Our version of the Hawthorn threepeat taking advantage of expansion slowing the progression of the weaker clubs
Care Factor!
Melbournes Premiership last year was no different.

Gees, not defending Nathan Barley here, but he didn’t say 5 “top players”. He said 5 players.

Now I don’t know if he meant all 5 from the best 22 or not.

It’s possible we lose 2 or 3 players from just outside our best 22, and maybe 1 or 2 best 22 players.

I believe we could lose 2 or 3 starters, and it not affect us significantly. But losing one of our best key forwards or top inside mids would have a big impact.

Until the AFL puts a dollar figure on that secondary relocation payment, we have no idea what some of our players might be being offered.

$50k to move, plus a 3 or 4 year tier one contract is not something to sneeze at. Especially as Sydney has 5 of those to hand out.

Get the right 5 players to commit and Sydney go from competition easy beats, to a genuine finals chance.

Port have been offered the ability to sign a 17 year old a year early. That didn’t twig your spidey senses why only Port were offered that?

Quoting the number 1 AFLW draft watcher.

The AFL are putting in place the levers for the weaker clubs to improve, while bringing the stronger clubs back to the pack.

I mentioned 5 top players bcos that's who'll be targeted. The lower orders are not going to try & lure players who haven't proven their worth. So if we were to lose the full 5, most of those players are going to be around our top players.

Which we cannot afford to lose bcos who have we got that can cover those players?

Our top 5 players are probably the ones paid the best and least likely to leave

Grider, Bates and Orla were the ones targeted the hardest last season and all stayed

We've also seen with recent expansions with the exception of Ablett the ones moving clubs usually have a personal reason, are undervalued or simply not worth the big bucks

My original question was in answer to the idea that we could afford to lose players and my answer was who? Who could we lose and have a ready replacement for, who would be as good or better than, the player lost?

Still no satisfactory answer. It's OK if you don't know. But my question still stands.

I'm not saying we will be as good a team if we lost 5 players. **** me

We had a list that was so far better than 14 other clubs it was ridiculous. We will be brought back to the pack but we'll have the replacements to still have the list to get us deep into the finals

🤦

Still havent answered the question, 'who could we afford to lose?' Bates? Anderson? Hickie? Grider? Lutkins? Campbell? Dawes? C Svarc? Wardlaw? Dax? And who do we have on our list to easily replace them?

Just......Never mind.

I did and my answer was we can't easily replace them but that we would still be a good team

And I don't think we will be bcos losing more than one star player is going to render us ordinary. Happy to be proven wrong though :)

It's not clear in that article but I assume it still only applies to uncontracted players.
No AFLW player is contracted for the 2023 season yet.

Last year the league told clubs that they can make informal deals/commitments beyond 2022 with players if desired, but nothing in the way of a binding multi-year Standard Playing Agreement would be able to be signed until the next trade period (i.e. the one that's due to commence a few days from now).

If we lose bodey, bates , svarc, wardlaw with very little coming through our academy and all qld girls how is that fair

We just lost most of our midfield and forward line

With limited knowledge of the AFLW this seems absolutely ridiculous.

What’s the point of developing talent if you can be rubbish and just decimate the top clubs?

All the players were on yearly contracts, so they were free agents continuously. I think that is the process of being phased out..

I don't begrudge any of the players from trying to earn a better wage. It does smart a bit though when we've lost so many players over the course. But I take these things with a grain of salt. All it's really saying is they're being chased. As much as I like Bodey, we can probably cover her loss.

But no point getting into a tizzy just because Hawthorn leaked who they are chasing.

I expect we’ll lose 4 or 5 girls (we can lose a maximum of 5 players to the most recent expansion teams).

Clubs can sign two marquee players outside the AFLW salary structure, so players like Wardlaw and Bates can be offered significant six figure salaries.

We have some depth beyond our best 22, where we could theoretically cover the loss of a small forward, wing, or secondary mid.

But losing any of our top players is going to hurt us a lot.

Our academy doesn’t appear to be producing the quality or quantity of juniors that Gold Coast’s has been.

So we may struggle to replace any lost players in the short term.

Yes, I believe I already raised this point about how do we cover depth if we were to lose 5 of our best players. I was told that I clearly didn't have any confidence in our list and that we'd still be a great team....

Sucks.

The Hawks can go and get ****ed! Getting repeatedly done over bcos other clubs can't be bothered developing their own talent. We're being treated like a player atm. AFL won't be happy until we're bog ordinary like a good little non Vic team should be. Getting punished for having a good eye for talent.
