They inquiry about anyone like most the teams, at least we do it a bit more discretely.
Having Billings and Ross still unsigned means they could be weighing what happens during trade period because they know most teams would be waiting if any salary cap openings happen to let teams fit them in.
A hell of a lot will depend on if one , both or none move on.

I feel this draft could be one of the strongest in depth for a long time , just the lack of games because of Covid 19 has most probably hidden the quality of a lot of players.

I totally agreed with this draft being the strongest in depth for a long time, the next couple of years are going to be extremely hit and miss.

It's exactly why I've suggested trading next years first into this years draft somehow.

We could then take 2 top 10-12 picks to the draft and take two midfielders.

Who was the last top 10 pure midfielder we drafted?

David Armitage 2006 pick 9

That's just sad!

I think Clark was a pure mid. We just decided not to use him like that.

If I remeber correctly he did play alot of HBF in his bottom age year and moved into the middle in his top age due to injury.

Even if Clark is considered a pure mid he's the only one we've drafted since 06 and we're not even playing him as a mid.

Which is also sad.

If we get a decent run with injuries, we’ll be a much improved team next year.

To really contend though it’s going to require Clark and Gresham to become our best mids after Steele. If that happens, then those three with Jones, Crouch and the rucks we have a top 4 midfield.

Thoughts on Riley Bonner
Gets smashed by port supporters
Out of co tract this year…looked great tonight against bulldogs, broke lines and looked quick…

Macrae (pick 6), Bont (4), Libba (F/S), Smith (7), Hunter (F/S), Dunkley (25).

Petracca (2), Oliver (4), Viney (F/S), Brayshaw (3), Langdon (54).

Would be nice to nail our top end draft picks on solid midfielders.

The sad thing about this post is we could have had a few of these.

Bulldogs in a grand final with Smith, Bont and Naughton vs Billings, Clark and McCartin.

And some still maintain our recruiting hasn’t been a problem. Nailing top 10 draft picks is 101. Demons and Bulldogs are the perfect examples of this. Throw in Port Adelaide too.

We have been saying that since 2013. Started to address it with Steele, then Jones, then Crouch. All recruited. Gres spends his time injured, Clark will come on.

We should have pick Petracca been done to death, Bont over Billings, Bont obviously better but Billings not a bust.

Clark a mid to come on, Coff another HBF selection.
I could see the ability of Bailey Smith but over Max King? Oh how I wished we had 2 firsts in that draft.
So except for McCartin, our top end picks have been ok. Naughton was selected as a back, like G Train, and became a forward.

Not sure about Alison, was there any elite mids @26 last year.

Top end has been just a pass bottom end excellent,
Bytel
Byrnes
Connelly
Sharman

We only get moans from the usuals in hindsight.
Why never a mention of Wilkie, Highmore, Marshall etc?

The victim mentality gets tiresome.

Why is it victim mentally to acknowledge that the list needs work. It gets tiresome hearing how great we are when it doesn't actually translate.Last year this forum was all over Poulter at the Allison pick.

Yeah, just plain bad luck. Without the concussion issues, McCartin would have much better player than Petracca or Naughton.

Agree
Hopefully the club realise how far our midfield is off being a top 4 side

My wish for next year.... when the time trial results come out, Hunter Clark is top 10. That will get me excited.

There's no point whinging about Naughton, we have a bloke named King that will be as good if not better.

We need mids to come through. Clark will be amazing if he can get the tank.

We have to nail all our high picks from here on in. Libba has been amazing with his late picks but he needs to start getting every first rounder on target. It will still be the most likely path to being a competitive finals side. The frustrating thing about Naughton is it's another example of a player taken the pick after ours that looks elite. It's like the footy gods just want to torture us.

Luke Dunstan will be amazing if he can just get his tank up. Blake Acres is the GOAT but just not being played in his ideal position. Jack Billings is better than Bont now. We have to stop making excuses and start making hay.

We don't know about that. He looked ok on the field but was an injury bust.

I always wanted Petracca.

I also find it amusing that we were crying out for mids, so took two who could develop into mids( Coff looks like a genuine HBF'er) but now people are moaning Naughton who was drafted as a defender.

Wonderful.

What this says to me is you need to build a core at the draft & compliment at the trade table. Hawks & Cats did this successfully & then tried to buy more flags at the trade table & failed miserably. Could argue Sydney did this with Buddy & are learning that lesson. On the other hand Tigers, Dogs & Dees did this successfully (core from draft). We need to keep focusing on the draft & hope our home grown blokes like Clark, Gresham, King etc come on. I’ll also put Steele in that basket seeing as we recruited him via a trade as a 20 year old. Please no more Hill & Hanneberry trades. They kill lists. You get those blokes to complement your list when you are ready to make the jump from top 4 to flag (see Lynch to Tigers).

Wasn't directed at you and where has anyone said it didn't need work.

Who said the list is great? I always wanted and still do want mids. Was appalled not getting Petracca.

I can comment on people whinging about the selection of Clark and Coff over Naughton considering he was a defender.

I made an exception of King but really wanted Bailey Smith, we couldn't get him.

Of course the list needs work. We need another quality mid like Steele, I just get sick of the victim mentality of Harry hindsights who change like the wind (see Naughton comments).

We should get the best possible mid in the draft, and should always improve our list. It is easy to criticise and be negative but there needs to be a balance.

Still we came 9th and have made finals once in decade. If we don't improve our list it will be another decade.

Nothing is ever as bad as it seems or as good as it seems. There needs to be balance and facts need to be borne out.

Libba has had how many FRDP's to work with?

Did he pick in 2017? Can't remember

King was a no brainer in 2018

None in 2019

Alison @26. Well I don't know the draft well enough but after finding Bytel and Byrnes late he could have found a good mid especially after Sharman was selected.

Needs to nail the best mid @9 and hope the academy kids get past 20.

Need to emulate the Dees 2019 draft. Jackson & Kosi are guns! Plus they nailed the Oliver & Petracca picks & traded in established gun defenders (May & Lever).

They also made some tough calls such as trading out Hogan to get May.

Our 2013/14 drafts were like Melbourne’s drafts from the first rebuild when they took Trengove, Scully (traitor) & Morton.

Hopefully the Max King draft is our Petracca/Oliver moment where we’ve turned it around.

We desperately need Clark to get to work this preseason. The coach should be having tough conversations with him about pulling his finger out. We shouldn’t be blaming the coach for not playing him in the midfield. Clark needs to own it & give the coach no other choice!

Also, no more stupid trades like Hill & Hanneberry. Jones & Higgins type trades yes please.
Agree with your post all bar Demons nailed the Petracca pick.
They were gifted that pick from the team we support.

But all Clark has to do to take Crouch is do what he’s already doing a lot better. The other mids do things he just can’t do. Like run fast or be dynamic

They’re very different players. Hunts may do the spectacular occasionally but he’s currently a long way behind Crouch’s output.

We need both of them up & firing in the midfield.

Yes but I understand that our recruiters from the start saw Allison as an elite CHB, and that's how they've been training him since he came through the door. Now if in two years time he and Howard are the pillars of our defence for the next 5 to 8 years, will people be offering retrospective compliments on the draft selection? Given they just delisted Clav, I would say that supports what role they see Allison developiing into in the future.

I won’t argue the 2 best midfields are in the grand final, that’s fact.

but let’s not act like these 2 clubs are genius recruiters.
There is a lot of luck involved.

dogs:
Libba, hunter, Wallis, JUH, now Sam Darcy, all gifts from the AFL system that is yet to throw a bone our way.

2018 they took smith in a great top 10 class, we got King so no complaints.

2017 there was a clear top 5, classically we sat at 7 and 8, got our pick of the next half dozen did well with Clark/coff avoided busts in bonar/Fogarty. We weren’t in the market for a CHB prior to Carlisle injury, dogs took naughton as their midfield was already full of guns.

blessed with the #4 pick2013 in a year where there was a clear set in stone top 3.
If they finished below us, they would have taken Billings 100% as he was the best bet to be a 200 gamer after Kelly.
It wasn’t recruiting genius it was just great luck.

also blessed in 2012 when the had 5 and 6..... weak draft,
SOS took orourke and plowman.
Fellow genius recruiters Melbourne took Toumpas.
Let macrae and stringer fall right in the dogs lap.

Credit where it’s due to Melbourne, they came out of 2019 with the best ruck and best small forward (Jackson and Pickett) but they were able to do that because mids already set.

they got Oliver at 4 but would have taken shache if they were at 2.

we took paddy and allowed them to get the 2 best mids that year in trac and Angus at 2/3.

they also used high picks on hogan, Toumpas, cook, gysberts, Trengove, watts, blease, Morton, grimes, traded a 12 for Mitch Clark. All busts.

viney father son gift.
