming through. If we nail it, we can be as good as a Richmond (premierships) or Geelong (constantly there about's) That said...having Ben would make us a pretty attractive destination for a lot of talented 21-25 year olds wanting opportunity & success from other clubs. There is a romance between St.Kilda and the King's, and many are caught up in the whirlwind.
I'm just worried we'll f*CK it up and end up with nothing but s*it trucks and broken mercenaries...romance can sour quickly when you find out that your bed fellows are incompatible...we need to be clever in whatever rabbit hole we choose to go down.

Who's miserable? After a loss most people are trying to make sense of it, after a 100 point loss it's getting crazy, multiple huge losses it's pretty seriously the only place for people to debrief no matter how crazily out of whack the responses. At that point there is plenty of people trying to work out what went wrong.

You sound like the kind of guy who comes in to a wake telling people to stop bringing the mood down with their grief. I actually think the posters on here are pretty resilient and ride the rollercoaster of pain and elation that the club puts us though with plenty of humour and relatively little complaint for the lack of success.
Well one of the reasons I’ve read and posted in here a lot less in the last couple of years was that I was absolutely sick to death of your absolutely incessant “we’re shit”, “everything we do is shit”, “there’s no point doing this because we’ll just stuff it up” crap, that you post day after day after day, after day after day, week after week, month after month.

Life is far far far too short and precious to sit in here and trawl through that day doom and gloom and constant “woe-is-me” garbage day after day.

Getting out the grief at the funeral is fine and normal, but then you can also do this thing which is celebrating their life, and getting on with yours afterwards, in a way that makes you happy- which I’m sure the departed would want you to do. Rather than just continuing to grieve endlessly and NEVER LETTING IT GO.

You never let it go Gringo. You just go on and on and on and on and on with it.

Are you aware that there’s a whole lot of other things you could be doing with your life other than wallowing in constant misery about a football team?

Seriously ordinary post, this is the stuff that drives posters off forums not differing opinions and doggedness imo.

The rainbow and lollipops Barney approach frustrates me just as much but that’s what this is, a forum with different opinions that cover the whole spectrum. Imo gringo is one of the better posters on here and I find his agonising over the saints amusing. Imo gringo in other threads reveals an educated, well read and well travelled interesting personality, often one of the first with encouragement or offers of help.

So many posters have disappeared and the forum isn’t any better for it imo, can we not eat each other for a change. There’s still a lot to play out this season followed but what promises to a very interesting trade and draft period. I look forward to it, even our migratory trolls are amusing.

Aussie,
You’re an intellectual poster, and I enjoy reading you.
Gringo is emotional, and I enjoy reading him.
You both have equally valid, though completely different, views.
But the both of you are a measure of where the fan base sits at any one time.
So please, don’t let your frustration with him stop you from posting because my life would be poorer as a result.

Seriously great post, wouldn’t be on here half as much if it wasn’t for gringo and like you said one of the first to check in and make sure you’re ok

Why don't you use the ignore function if you can't handle my posts. That's literally what it's for.

Put him on ignore then. What an over the top unnecessary post.

Ben would cost 2 first round picks.

Over the last 4 years we've used picks 4, 24 and 36 on key forwards.

If we were to spend that on Ben there would not be a club in the comp to have used so much currency on key forwards over such a short period.

And we still have one of the weakest midfields in the comp.

I love the idea of Ben in a Saints jumper but we need to get our priorities right.

I think everyone would feel less nervous about the price of king if we had used 24 on a mid

Koby, Mccartin, Roberton, Armitage, Jack Steven. Soon to add Carlisle.

Has there been a club in the last 5 years that has been culled as bad as ours with career ending injuries?

I’ve included Jack - as we let him go to try and let him continue his career (didn’t work).

I understand and get your frustration. But we need to draw a line and judge the club under Lethers tenure. This is his footy department.

I would say that it actually has been a decent outcome since 2018 in terms of building.

2018
Still on list: King Bytel Wilkie / not on list: Parker Young Hind
Trades: Hanners and Kent

2019:
Still on list:Byrnes Connolly / Not on list: Bell
Trades: Howard, Ryder, Hill, Butler, Jones

2020:
Still on list: Highmore and Allison
Trades/Free agent: Crouch and Higgins

Only decision that is frustrating under him is Hind and we had a deal Infront of him. So not like we wanted him out. Hanners is annoying because when he plays. He plays pretty bloody well. He just doesn’t get on the park. That doesn’t bother me.

Overall that nucleus is pretty good and makes up the majority of our best 22. The issue with losing 2 first rounders for Ben is the lack of them across the 3 year period beginning from this year.

Which is why we need one more.

Overall - looking at the above. The club has been doing alright at the table. I still think Ratten is the right bloke aswell.

So much this

Which is why you wait for Ben to fall out of contract

I agree, take him whenever he says yes and pay the price.

That said, personally I'd rather 2x Top 10 mids this year (sorry JB) and Bing next year
fu** sake mate.

He won’t be an unrestricted free agent until something silly like 2026. If he goes into the draft next year - he ends up at Hawthorn or North.

I think it all comes down to the situations. Saints are in a mire at the moment and it's very hard wanting something positive when all you read is negativity. Not having a dig at your posting gringo2011, just putting it in context for others as it's just the state of play I feel.

We want something positive right now to prove there is something good coming, it's hard to see that when alot of people see gloom at the moment

Getting Ben King doesn't win us a flag.

I think the Kings are going to be very special players indeed.

Having one of them and then snaring the second one, particularly from a building club, is the sort of thing you’d expect to happen for a big club.

Power clubs pick up all the good players originally drafted interstate.

Players fall over themselves to play for Hawthorn (once) and Richmond (now) just so they can collect a premiership medallion.

Geelong, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood etc get kissed on the dick with father/sons.

Geelong also pick up at will any player who was conceived within 200kms of Corio Bay.

We miss out on getting anything.

So yes we need mids.

And yes Ben King doesn’t guarantee a flag.

But the Kings will be special. And rival fans will drool.

So I just want them both at the Saints.

I want rival fans to finally be envious of us for some reason.

I honestly don't give a shit. I am what I am, if I shit people off they are very welcome to ignore me. I like ARRs posts but I don't care if he blocks me either. I'll happily read his statathons and enjoy them. He seems a bit dry at times but he's pretty knowledgeable too, we agree on a lot but he's like someones uptight grandma while I'm more like the drug effected uncle who tries to shag her dog and pinch her jewellery. I'm not everyone's cup of tea, that's cool.
