The physical attributes of Mattaes are there for all to see. I will be stunned if his “character” is a red flag.

He is son of Sam and Grandson of Peter. They are both highly intelligent and as focussed as anyone I have ever met (but great guys when you get to know them).

Mattaes completed quite a bit of year 12 last year (as a 16 year old) so he could devote more attention to getting drafted this year = very intelligent and very focussed.

If having a laser focus on being successful is a red flag then the AFC is being a bit precious. Is it possible that we will trade up on draft night if the price is right?

If he slips to pick 10+ then using next years first rounder on Rankine and pick 6 on Phillipou would have been over paying. I know I’m an optimist but perhaps we have a plan (and appearing disinterested in Matteus is part of the plan 🙄).

Reid can play anywhere , he would start at half back just like Daicos did

Harley Reid is a freak, with Hawthorn's firesale I think their supporters believe they are in pole position for the spoon next year.

Re Cadman - they Obvs don’t rate him close to the top 3 on their list and that’s ok

We rate Cadman highly, according to Rawlings, we just didn't have a strong preference out of the top 4 or so players, we were happy with any 2 of the top 4 so we were okay with going from 1 to 3.

They must be waiting for a v special key forward ( in their eyes ) to pull trigger and realise they’ll have more chances

I think Cadman is more a half-forward prospect. We have Larkey who I think will be a solid 2nd forward, we really need a good full forward prospect. We have Edwards and CCJ who are ruck/half-forwards, I think it would create structural problems going forward unless Clarkson has a radically different outlook.

Next year someone like Archer Reid should be someone we go after, he was 201cm at 16 years old, fast on the lead, good hands, accurate kick, good below his knees. Next year seems to have some really good forward prospects.

I'd be happy to take both Cadman this year and Archer Reid next year but my general philosophy is to not take KPP with very early first round picks, I'd rather put top end class around the ball and have lesser calibre KPP/Ruckmen. I think it makes sense to go for early KPP if you have had a mountain of very early picks and you have assembled the midfield talent already.

I would go with Wardlaw, Sheezel and Cadman in that order and in the future we would have Wardlaw, Phillips and LDU as the core mids with Sheezel and Thomas on the wing. Wardlaw is a complete animal, if GWS don't take him it is because they would fear he is a flight risk. I'd be pretty happy with Cadman if GWS took Wardlaw, we will have to see how it pans out.

In meantime having Sheezel at half forward and Reid at half back will help

They prob think they’re getting a top 5 priority pick next year too

As much as it sounds appealing, I hope we do not. I think early development years are critical, if you spend too much time learning how to lose and having poor standards I think it handicaps you from reaching your potential.

History would show in terms of trade value to clubs, Pick 5 is round figures the equivalent of 8 and say 12.
Wow, that is a very dumb thing to say.

1. West coast just traded pick 2 for 8 and 12. Obviously pick 5 is not worth the same as pick 2.

2. Even if your statement was true, it is irrelevant to what to my point. Adelaide will have an early-mid 1st rd pick, will not have a 1st at all.

So where's Charlie Comben at?

He looked an absolute ripper key forward prospect in his draft year.

The only scenario that in my mind justifies spending Pick 5 on Rankine if we WERE interested in Phillips is where, come draft night, we didn't want a situation where Pick 6 arrives and Phillipou is already off the board. We're left with a Pick in the range of several Vic Metro/Geelong Falcons prospects, and are no guarantee to be able to trade back into 2023 if we needed to. I understand clubs generally pick for 'best available' in the first round, but we're probably far enough into our rebuild to be targeting specific list needs, which we've seen clubs do more recently at the higher end of the draft.

Continually injured .....had a horror run has Comben .....good prospect though

He has been injured for the vast majority of his time on the list, just seems cursed. He is also still underweight, his official weight is 84kg and he was taken in the 2019 draft, same issue currently with Edwards, 202cm and 85kg, they physically aren't AFL standard and not sure why they haven't been put on a bulking up regime. If it was up to me, no KPP would get a game unless they were 95-100kg when you are 2m tall.

Hopefully Clarkson/Viney start to address the anorexic look of our list. I can't imagine that would fly under their watch.

I'll summarise

There were purported red flags, I said the crows are very much in to him.

I'd be interested to hear about how many meetings there have been between the parties, where the meetings have been and what the general consensus has been.

No doubt he's confident and driven, if they are red flags then it's not really a surprise we are where we are.

The Crows traded out of this draft, doesn’t sound like they’re all that into him

I thought he made it quite clear Rankine was always the club's number 1 priority earlier in the thread. Reports seem to suggest we had been putting work into Rankine from a fair way out.

Volbeats source, the one you don’t think sits in the draft room (hilarious btw, as I know who it is), was saying last year that the club was still crazy hot on Rankine and cold on Luko.

I thought unlikely as Rankine was playing reserves at the time

It’s ITK vs ITK
Maybe his source is Hamish himself in which case we can all agree that his source is good, but also bad.

It could be Hamish, but even then he’s long stopped giving out any good information. I mean years since anything verifiable

It would also be strange as TAFKATMS made his name years ago, mostly with good tips on selection on the Wednesday

You can have a source but they also have to be telling you the truth about interesting stuff

A bit more than tips on a Wednesday, but whatever.

Struggling to find any of Volbeat's info except a Frampton trade. I am however not on this site much so apologies if he's broken some big news.

Is what it is. Crows have met with him numerous times and have been very impressed, my only issue was that the statement that there were red flags.

I know I wouldn't be having 4+ meetings, giving a tour of the club and be in regular touch with a player that has such concerning red flags.

Yes, said that numerous times. Also said they are putting some work into him now in the likely event that he does move interstate then want to return

Surely you can concede it doesn't make much sense?

Also laughable hearing people say we were wedded to Rankine at Pick 5 as opposed to a future 1st. Surely if we were THAT into Phillipou we would have showed some flexibility in our thinking when trading for Rankine. It's bizarre.

IMO we're either not into Phillipou, or
We've gifted GC their ideal trade scenario with Rankine and we've burned our opportunity to get Phillipou this year. = Bad list/trade management
Bringing in our future 1st and another valuable draft pick to get back into the draft this year = Bad list/trade management

Sure, but 'putting work into him' doesn't mean you throw every other trade scenario out the window in your mission to get him.

In an era where it's becoming more and more accepted that a player moves home for money/family/whatever, it certainly makes a lot of sense to be going through that rigmarole for a highly talented SA player, even if they're out of reach come draft night.

I think it's rather safe to say we preferred to have our 1st in 2023 then Phillipou at this point, but that doesn't mean we're not doing the groundwork to lure him at the end of his first contract.

Maybe. But our verifiable actions suggest we’re not all that fussed

We much preferred to stay in next years draft
