It was actually 4 games, he didn't get on the park in one of them.

Unfair to use his medical sub game to extrapolate his goal kicking.
So its 8 goals for 3 games.
We can expect well over 100 goals from him next year.

Ratten is out of contract next year, if we are anything less than 3-3 after the first 6 rounds I think he's gone as we'll probably be playing catchup for the rest of the season and might end up in the same position we did this year. Good start is monumental for us but also probably his career as a coach.

If McCartin had turned into a 40 goal a year forward, King would have gone before our then lower draft pick and be playing for someone else.

We may have been good enough for Dylan Shiel to say yes to us and give up Max king pick.
We would have Shiel and mcartin, no thanks and might have had pick ten instead of 5…so many ifs and buts

Max could be the next big thing. I am happy it worked out that he is a saint.

Plenty on here and SS including I think Big Mart that thought that a fat diabetic that would need luck to meet expectation was a poor choice. I remember people thinking that head knocks could be an issue early on even.
There was an article that was released that showed even Richo was very concerned about taking Paddy at No.1 but he was overruled by the recruiting department,, it read like they were determined to recruit a Key Forward for the post Roo era.

In an alternate universe we pick Petracca at pick 1.
Unfortunately he gets hit by a bus and never plays again, while McCartin has better fortune, avoids the head knocks and is crafting a career as a powerful forward.

WTF selectors, why would you get a mid anyway when we needed a key forward? Useless. Typical St Kilda. I'm sure I'll still be upset about this in 7 years.

A 70% clean out.
Wow. ☹️
That really is an indictment on the club.
If that 2017 list had been at all adequate, what would the turnover have been in the last four years?
Something like 14-16 players?
Say 25-30%?
🥺
As time has gone on, and I’ve gained separation from the previous list management/coaching panel/administration, I can appreciate their pre 2018 performance with a greater clarity.
I know that’s not a newsworthy item but we all come to our Damascene moments at a different speed.
It had to be done and now we have a squad with potential and bringing in guys like Crouch , Higgins , Allison , Highmore , Sharman and Heath could well be one of our best trade years and we did it with hardly any high draft picks.
The transformation is dramatic and credit must be given to all involved and anyone doubting our future only have to look at this season with the amount on players we had out during the year and only just missed the finals.

After supporting this team for many years it just seems we now have a professional management and it starting to show how we are now prioritizing our best players with contracts worth of their position in the squad.

It yet to best scene our our younger bridge develop but we couldn't be more happier with the like's of King , Higgins , Sharman and the unknown development of Hunter Clark , Coffield , Battle , Bytel , Connolly , Byrne , Allison , Heath.

Too many of our players over the last 6-8 years have had a golden run when it comes to contracts due to having no elite talent.

The banker should sit them down and compare how much they have earned in comparison to actual A grade players over the same period. Most of them would not even lift their heads up to look as they would know its day light robbery they committed.

Paying Ross/Billings etc the same as Chris Judd. Pelican & Trout 4lyfe

Twomey's top 30 in that year have turned out to be a real mixed bag, some elite, some very good, some good, some GOP's and some spuds. Pick and hope.

I'd trust Cal more than I would our recruiting department over the last 10 years

Mate , if you believe half the stuff on here you will send yourself mental , there are a lot of darts getting thrown in here

I thought that was the point of being a Saints fan… am I not doing it right if I don’t send myself mental??

Jks jks, I don’t believe it as such, just wanted to see if it would spark any conversation on the matter. I’m very interested in seeing how we handle that CHB conundrum, especially with some of the players leaving the club this year.

Yeah there are gun big mids in the comp. There are also gun mids who aren’t big (Neale, Lyons, Laird, Walsh, Merrett, Parish, Miller, Parker, Liberatore, Treloar, Shuey, J Kelly, T Kelly, Boak, Zorko, Mitchell, Adams, Selwood, Prestia, Edwards & plenty more).

Height in midfielders is nice, but it’s not essential to have multiple big midfielders to be a contender. Richmond didn’t, Hawthorn didn’t, West Coast didn’t. Getting enough elite midfielders is the requirement, if they are tall then it’s a nice bonus. Not saying height doesn’t matter, but there is no blueprint/example of a team where it makes it clear that multiple tall mids are needed.
I didnt say multiple- I said a big body midfielder. Get it right. I never said a blueprint for multiple tall mids is needed. Hawthorn had Hodge and lewis- big crash and bash, WB had Bont and Dunkley, Geelong had joel corey and C.Ling and Duncan. Richmond had Martin as I explained at least twice. Look at the teams in this years final.

In that alternate universe we could have taken Ben Brown as a rookie, the year before he was drafted.
Roo, Petracca, Ben Brown, Carlisle.

I wasn't asking you specifically, but when you list those names as not being elite in their first year - despite how their career panned out, I just thought I'd throw out the question. I can't think of any player in the last 20 years that was elite from year 1.

Buckley and Judd probably the closest Rowell looked like he was going to be, Selwood right up there

From Ratten

The growth of Sharman and Highmore leaves the Saints with a decision on swingman Josh Battle who is expected to stay at Moorabbin after his name was floated in recent trade talks.

"Sometimes your flexibility is your greatest strength but your greatest weakness too," Ratten said.

"He's had some good success on the wing, he's had good success as the second ruck, but he probably hasn't nailed the tall (spot) at either end.

"That's something we're discussing, do we give him a preferred end to go to? We've got to make sure we look after him, he's had a couple of stress fractures, that's probably the talking point as to where we shape him.

"We think we'll still keep him through the midfield at times and pick an end to go to."
