Same game Lonie kicked four or five without breaking a sweat.

Can only report what I saw. SASaints was also there that day. I have watched plenty of VFL with the likes of Dnstan, Acres, Hanners a couple of times and a few other seniors playing mid for the Saints.

Have been going to VFL for many years. Have never seen a mid play like he did that day. he was actually better after Hanners went off for the last qtr. Does it mean he is the next Bont? Hardly. All I am doing is reporting from my limited knowledge as a football supporter and the impression made on me by his performance.
I don't know if he will convert it to seniors performances, as a few have pointed out, he hasn't as yet, and even with 8 tackles and 2 goals, 17 possessions for an inside mid wont cut it, even though I thought his game was pretty good for a young bloke.

With Dunstan not there next year, it is his opportunity to take. Up to him, I think he has what it takes and I am sure everyone here will want him to make it.

It's not an ego thing, I didn't spot him, just saw him play this year. The kid has had less than 20 games, lets see him after a few more.

I'm actually a fan and think he might be a gun but I try not to bank guys who've done **** all as finished articles any more. I was sucked in by Acres and Billings and Newnes and all the other promising kids once. Now I'm old and jaded and know that only a handful of kids go on to play 100 games and a lot less than that go on to be A graders and then even less than that absolute top shelf stars. Early on I was raving about his disposal out of a contest too, he's got some great traits but he's just at the start of what could be a great career or an unfulfilled dream. oNly time will tell.

Would like them to use Bytel as they did a young Jack Steele. as a tagger on their best mid. Richo cops it from this forum but that development of Steele has made him what he is today. Kudos to Richo for that credit where it is due.

Bytel could do much worse to be led to the ball by the likes of Oliver, McRea, Merrett, Dangerfield, Fyfe etc.

He's been lined up on some of the best at stoppages. He's stood Dusty Bont and others, not playing a hard tag though.

The sad thing about this post is we could have had a few of these.

Bulldogs in a grand final with Smith, Bont and Naughton vs Billings, Clark and McCartin.

And some still maintain our recruiting hasn’t been a problem. Nailing top 10 draft picks is 101. Demons and Bulldogs are the perfect examples of this. Throw in Port Adelaide too.

Melbourne have come good after being putrid. Scully Trengove Toumpas Tapscott Morton Gysbert and so on.

Sometimes you get lucky. What would we look like if McCartin was 40 goal a year key forward with Max King.

The only issue being is we are about to be bringing in 3 genuine midfield prospects, one of whom will be a top 10 pick. All three of them expecting to compete for Byrnes’ spot. Eventually might come too late for a value pick midfielder when there’s ready to go top midfield prospects coming through
You say that, but they’ll be 18-19 and coming off barely any footy due to COVID. If they can get ahead of Byrnes and Bytel by even mid year they’ll surely become serious players.

His kicking was a bit iffy as a junior, I think kicking on the run makes it messy, he's good currently because he's generally disposing on the outside and standing still. I'm not sure the kicking is going to stand up when he returns to the middle. That said Treloar can't kick well but he make sh*t happen. I'm not as obsessed with clean disposal as some. Melbourne aren't super clean but the run and carry like a ferret on amphetamines. Geelong play accurate and clean, so do West Coast. Both have struggled recently as sides emulate Richmond moving the ball too quick for sides to set up.
Yeah it's the nature of an inside role that lowers the disposal efficiency of a midfielder. His kicking in space has had nice penetration and he goes for kicks that open the game up but are higher in difficulty. I quite like the Treloar comparison for Byrnes. Hazing a turn of speed will help his disposal too, if he can get out of stoppages into some space.

We've seen top draft pick midfielders be able to instantly impact even this year so there's definitely a chance that at least the top 10 one will be looking to burst straight into the side. There's also a bit of pressure to get a look at a top draft pick since they become the hopes and dreams of the supporter base quickly. Imagine us fawning over a young Bytel or Byrnes like mid but with the excitement and pedigree of a top 10 pick like King.

Scully and Trengove was 12 years ago and the draft we took Nick Winmar and they took Gawn a few afterwards. We refused a trade for Ball which might have got us Mitch Duncan or Gunston.

Paddy played 4 seasons for 35 games and 34 goals. Cooper Sharman, 5 games one as a sub that didn't get on the field. 10 goals. Paddy might have been a 40 goal forward, but we had one in Bruce and we didn't want him.

Ps , I'm not having a go at Sinc's , I'm just saying he wasn't elite in his first year , Same as Marshall wasn't elite in his first year and still isn't elite
Didnt he play just about every game in his first year? I seam to remember some controversy when he'd played so many game we were going to have to drop him back to tne vfl because of whatever the 'rookie list' rules were back then.

I don't know where they are going to play Geary next year, I thought that he might hang up the boots?

More a coach paid as a player IMO, playing at Sandy developing kids.

Yep, looked a gun small forward/hhf who had 19 and 2 goals in his second game. Kicked 18 goals in his first year too and we moved him out of there as you do......if you're Richo.

We wouldn’t accept the pile of shit Collingwood offered for Ball. McCartin had far greater forward smarts than Bruce but unfortunately concussions ruined him.

Melbourne also had four picks in that draft before they took Gawn.

There are many, many, many stupid decisions made by our list management over the years.

My personal favourite of which being picking up Ryan Gamble in the 2010 AFL Draft, who played 11 games and was delisted at the end of that same season, while Tom Lynch, who only played in 5 games that season was traded to Adelaide and went on to became that very 3rd tall we were desperate for.

Is that when they appointed Richo as an assistant coach?

2019 - Dee's finished 17th. Defensive structures were crap, possibly the easiest team to score against in the comp.

August 2019 Richo appointed Director of Coaching

2020 They finish 9th.

2021 Richo promoted to General Manager AFL Performance (overseeing coaching, high performance, medical, performance psychology and skill development)

Dee's finish 1st.

I think the last 3 years have been good. King looks a worthy first rounder. A lot of those others before that are not quite more than B graders.

If you look at the 2017 list -so the list before the last three drafts, Marshall, Steele, Membrey and Sinclair the only ones above B graders. Ross, Dmac, Webster, Gresham, Billings, Ross, Dunstan, Lonie, Geary, Battle and Joyce are the others we have left. Steele is the only elitish one. After this year we will have likely delisted or moved on 33 out of 45 listed in 2017.
A 70% clean out.
Wow. ☹️
That really is an indictment on the club.
If that 2017 list had been at all adequate, what would the turnover have been in the last four years?
Something like 14-16 players?
Say 25-30%?
🥺
As time has gone on, and I’ve gained separation from the previous list management/coaching panel/administration, I can appreciate their pre 2018 performance with a greater clarity.
I know that’s not a newsworthy item but we all come to our Damascene moments at a different speed.

If McCartin had turned into a 40 goal a year forward, King would have gone before our then lower draft pick and be playing for someone else.

Despite injuries & covid interruptions he’s been in a pro environment & spent three years under the iron to build up his body. He needs to be aiming for regular senior footy next year. I mean how long do you give them? I think by the fourth year as a midfielder (rucks/talls different) expectations start to rise.
Well the club has preferred him to Dunny so that should tell you a bit. If not for a career best patch of games from Dunny they'd probably have stuck with Bytel most of the year.

Wasn't it a second round pick?

The Dees still have a star from it while we have **** all from Brendan Goddard in 2002 until Max King in 2018. That is criminally incompetent. **** all rising stars, **** all AAs from the guys picked in that era says we had a serious problem that was routinely ignored. Trout was an assistant coach who left and came back asking for a job so we just gave him something that wouldn't matter...the senior recruiting role. After John Beverage we sucked at drafting.

McCartin was pretty ordinary, a couple of times he looked like he might be coming good and then injured himself. I remember a guy from the TAC competition saying (about Paddy and Boyd) that taking a KPF from the TAC was dangerous because they couldn't zone so big kids could just throw smaller opponents out of the way and dominate.

With Cooper Sharman kicking ten goals from rour games. than would give him 50plus in a season.

It was actually 4 games, he didn't get on the park in one of them.
