My worries are as follows:

Clark doesn't have the drive to become an elite player

Fair Enough

Coff is a straight up bust and never gets back to the promise of 2020

lol wat?

Gresh is another ruined by injury story

has had injuries but why ruined? He needs a lot of work after the achilles injury but a bit extreme

Allison was a complete whiff with a technical first round pick

Come on mate pick 26, and is 19, cut the kid a bit of slack.

Hill cost us a chance at a Serong type

yeah fair enough, but it was one part of a bunch of moving part that changed pick 6 and 59 and a couple of future picks into 5 first 22 players, so I look at the big picture

Don't mind the other trades that much considering they were targeted needs but that feeling of lacking any real top line talent besides King and Steele was only exacerbated by Melbourne's performance on GF day.

Yes I have the same feeling, we are all getting impatient and looking like hitting the draft will have us cooling our heels in 2022, then taking Bing.

It is a big risk if the young ones don't come on next year.

Don't mean to put you under the pump, who have we missed with our drafts comparable to the McCartin/ Petracca debacle? Still reckon Billings wasn't a mistake, just a good pick by the Bulldogs.

Clark
Coffield
King
Gresham

have been our top picks

Howard
Butler
Jones
Ryder
Higgins
Crouch

All were good recruits.

Hill can be argued that he cost too much for his output and that is fair enough

Then we have speculators
Sharman
Wilkie
Highmore
Byrnes
Connelly

I thnk we have not made any McCartin mistakes.

If Suns had taken both Kings, I would have gone Bailey Smith @ 4, but we can hardly say King is a bust.

In 6 years if we haven't won a flag, like ever team, we would all be saying we didn't do this or that, but that is the nature of football.

Not a heap of mistakes lately but we have had to build the list in 3 years after replacing 3/4 of the list. It cost draft and trade capital to do it. We have paid up big for players you usually would have picked late and developed yourself. So far only King and really early but Sharman are looking like heading on an elite path. Marshall as well actually.

Clark, Coffield and Gresham are all getting to make or break point. They are on the cusp of stepping up or staying GOPs. If that happens we are in for a world of pain with little top end kids coming through. Bytel and Byrnes are the only kids that have some real top end potential but they were speculative picks and would have to defy history to become elite. If they do we've done really well.

We haven't followed a usual path of drafting kids then decorating the tree with some tinsel. We bought the tinsel and are now poking branches into it hoping that we can fill it in.

Essendon is probably the closest model to that in recent times and they have stepped back to the draft. Sides with one elite player rarely win premierships so we'd have to get a few tipping into that from the current group and new recruits to really step up to get to Melbourne level.

So he left the Saints, because he was not happy that he might be playing VFL.
And....now he's behind Oliver, Petracca, Viney etc.
OK Luke, whatever floats your boat.
Dunstan got healthy Brownlow votes due to a handful of very good games, yet we had quite a few players who didn't get votes, and it shows me we had too many under-performers this season..too much inconsistency which is why we lost games that we were pencilled in to win, and in the end cost us a finals berth. We do need top get more class in the midfield for a start.

All fair points and I'm not saying I think these things are the truth, but the pessimistic, beaten down St Kilda fan in me keeps whispering in my ear that it's what will happen.

I don't think I could love the nickname 'spook' more. Would love to hear the reasons/story behind it if anyone can shed some light lol Can only assume he's a bit of a creep with women or hangs out in the smoker's asking randoms for smokes

It rhymes

What’s a lucky miss?

Ameetos played it beautifully.

You can’t give the club any credit at all can you?

Have a look at what they gave up compared to what we did for Hill.

What did he do? Sold our picks off to the Hawks. I reckon it was insane still when we needed to get players in and develop them, it was a misread as to how good our list was. It got us Battle and Long who are probably not going to be on the list in a couple of seasons and Clark who may have been there at the Coffield pick any way.

We chased O'Meara too but he rejected us. I wish they'd just act like a normal club and not do stupid speculative stuff. Realistically Ameet was part of the Trout era of drafting where in a few years there will be hardly a player left off that list. It was probably the worst period of drafting/trading in the professional era for any club. He was the most overhyped administrator we have ever had.

We love our saviours and even defend them when there was no evidence that they were any good.

I just always assumed it was because he looked spooky.
Like nosferatu.

Reigning premier with a stacked midfield picking up Dunstan, he must be sh*t.

Melts are going to be elite if he plays finals next year.
Would hope most people are a bit prouder of themselves than that... Luke was an okay player for 6 or 7 seasons. This year was the main year of improvement but I believe the horse had already bolted. We also have a few players with a similar skill set and similar deficiencies. There were clearly internal issues as well. I don't see a spot for him in our side, he's had 8 years. If his skill set can improve or complement another side, even if they're in the finals, godspeed to him.

The bolded part if getting into "all-time overblown hyperbole" range. Brisbane at the end of 2009, Fremantle's entire first decade, Melbourne 2007-2012, Carlton mid 2010s... easy to think of worse periods than this one.

Not to return the exhausting - life sapping really - debate on whither Xerri, can I be the first to ask those who know:

What is the geographical origin of his exotic surname and how is it pronounced?

Sherry?
Cherry?
Jerry?
Serry?
Kserry?
Erry?

Just call him Billy....all great ruckman are called Billy

Agree we don't have top end superstars, however I find it interesting that Gresham 24, Clark 22, and Coffield 22 are approaching make or break, but you you wanted to keep Dunstan who was 26 after a couple of good games. Why does he get 4 more years than Clark and Coff and 2 more than Gres?

I would say Byrnes, Bytel, Connelly, Sharman, Highmore, Butler, and Higgins all have lots of upside especially if we use the Luke Dunstan rule.

I always thought it was just cos it rhymes with Luke

Spooky Luke

It’s a really smart pick up by melb.
Looking to go back to back,
An injury to Oliver or even viney could have proven catastrophic to their hopes.
Now spook could slot right in for either of those 2, obv a downgrade on Oliver but allows them to stick to their system/gameplan without hassle should the situation arise.

Given how many are on basic 2 year contracts, a 2 year contract at a higher $'s will be enough for Top 70%

The bands are as follows:

- Top five per cent = first-round pick

- Top 15 per cent = end-of-first-round pick

- Top 30 per cent = second-round pick

- Top 50 per cent = end-of-second-round pick

- Top 70 per cent = third-round pick
The 3rd rounder would be great, but will Melbourne be paying him above the minimum contract?

What's the average AFL salary?

It's based on average for that year right?

So if I have a 5 year deal on 200k a year then it's the same as a 1 year deal on 200k?

Or do they look at total?

Sinclair not one Brownlow vote, King 3 Brownlow votes. Dunstan must be infinitely better than both going off Brownlow votes

Was a pretty good draft/trade season.
We used the following year's 2nd round pick to bring in a ready to go young mid - Jack Steele.

The Hawks trade was for our first and 4th, we got the Coffield pick plus a second and third.
The best we probably could have hoped for would have been Florent or Venables.
Instead we ended up with all of Coffield , Long , and Battle.

I still think Long was an odd choice, but that reflects our recruiters rather than the deal done with the Hawks, which was very favourable to us.
God knows why we didn't choose Bolton.

A heart warming reunion with Richo. Couldn't get Cerra so they settle for Dunstan.
Good luck to Luke.
Not sure how he’s not going to be just depth there though.
