Also even before the salary cap was cut how often do you see a team bring in a Neale and Daniher caliber of player within two years of each other, and a significant pay rise to Cameron, and the re-signing of Rayner to a new and improved contract. Add that to a lot of our key players being young stars that would need contract upgrades and I think we’ve done pretty well to not end up like GWS having to offload a really quality player every couple years.

We've done it a lot over the years so no if we have to do it that way no biggie. Probably makes no difference ultimately. Seems likely Joyce and B. Smith are ear marked for the Archie and Birchall spots considering we haven't delisted them. I imagine we'll move CEY there too if Ballenden is delisted though we might be aiming to keep Ballenden for another year and maybe trade Ely or something if there's a suitor.

Don't think so. We've signed players on the rookie list to longer than one year deals in the past (Madden comes to mind).

Last year's rule was you can do it automatically, without the player passing through any draft.

Before that they had to pass through the national draft and pre-season draft and any rookie picks before yours.

This year they have to pass through the national draft and then can be prelisted on to your rookie list.

So you can still do what we've done in the past (move players to the rookie list) with less hassle than previously, and you can still use the mechanism to open up national draft spots (delist and then relist), but it's back to at least risking that someone might poach them in the national draft.

We do not. We've signed plenty of players to multi-year rookie contracts (Irish boys especially, Oscar got a two year contract covering his third rookie year and first senior year, etc), and we've also moved players with multiple years on their contract to the rookie list.

Yeah, ignore that. I dunno why but I had it in my head that Matho moved onto the rookie list in 2019 and a two year contract would have put us in a hairy place but I'm just dumb. He only got moved there last year.

Having said that, if you think about the type of player who gets moved on to the rookie list they tend to be a candidate for delisting in future years (otherwise why move them in the first point). Often they're players who have been offered around for trade and have had zero bites - otherwise they'd be at a new club, with that club picking up the tab instead of the rookie list providing minor relief. There's not exactly a huge queue lining up to poach them. Some are also actually retired, and end up on the rookie list for cap purposes (Patfull for example).

There have been a few examples where clubs have done it to long-standing players (St Kilda did it at least once) who then threatened to retire if any other club picked them up.

We might have put it out there but not got the value we desired. It'll be traded out eventually but it might be next year when we have a better idea of what we need for our three F/S + academy player/s. I would have liked three players from this year's first round though I can't say I've seen enough of the players I like to even warrant that desire.

Depends if Ceglar want's to move interstate for what would be the same money. Will be number one ruck at the Bulldogs, won't be at the Lions. He'll share the role with Big O.

I was watching the fox trading show last night. John Ralph was talking in general about how clubs are tight & it's hard to get trades done this year, said quite emphatically that the Lions are desperate to get an experienced player through the door but only have $150,000 to play with (I'd be staggered if he actually knows the cap space we have).

That led Dicko to say that he'd love to see Gunston at the Lions thinks he'd be great fit alongside Daniher.

Wondering if it all has started from that? Haven't seen any other mention of us being into Gunstan.

I like Gunsten and think he may well make us a better team, but don't see extra options up forward really being a strong need for us.

Risk mitigation is probably a greater need and I doubt Gunstin can play ruck full time if Big O goes down.

Fremantle bending Suns over once again. How on earth is this even remotely fair?

FREMANTLE has secured former No.9 pick Will Brodie and a swag of picks from Gold Coast.

As revealed by AFL.com.au on Wednesday, the Dockers have received Brodie, a second-round pick (currently No.19) and two fourth-round picks (currently No.61 and No.69), while the Suns get a future second-round selection and a future fourth-round selection.

The deal will also see the Dockers absorb the midfielder's 2022 contract.
