Scouting Notes: 2022 WAFL Colts - Finals Week 1

Peel Thunder and South Fremantle advanced in week one of the WAFL Colts finals series. We noted some of the top performers from either win.

So if we do keep the Amon compo, let’s say mid twenties pick, who would be in the firing line?

Likewise those later speculative 50s pick?

1. Unlikely but if Brayden George slips to 25ish then I'd take him in a heartbeat. He will slip down the ranks a tad because of his ACL, but supremely talented in my opinion to still go top 15. Again, unlikely but my first choice if something weird like that happens.

2. If Hayes is traded (and we get a late 2ndish pick), then I'd use our Amon compo on Barnett. In this scenario, I'd pick Darcy Jones or Jaiden Magor with the pick we get from Hayes' trade (again, assuming late 2nd).

3. In the off chance we keep our Amon compo, dont trade Hayes and trade Rioli for a later pick, I am going for Konstanty or Charlie Clarke using the Amon Compo.

4. Speculative picks past 50 - James Van Es is the KPD I'd pick. Strong 1v1 and is the type of player we need. Obviously has some weaknesses, but I think he's ready to go and if he plays to his strengths, which is the lockdown defender role, he could be the ideal player we need. Too often, our coaching staff (and some fans) want a player to be good at everything but thats just not realistic. I'd play him as the lockdown defender and let Aliir play the intercept role which he's so good at!


My ideal off-season (although I am probably dreaming) is:

Draft: Phillipou, Barnett, Jones and James Van Es
Trade in: Rioli (not a fan but we know its gonna happen)
Trade out: Amon, Hayes (I like him but we have forced him out) and Bonner

At the end of the day, I think we need to hit the draft a have a mini-reset (yes, I know we've done it under Ken already a couple of times but we still have him so gotta do what you gotta do).

In Cal's Phantom draft, Michalanney is the highest rated SA defender; at 192cms we should select him to have some Crow fun.
Jakob Ryan at 189cms is ranked 25

Not 200cm (yet I hope) but James Van Es would be the perfect fit for us I reckon later in the draft

Website says he's 196cm and 97kg but that may have been at the start of the year?
Born Aug '04 so he may have had a growth spurt since?
Apparently a strong mark and good intercept type.
Reasonable kick.

Not sure about his agility and straight line speed, but would have to be an upgrade on Skinner on those KPI's.

Has had a strong 1st half for Vic Country. Clean disposal and does his job as a KPD. He'd be the type of player at AFL that locks down opposition talls, not the one to take intercepts like Busslinger. The reason why I want Van Es is Aliir is our intercept marker. Busslinger and Aliir may not work as well.
