I wouldnt be taking anything higher than 18
I like battle but if he doesn't cement a spot next year we're gonna lose him for change at the end of it. A few years back when he played chb we could have got something good for him, but now it's not looking likely. And he's behind highmore and wilkie.. if I was him I'd get a few strands of their hair and a voodoo doll, cos he aint getting a game as a KPD unless one of them go down

His Freo game was promising with the goals. Another you'd love to see come top 10 in the time trial. You're spot on, if he can develop a tank and start getting 25+ a game then we will know what he is. The question is can he develop the tank required to be an AFL mid.
Fwiw, pretty sure he came top 10 time trial in 2020

He is a very good endurance runner the reason they have been using him in the midfield / wing , if he does click in that position he will be a beast , next year we will see what happens.
I always remember him saying his preferred position is forward and I feel Membery position would suite him.

Is it any coincidence that our best draft steals in recent years have all come from the SANFL? Wilkie (North Adelaide), Highmore (South Adelaide), Sharman (WWT). I wonder if we’re keeping a close eye specifically on South Australia to find overlooked talent. Hunter hasn’t worked out yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we pick up another SANFL player late in the draft. Extra points if he’s a mature-aged recruit.

We've only got Picks 9, 46 and 64 and we have a couple of likely NGA's so there's not going to be much left over for anybody.

But No 16 from South Adelaide looks likely.

I didnt say multiple- I said a big body midfielder. Get it right. I never said a blueprint for multiple tall mids is needed. Hawthorn had Hodge and lewis- big crash and bash, WB had Bont and Dunkley, Geelong had joel corey and C.Ling and Duncan. Richmond had Martin as I explained at least twice. Look at the teams in this years final.
We already have one in Steele, so if we need more, that would mean we need multiple. You say we need to go and a 190cm plus midfielder, but several of the ones you reference are less than that - Oliver (187), Petracca (186), Martin (187), Lewis (186), Hodge (185), Wines (187).

I agree that having a balanced midfield with some bigger bodies is important, but I don't think we have an overly small midfield. Height can be a nice bonus, but it's not a necessity, particularly when we aren't devoid of it.

I don't think size is an issue at all in our midfield.

Steele, Crouch, Bytel all big bodied mids and hopefully another off season in the gym and Clark can work on those spagghetti arms as well.

We really need a bit more class in there IMO, someone that can cover the ground like Walsh and Merrett etc.

If they happen to have a bit of size well that's just an added bonus I guess.

Ratten is out of contract next year, if we are anything less than 3-3 after the first 6 rounds I think he's gone as we'll probably be playing catchup for the rest of the season and might end up in the same position we did this year. Good start is monumental for us but also probably his career as a coach.
Every year it's a poor start it seems, 50-50 constantly.

Get ourselves fit and win 75% of games early in the season. If you're fit and prepared, teams can jump good sides early in the season and get a few handy wins.

We never do though!

Who is elite in their first year?
I actually think that the players who have an elite first season generally don't go on to be the best players. It happens all the time, the media jump on the young player then they never get much better while the other slower burners from the draft go past them.
Look just at recent history, rozee, Dunstan, Stephenson etc.

The very best players (Brownlow medallist type players) tend to be a slightly slower burn and come really good in their 4th to 5th season

4 out of the first 5 in 2019!!

(then lost the next 4)

Not to keep prolonging the half-life of the 2014 draft but I recall a few articles detailing St.K continually rejecting GWS's advances for pick 1 (they would've drafted Trac). GWS were willing to trade pick 4 & 7. Paddy may well have been there at 4 anyway (but unlikely) but reckon we would've had a good shot at de goey..and 2-m poita

I remember being excited as the general consensus had us picking up petrecca.
Then when we grabbed paddy I thought “ he’s obviously a gun and must be rated as the next plugger. He ll bring the crowds thru the turnstiles and it was gonna be fun to watch etc “
Paddy was only a couple of cms taller than petrecca though so it was def a bit puzzling.
especially when you search type 1 diabetes and elite contact sports its all there -more susceptible to concussion -harder to lose weight and maintain fitness-of all the drafting mistakes we have made in my life and i am a 50 year supporter and can name most- that is the one that hurts more than any other

I don’t think that was anything more than StK supporters hoping the Giants would offer that.

There certainly wasn’t any proof that the offer existed or that we continually rejected it.

If you search type 1 diabetes & concussion most of the information is regarding how a concussion can effect the treatment of diabetes. Not the other way round.

There is some data about diabetics being more effected by a serious head trauma than non diabetics.

Paddy had only suffered one concussion during his junior career (as far as I can recall) & had recovered from it with no issue

There’s a lot if re-writing history when it comes to Paddy but the ‘he’s a diabetic, don’t draft him’ is right up there with ‘he should have been a 2nd round pick’ garbage. We thought we had drafted the next Jonathan Brown… his junior career suggested thats the type of player he was growing into.

It was horrible luck, the kid had the talent to be a 200 game player…

12 months later we rookie Roma & he’s a jet. Pick him in from of Petracca & no one is complaining.

Swings and roundabouts.

Swings and round about but unless we put together a finals ready dominant side instead of watching all our misses dominate, this will keep going on. The problem is still that the hits are rarer than misses and so the list is still a work in progress after 9 years in the wilderness. We look a lot better placed than we were then though so that's a positive.

We had probably the worst drafting of any side in the post competitive balance era. Pretty much 2002 until 2018 we drafted way below the industry standard. We just have to own it and move forward. Hopefully Libba is the man that takes us forward but I hope that if he doesn't nail high picks we move him on quickly this time. We can't have another 10 years test driving key appointments that can't do their job to a high enough standard.
