Bit like Marshall and Sharman
Ps , I'm not having a go at Sinc's , I'm just saying he wasn't elite in his first year , Same as Marshall wasn't elite in his first year and still isn't elite

I should also mention that the player I’m most bullish on is Byrnes.

Has all the traits to get the most out of his football career. Hard worker, genuinely wants to learn and has captain material written all over him.

In terms of his playing style he has similarities to a Jack Steven/Lachie Neale type where he wasn’t a high pick, started playing as a forward with small stints in the midfield but has that contested ability and quick burst from from stoppage. He gets to the right areas to receive the ball as well which is highlighted by his high number of marks for someone that plays the role he does.

Yep that's fair
Not many are elite 1st year

You cant use the Neale type as i said that ages ago about him ;)

Was touted as a FRDP and then was out a year with his back.
Debatable if that will affect his career.

Ok. Very big caveat on this. It was a very lowly Essendon VFL team and we absolutely pumped them. I was about to go at 3/4 but stayed specifically to watch Bytel absolutely tear it up in the guts, he must have got every clearance for the qtr, about 7, there was one he didn't as he was on the bench.
His disposal must have gone @ near 100%.

He was the closest thing to Bont I had seen in a Saints jersey.
Look I am a mug punter, and it was VFL. Plenty can kill it at VFL and spud it up in the seniors, the opposition was ordinary but Bytel was more than a prospect. Hanners played that game and Bytel made him look second rate.

His game v Freo was a good start, needs to get about 8 more possessions so a 25 possession 8 tackle 2 goal game would be eye catching.

He made me a believer that day v Essendon.
His Freo game was promising with the goals. Another you'd love to see come top 10 in the time trial. You're spot on, if he can develop a tank and start getting 25+ a game then we will know what he is. The question is can he develop the tank required to be an AFL mid.

Always been a very smart player with very good skills regardless of where he was drafted.
Again your not getting it , correct draft positions don't matter, i was just saying that you telling me he was elite at the same stage as Leo was a tad over the top ,,, Anywho

I didn't say Sinclair was an elite player from the moment he started. But he's skills have always been top notch and he has always had very high football smarts which made up for a lot of his weaknesses.

We really haven't nailed drafts since we got Brendan Goddard though, there is luck and then there is incompetence. Melbourne and Dogs have busts but when they get them right they get them really right. We've blown a multitude of drafts and traded out of others and have fu** all to show for it. Even Carlton have nailed some of their firsts in Walsh and McKay types. We have to get that right or we will sit in this 9th to 15th range for ever.
King, gresh, Clark, Coffield, Billings in the first round.

Marshall, Sinclair, Paton, Sharman, Bytel, Byrnes, Connolly, Wilkie, highmore later picks.

trading in Steele, higgins, crouch, Howard, Butler, Jones, hill, membrey.

not bad recruiting for the last 8 years. Even when injuries ruined mccartin, Goddard, hanners and Jake.

problem is all we have to show before that. Whereas melb already had viney, MacDonald and max the pussy destroyer Gawn on their list prior to 2013.
and that’s where I think we are at, a couple of stars and a bit of tall depth behind the 8 ball.

And just for anyone thinking im having a crack at him , Below is what i posted a year ago

I know Byrnes first game was a let down to some , iv seen enough to know he will be starting 22 next season , he was playing better than Bytel in the practice games , i think the moment just got to him

So you didnt say this ?

but Sincs has alway had elite vision and next level football smarts

I don’t know how others don’t see it but to me Jack Bytel looks so much like another young Jack who went on to become one of the best kids in the game and captain St kilda
Need to see glimpses at senior level. I wasn’t expecting him to play 22 games & average 25 disposals this year but would’ve liked to see him put one or two games together where he found it 25+ at the top level. Doesn’t need opportunities, needs to demand opportunity.

Stop it.

Great minds think alike
My post from Oct last year

Leo looks like he has a very good brain and is a good user of the ball , Byrnes is just a see ball get ball and take off with his speed ( reminds me of a young Lachie Neale ) with more pace and Bytel hopefully turns out to be a Jack Steele clone , if that all works out we are in for some fun

Saying one attribute a player has is top level - so in this case Sinclair and his vision/footy smarts - isnt saying that he is an elite player. It's just praising one aspect of his game.

There are a lot of things he's had to work on over the journey to get himself to the level he is now. But he's had the natural smarts since day 1.

Couldn’t agree more with you on these comparisons.
I envy the blokes that can go watch training and match sim stuff, as that’s where you can genuinely see the potential in young players.
