Well I stand corrected!

Stand by for a day of Pelican posts now!

I also recall reading a long form retrospective article which walked through the painful minutia including Richo's 'captain's call' on Paddy. The main argument that won the day was the Boyd $1m x 7 and high draft capital trade it would take to get in a key forward if we didn't take one now. The comment was "let's draft him at no. 1 and get him to fall in love with the place". I'll try and hunt it down and post later.

Check out Emma Quayle’s book.

It wasn’t Cho’s call… Trout loved Paddy after Petracca’s interviews were less than impressive.

I seem to remember suggestions that Richo knew the Petraccas so didn't want to influence the decision too. Trout might as well have been an Essendon funded double agent with the list carnage that we suffered.

The Trout thought he was pretty deadly too

This mccartin/petracca talk is making me straight depressed. Can someone make up a rumour or something instead? It was 7 years ago, let's agree that it was dangerously incompetent drafting and move on.
Heard with pick nine we will take the highest ranked diabetic on our list.

In all seriousness we need to move on and just get future picks spot on.

FWIW, the 2014 proposed trade with GWS was going to be picks 4 & 7 for picks 1 & 20. GWS were never seriously considering the deal without pick 20 involved. But they certainly wanted Petracca badly

I've said this a few times, but there was a video floating around which showed Richo and someone else (Finnis? Was he already there?) coming into a room and speaking to Trout, saying "are you sure about this? we absolutely have to get this right". Trout was sitting there brimming with confidence and was espousing the qualities of Paddy, talking about coming from a good football family, great kid, couldn't be more certain etc etc etc.

It was definitely not a captains call, or Richo's call at all from what I saw on that video.

I don't think size is an issue at all in our midfield.

Steele, Crouch, Bytel all big bodied mids and hopefully another off season in the gym and Clark can work on those spagghetti arms as well.

We really need a bit more class in there IMO, someone that can cover the ground like Walsh and Merrett etc.

If they happen to have a bit of size well that's just an added bonus I guess.
We need class and pace. I hope we'll be pushing Byrnes, Clark and Coff through there as much as possible. We have enough coverage in the backline to make the change.

If Petracca interviewed poorly, it may be in part because he didn't want to come to St Kilda.

If that is true, in what plane of reality would Petracca have become a good player for us?

As always, the "what if" draft talk always ignores development.

IMO Geelong and Sydney don't draft diamonds in the rough - they'll develop almost anyone to be good AFL players.

I think he was over confident and a bit of a flog, nothing serious. We still had our no dickheads policy and didn't like self confidence or arrogance. Unfortunately the wrote off a lot of young guys at the top end of drafts.

Funny thing is we drafted Gresham and traded for Carlisle the very next year. Carlisle a bit of a twit at times, and while Gresham is no d---head, he had plenty of confidence from the word go.

I read at the time that Petracca basically begged us to take him at no 1 and said he wouldn't let us down.

I don't see Coff being able to make that transition unfortunately. Just seems to lack the ability to win contested footy and looks a bit fumbly when the ball is in tight.

Clark needs to have a big pre season and show the coaches he's desperate to get in there. He's wasted off a back flank and has the ability to be an a grade mid.

Byrnes a like too but we really need more top end talent in there.

Swings and round about but unless we put together a finals ready dominant side instead of watching all our misses dominate, this will keep going on. The problem is still that the hits are rarer than misses and so the list is still a work in progress after 9 years in the wilderness. We look a lot better placed than we were then though so that's a positive.

We had probably the worst drafting of any side in the post competitive balance era. Pretty much 2002 until 2018 we drafted way below the industry standard. We just have to own it and move forward. Hopefully Libba is the man that takes us forward but I hope that if he doesn't nail high picks we move him on quickly this time. We can't have another 10 years test driving key appointments that can't do their job to a high enough standard.

We built a list from 2000-2004 that competed right up until 2011. We then had to try and rebuild through heavily compromised draft. Along the journey we haven't had one Academy or Father son gift to kick us along.

Our biggest issue is drafting & development - its been horrific for a decade

Biggest indicator of that is our current #1 midfield rotation - Steele, Crouch, Jones - all players poached from other clubs

I dont think there is another club in the league who's best midfield 3 are all players from other clubs

Very much hoping the tide has turned with the likes of Gresham, Clark, potentially even Coffield being able to go through there. Coffield is the interesting one for mine - his under 18 year had him rolling from half back & into the midfield - he had some epic head to head battles with Cam Rayner in the guts & would just about break even. Hope we could bring that edge back into his game

As for trades this year, I'd be looking at potentially giving Robbie Tarrant a deal if he's not getting one at North - feel he's a safer defensive backup than Talia even though he's older.

Narkle & Constable are interesting ones. I'd say yes to both, but only take Constable if both Ross & Dunstan leave. Narkle could potentially play half forward, wing & roll through the middle as well, ideally in a Shai Bolton-type role

Well that's just garbage right there. In fact its a myth.

It's just a hunch, but l see similar in Coff's issues to the Mk1 Dmac issues and l think the same remedy could work well. "Go out and play attacking footy" to free his mind.
That's what he was allowed to do in 2020.

He doesn't do well as an accountable defender and with Pato and Jimmy (and Wilkie) both available its a clear opportunity to push Coff up the ground and utilize his strengths.

Ryan Gamble, Charlie Gardiner.
Daniel Menzel. Billy Smedts , Darcy Lang, Fogarty

Clutching at straws to say that Petracca didn't want to come to StKilda.
