2021 What went right, What went wrong?

How quickly people forget that Alir Alir was there for the taking and we chose not to.
Would Allir Allir even chosen us over Port Adelaide? (even if we were interested)

Players and player managers are not stupid, our list is in the worst position of the competition by a long way and there is consensus about that in the industry, only bias hawks fans think otherwise. The worst thing is it still hasn't hit rock bottom yet and the club is still in denial and not willing to accept reality.

As a wise man (Chief Wiggum) once said, this is going to get worse before it gets better.

At the moment no but yes very soon because at least they have accepted where they are at and have bottomed out, we are still to do that.

We've absolutely accepted it. But it takes more than 1 draft year. North have thrown their eggs into a draft basket that didn't get exposed form for 12 months. We have added Day, Finn, DGB, Downie, Brockman and Smitchell in the last 2 drafts and go into this seasons (strong) pool with currently 3 picks inside the top 25.

That also hasn't taken into account continuity and strong performances from young players like Moore, CJ, Kosi and Scrimshaw just to name a few.

What's going right:
Kossie is becoming the next key forward we are looking for. Presents well, works hard, marks the thing inside 50, and converts.
Jeka has showed signs in the level below he's potentially capable as well (obviously only played 1 game)
CJ has shown a level of improvement that was unexpected. Been superb.
Scrimshaw stringing games together.
Moore showing a bit, and kicking goals.
Hardwick is improving as a leader

What's not going right:
Injuries to Day and DGB. Day was in good form again, whilst it would be great getting games into DGB and watching him develop.
Midfield, other than O'Meara, has regularly been beaten in close. Worpel has been struggling, as has Shiels. Mitchell leads from the front, but needs support which we haven't had enough of.
Inability to stop a run of goals
Inability to play anything other than 3 qtrs.

Scrimshaw has like 30 kicks and he IS perhaps the best kick we have available. But he refused to use he's 60-70m kick so he was terrible. Do I blame him or do I blame Clarko? Dunno but the kid can kick but is NOT allowed to. I'll be honest I blame Clarko.

Right:

CJ coming on quicker than I expected.
Kosi has been a revelation as a forward.
Jeka is a very exciting prospect if he can stay on this trajectory.
Day was excellent before he got injured.
Brockman showing he can hit the scoreboard.
Beating Essendon.
Competitive against some of the contenders.
Reeves coming along nicely based on his Box Hill form
Morrison and Worpel doing ok
Impey getting back to his pre-injury form

Wrong:

General skill level.
Setup at stoppages.
Dumb decision making in 50-50 ground-ball situations on the wing and half-back flank.

Personnel wise, I'm surprised with what Kosi, Jeka and Reeves are all showing so far.
Key forwards are gold and Reeves was essentially taken on as a project player.

What we're lacking are young up-and-coming half-forwards and wings.
We need about 3 Ricky Henderson (on a good day) attacking outside-mid-flanker types who can run-and-carry, take contested overhead marks on the lead and kick goals from 55m. ( Day and Downie might be the answer down the track for the wing positions )

I'd be interested to see the stats on long vs short kicks.

Not sure what the numbers would say but it feels like we'd be right up there for long kicks, especially when entering Forward 50m.

We need to not be kicking long entering Forward 50m. We're s**t at it. Have been for 5+ years.

person accepted new position elsewhere and still here.
Interfering in decisions for future when won't even be here in the future.
Indecisive by senior management.
Has lost playing group and created big problems with all departments.

What would be right.

Leave now and wait for your new position elsewhere and let us work things out, without U here. You are f***ING us so pee off.

Only one of our seven selections in the national draft over the last two years played against Gold Coast. One!

It’s getting to the point now where we have literally nothing to lose by playing Downie and Brockman. It’s not like there’s tough competition for spots in the midfield and forward-line. They’re better off playing games at AFL level then in the VFL.

2019
Day (injured)
Maginness (available)
Morris

2020
Grainger-Barras (injured)
Mitchell (injured)
Downie (available)
Brockman (available)

I'm almost starting to agree with this.

Where Essendon and Port Adelaide seemingly went right in their past 2 rebuilds was exposing those kids early. Butters, Duursma and Rozee all played round 1 the following year after being drafted. Cox and Perkins are playing every week for Essendon. All put in poor performances at times due to being young, but that happens.

Does anyone know why we keep bombing ball? Even out of our defence, and same with forward. Noone lowers eyes and look for target.

No seperation in fwd 50 is also big issue when we don't have anyone who can mark.

So we’re going to make the old mistake from the 90’s. Incestuous coaching appointments made on the arrogance of thinking only our brand breeds success.

Schwab, Judge, Knights.....Mitchell. Our best two coaches post Kennedy were imports. Instead let’s go back to that awesome formula from the 90’s and 00’s. External coach please.
