WE will close that one for now and reopen after the draft.

Ive copied the last 25 posts over to keep the chat going.

I think it depends on who becomes available over the ssp (we might get some of our vfl guys to train with us over the summer) but i agree sounds like we will leave it open for msd.
Now i can see why we rejected p36 for sav (though it was a good offer) as we have zero other backup kpd thats why he was kept for 12mths

Re ssp ...If the wrong person falls over ..its insurance one would think

The question is Sav going to spen 12 month in the vfl or are they going to try to play him

If i had to guess id say sav plays maybe 5 or 6 games spends the rest of the year at FB in the 2s asks for a trade again and because he will be ooc we will get less than port offered (ie a r3 or r4) for him. That said i can see why we kept him as we have zero other kpd depth if sdk or henry are injured (other than blitz going back there which robs us elsewhere). We have easily 28-30 or so afl standard players on the list so we will rest and rotate and he will get some games but he wont be best 22 unless he kicks kolo out which is unlikely.

I think he will want to go again in 12 months unless hawk retires and neale asks to go back to freo and him and us see him as a fwd again but i think that ship has sailed (ie hes prob a defender now).

On the ssp i agree its injury cover, we have outstanding depth through mids (wow logjam there) and the fwd line and decent medium defender depth but our talls in hawk blitz stanley and cegs are old and depth is thin behind them. If cegs or stanley get injured (or blitz) and conway isnt ready then you would msd a mature ruck for 6months. Likewise if hawk gets injured (although we might just play neale and/or henry instead) or if we lose a key back and sav isnt up to it.

I thought we would look at other too but Im happy to have him. He showed good intercept ability.. honestly like his game better than Hayes... just not a KPD

Murdoch is decent and i dont mind him (like i didnt mind oscar morrison last year as a similar player) but im not sure hes a need. Hes essentially an upgrade on nick stevens (hopefully)but with zuthrie improving im not sure thats a spot we needed to fill. I would have gone phillips personally as a need and talent but obviously 18 clubs disagree with me.

You last point is the clincher ... why did 18 step over him? I still think he might get a chance injuries happen ... if he can show his capability to step in.

As for us . Hard to gauge. Perhaps they looked at him v Sav and said..it was not likely that we pick Philips in front of him

Is the tall talent that much better and accessible next year? Its funny how quickly some of the talls started to smell like a fish trawler. That Northam was not draft, Broadbent did he miss? ... the lateness of Scully and Leeney. Something really smelled up the talls this year. ..and meanwhile we take Foster.

We do seem to rate the SA talent pool.

The only position where we are short on players is KPD yet we don’t try Phillips. Sav is not a proven KPD yet, nor is Foster.

There were a number of key defenders that seemed to go well before they were ranked and before our second pick in the main draft. We may well have taken a Key defender if they had have been on the board when our pick came around. No use picking one if you do not think they can make it.

Neither is Phillips - as evidenced by the fact that 17 other clubs passed him over too.

Phillps has played senior football with some success in that position. He won a medal.

Yeah I know, and a lot of us here are still very surprised he didn't get drafted, but it appears he probably still has too many deficiencies in his game for a club to take a swing at him.

Might change in the MSD next year or even as an SSP, but we weren't the only club who didn't think he was ready - unanimous across the comp (even battlers like WC, North and Hawks weren't interested which says a lot).

You are quite right to refer to no other clubs wanting Phillips. So he must have deficiencies. As we know from Tim Kelly, Tom Atkins and Brad Close, being rejected by every Afl club can show that the experts can unanimously get it wrong.

Am I right in thinking Narkle was overlooked as well?

Read somewhere that he's more likely to get one of those trial type deals where he trains with a club during the off-season and they think about adding him to the list.

Weird line of thinking, considering Quinton's stength has never been his meticulous attention to detail with his training.

I think if we look at that draftees including Mullin, maybe Mullin, Murdoch, and Clark will be ready to play for year 1. Clark is borderline to make it, just needs more muscles this preseason for his style of play. Think Selwood was more physically developed when he arrived at the club.

Clohesy would only get a game if he's tearing it up in the magoo's, and if all of Simspon, Parfitt, Bruhn, Atkins, Clark, Willis are unavailable (*an unlikely scenario) to play the small defensive/offensive midfielder or rotation. He's more or less depth for Parfitt, O'Connor and Atkins, the defensive mids and not an age bracket coming to an end, more like going into peak years. That's a lot of depth for that position. I see Whyte more like a small defender/forward or winger, probably his most like for like player he could cover is Close.

Tbh, I still think we should draft a gun outside midfielder, we seem to be overloaded with inside types or inside/outside types. But aside Holmes who can play that role, we don't really have a bigger outside midfielder type on our list in next gen, eg for the replacement of Duncan, I Smith, Tuohy - all bigger body, hard running and good kicking types that can mark too.

Could they get Danger to play that role? Might extend his career. Or does he lack the endurance?

What an amazing trade and ND !
Only gap was not picking up a specialist KPD but Sav and Foster can learn the trade as tall backs and they’ve got a number of strong bodied/good marking third talls.

Like the utility of Foster as a ruck/fwd, back up to Neale for go home factor.

Incidentally- I couldn’t spot Welcome threads on Clohesy and Riccardi (?).

My thoughts:

Mulllin will not be ready to play but they may give him a couple of games mid to three-quarters of the way through the season. Will be great the following year.

Murdoch will play after he settles in. Maybe 3-5 games this year. Looks a solid player.

Clarke will make it. They will give him more games than the other two. Probably try to play him out of the heat a little.

We will rotate the players even more so than last year. We have plenty of depth, and they will blood more players than 2022 year.

He’d have to earn it

Don't be surprised if Jack Bowes gets a crack at outside mid.

Clohesy played a game for our VFL side this season against Box Hill. He finished with 15 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles and kicked 1.1.
That's better than Willis, Whyte and a few others that have already been in the system. Albeit they have had injuries, but pretty good for a player from the vfl system. I suspect Clohesy is a durable type, he doesn't look like a injury prone type.

Yeah, I forgot about him. Maybe he plays a bit of Wing indeed as a rotation.

Henry, DeKoning and Kolodjashnij can all play KD and they're quite young still.

Oscar Murdoch also played FB at the Falcons for a lot of the season. He plays taller than his height indicates because he's quite strong and reads the play well..

I suppose Holmes and Bowes have the physical and game style to play as gun outside midfielders, but I do see them play inside midfield quite a bit.

It's hard to tell with the Irishman though. MOC was as raw as a blue steak when he arrived and had already debuted by May.

Mullin is certainly physically prepared, all depends on how quickly he picks up the skills and team structures.

From what I've seen of him (albeit little) he looks like a slightly bigger clone of Atkins.
