Phillips is getting delisted by Hawthorn. Buyer beware.

That's why he's worth a look - costs nothing, mature depth. List management isn't just about getting elite players, need to balance that with having the right types in the ressies who can play the required role. Phillips on a 1 year deal with triggers for a second, low salary, no draft outlay. I'd absolutely take him if Acres doesn't pan out (ie. Freo up their offer or want too much at the trade table). I'd still consider him even if we get Acres (subject to seeing who else is cut).

I sense a starship in our future.

Acres tick.

Get Jack Martin's and Josh Honey's fitness up over the summer and all the forwards need is for a SOS or another marking target to bring it.

I watched Acres pretty closely for the first time this year on Saturday night, and he'll be an upgrade on anyone we have playing on the wing at the moment. Just does the basics right.

Agree with what you say - trade for needs and draft best available.

If he can hit Motlop with a handball from 5 metres away rather than at Motlop’s shoe laces - then he’s an upgrade on Newnes already. :thumbsu:

Sholl would help address the first, both in the short and longer term given his age. If we go that route, I'd also be happy to add one or both of Acres/Phillips depending on cost. Go from Cottrell and LOB on the wings, to Acres and Sholl, with Phillips/Cottrell and LOB as the depth for each wing.

Leaves our first pick to address the midfield pace issue - find the Bailey Smith type who will tuck the ball under his arm, gain 20m of territory and then kick long to a forward's advantage. Bailey Humphrey reminds me quite a bit of Smith, a bit shorter on endurance though so he's maybe more of a burst mid than a permanent one. Next closest options around our pick would be Hewett or Mackenzie I think. Whoever we take here I'd hope we have a plan to integrate them into the seniors sooner rather than later though - someone with a bit of forward craft would be ideal so they can rotate off a forward flank.

Or we look at a tall, though I'll die on the hill of taking a late prospect tall rather than using an early pick.

Trade for wings, first pick on a quick contested mid type who can kick to a forward's advantage while on the run, later picks on best available with an eye out for an aggressive raw tall who can develop their craft in the ressies.

Kellar was rated at 29 in the last draft rankings, I don’t watch junior footy so have no idea, but his write up sounded great. What are the chances of him still being there at that pick?

Will pick 28 come in a few places on draft night? For Brisbane to get Ashcroft and Fletcher, Essendon to get Davey and others, won’t clubs need to use multiple second round picks on these? Or would we only see movement in the later rounds?

Depends on free agency compensation that comes into play as well (e.g. Amon). Probably moves up a couple picks looking at what's potentially going to play out.

Agree - and I hope they are embraced by the playing group rather than ostracised hint to the response Stocker received from Daisy, Murph etc
Don't forget our coach himself punching on in the pool hall in his younger days.

Wiped the floor with a few nuffies

Don't know much about this kid...
If we were to split our picks 10 & 28, say with Sydney for Pick 16 & 17...

Would he be a good choice around this mark? and
Under an AFL system do you think his kicking could be fixed?

Watched the video, he sure knows how to get the pill, but his kicking is atrocious...
He would not. He plays as a goalkicking mid, not as a forward. Where Degoey has the ability to play as a full forward due to his speed on the lead and freakish goal kicking nous Humphrey is much more like a Petracca where he's a mid primarily and a forward secondary with most of his goals from stoppages or a mark on his smaller opponents. With our midfield he likely doesn't get the time needed to impact and imo we'd be better off targeting outside run and leaving the goalkicking small/mid sized fwds for next years draft.

The Stocker news should have absolutely no impact on whether or not we execute a trade. Why would it?
Just trading a top end pick for two lesser but solid picks can be risky. I was more meaning with the kemp and Philp trade. We have done so many draft trades that I got them mixed up 😂

Every trade has risk associated. Every draft selection has risk associated. Doesn't mean you don't partake in them.

What's the point of having staff at the club identifying talent if you're not going to back them in when it counts?

Very general rule, but I think you get the best value opportunities targeting:

Young players at ladder leaders (not getting a game)

Older players at bottom teams (that go full rebuild and push out vets).

Not saying we recruit him just on that, but sometimes players don't get games or are delisted based on list management approach over talent.

Do we trade 10 and 28 for 16 and 17 from swans or does the stocker news tell us to back away from there?

The lesson to be learned from the Stocker news is to draft mids who are ready to be mids and not to draft them on the hope that one day they develop the tank or whatever aspect of their game is needed to become one. It's not something that we've traditionally been good at.

Different drafts will present different opportunities. Moving up will make sense in some drafts and doing the opposite will do so in others.

Draft positionally on what a player is capable of.

Only had one good year on wing at Collingwood then got pushed to the forward (or back?) flank before being traded for peanuts (pick 65) to Hawthorn.
