Western Derby 52: Fremantle Dockers defender Luke Ryan appears sore, spends time away from main training group

Yet another defender appears in doubt for Fremantle ahead of Sunday’s western derby.

All-Australian Luke Ryan started the session with the rest of his teammates at Cockburn before going off for treatment on the sidelines.

Ryan returned to the track, under the watchful eye of club medical staff, but looked far from 100 per cent.

He appeared to be troubled by a right knee issue and spent the next 10 minutes away from the main group, doing zig-zag running and jumping before going back inside.
The reigning Doig medallist will be crucial to the Dockers’ hopes of arresting a 10-game losing streak against cross-town rivals West Coast.

It comes as tall defender Brennan Cox wasn’t sighted on the track after an ankle injury in Saturday night’s win over North Melbourne at Optus Stadium.

Fellow key backs Alex Pearce (knee) and Joel Hamling (ankle) are both sidelined for the derby but could return in the coming fortnight.

Rookie key forward Josh Treacy was on light duties in another worrying sign.

Treacy started the session chatting with assistant coach Josh Carr and kicking to himself before completing some set shots with David Mundy and Matt Taberner.

Treacy has managed just one behind in his three AFL appearances so far, but all have been Dockers wins.

Well that wasn’t positive at all.

Dr Peter Larkins was interviewed this morning and was chatting about the spate of syndesmosis injuries. Seemed to think it was tied to the clubs training to tackle players to the ground (and landing awkwardly on them) more so than in the past. Likely a response to so few HTB calls on players still standing by the umps who seem to let them drop the ball to the ground for play on.
