Sure the line and specialist coaches come under question when we have performances as bad as our recent efforts, but it is a bit rich making these claims now. I would place more weight on criticism laid based on specific performance criteria fails, especially if they were made when the team was doing OK, rather than in response to these current performance fails.
It almost seems as if some of us are lashing out without the evidence to justify the claims (except the current performance).

There was a discussion around the disappointment of not bringing in assistants from other clubs when we appointed Ratten and it was also brought up last off season when good assistants were losing their job due to covid.

It's not entirely new.

So my understanding is there is a brief period each year where trades are allowed. Is that correct? If so when is that window? How many trades will a team typically make?

Free Agency period starts the week after the Grand Final and goes for a week I think.

After that there is a 2 week trade window.

It's too long and all could be cut down to a week but I think the AFL like to stay in the news for a few extra weeks.

Could be done 3 days

I'm consistent, I've questioned the set up for years. Skrobo and Hammill are always in my sights but a few more are copping it as I spread my displeasure around. Ratts has had his honeymoon end and and Lade who seems like a good bloke has lost all of his gloss. We don't even question Danny Sexton any more. He's untouchable.

David Rath should be questioned, he's a high priced footy department member who is apparently a genius of strategy while we seem to be the one club that has failed to even slightly adapt to new rules that have completely changed the tempo and style of footy.

When you look at sides playing well in 2021 it seems to be the era of the lead up forward who has had the ball delivered quickly before zones can be set. We move the ball slowly and allow the opposition to zone and we set up as a forward cluster and try to let the ball fall out the back to the smalls. Apparently we don't care because we are footy purists and traditionalists and we think it's ugly.

Ok, I might he wrong but the Saints side has him as forward.

Not sure where that would leave the other guy?
Skrob is doing the forward this year with some help from Roughead.

The Saints have had a slight shake-up of roles following COVID-19 as Brett Ratten prepares for his second full campaign at the helm. Brendon Lade returns to manage the midfield unit on his own this year, swapping with Adam Skrobalak who shifts to the forwards. Stoppages and team structure assistant Robbie Chancellor, who was let go last year due to COVID-19 cut, has landed the role as Western Jets coach in the NAB League. Aaron Hamill remains as the backline coach and will be supported by development coach Jake Batchelor who will also coach the Saints' VFL alignment club Sandringham. Ben McGlynn has been promoted to the Saints' head of development, while Nathan Lovett-Murray has assisted on the training track this summer, combining his welfare role with development coaching. Jarryd Roughead continues in his football department role that includes working with the young key forwards, while the Saints are working through options to keep leadership mentor Billy Slater onboard in 2021. – Mitch Cleary

Why don't we look at getting Rhys Mathieson. Can't break into the lions best 22, Good midfielder with the ability to hit the scoreboard. Victorian boy who could be lured home.

"Rhys Mathieson – who was an AFL substitute in round one but has yet to play a senior game this year – had a day out in front of the big sticks, kicking four goals straight from his 18 disposals."

I am absolutely sure that some of the more astute observers were making comment on exactly the same issues last year too.

Would rather Ely Smith. He looked good in his draft year. I think he must have been injured though, haven't heard much of him lately. Matho looks like he must be a pretty limited player, he's never played many consistent AFL games.

Melbourne has Richo & Williams, Port has Vossy, Geelong has Knights, Sydney has Pyke. It’s not a science behind the successful teams having strong assistants. In my opinion it’s what we’re severely lacking. Ratts needs someone strong under him helping. Lade is great with the players, but lacks what all the strong assistants have. Experience.

Some very good people lost assistant coaching jobs and we seem to have let the opportunity to nab them slip. Leppisch seems to have won a heap of fans since he started on radio, clubs will be lining up for his services. I wouldn't mind Craig Jennings as a director of the coaching strategy either.

Ratts seems like a modern coach in that he hands over areas and puts trust in zones to run their own show.....which is great as long as your line coaches are good enough to not need hand holding.

I’d prefer to not go for another assistant coach. But get one that’s had senior experience before. I’d go all in for Bucks if I could. Or Leppitsch as you mentioned.

After a year in the media, it might be difficult to get someone back as a full time assistant considering how much extra work is being expected of them with the football department spending cut.
100% but we'd be mad not to ask the question.

I think the AFL will start to take notice of the extra work load the coaches are getting now and it will eventually start going back the other way.
