List Mgmt. 2022 AFL Draft

I know this won't happen but a smart person would sit back this year and watch the large amount of movement between clubs and do beneficial trading of draft picks this year to strengthen our position for next years draft and try and make next year the same as the Rozee draft where we had 3 picks in the Top 20 and perhaps have an even stronger hand than that year.
Just draft up these big guys late. If Phillipou goes before our pick then trade out of the draft into next years. I could see us being able to swap Amon compo for a late First Round next year and if a team has a serious hardon we could get a 1st and a 2nd next year for 8.
If we could get hold of Gold Coast pick 7 we could really get something going we must have a decent amount of free cap space if we can offer between Rioli and Dunkley over $1 million

We don’t get Phillipou we do end up with Humphrey or possibly Busslinger. That's still a pretty good get.

Next year's picks this far out I'll give you Ashton Moir our 1st, Luca Slade our 2nd and Vigo Visentini our 3rd.

I have concerns about Phillipou. Only made the best players in the Champs once (and that was fifth best v Allies). Does he have a game that’s only good against smaller opposition?
A bit of Cripps/Burgmann about him, get a good character in and then develop him to a standard that will impact for greater periods. Has the athletic tools to be quality, has shown he can football, not the finished product hence going at 8ish not 1.

It looks like he beat up on crap SA u18 opposition the entire year and as soon as he came up against the big boys he was given a bit of a shock.

That doesn't necessarily mean he is overrated. You can only beat who you play. But it does raise a few questions and for me makes him a bit of a risky selection. Picking one of the Victorians - a Jhye Clark for example or even a Humphrey - would be much safer. You know what you are going to get but the potential reward is probably a lot lower.

I'd be fine if we take him. You need to take a few risks in the draft to be successful. But I don't think it is a slam dunk decision if he is available. There is a bit to weigh up.
That’s my point, just better said.

Its a hell of a gamble at #9 to take a (possibly) flat track bully with no exposed form against the better players his own age.

He reminds me so much of his Dad. And his Dad was a much better player than he's given credit for. But he was 189cm mainly playing centre half forward so was pretty much undersized.

I didn't say that. I said you can, but there is more risk than taking a player who is playing in a better competition.

Toumpas played pretty well at SANFL senior level yet was rubbish once drafted. There’s countless examples of that scenario. I guess every player is different, doing well at a higher level and playing average in a lower level doesn’t pre-determine anything.

So does that mean we can't draft another player out of SA Under 18's because its a substandard comp?
What I want to see in a player like Phillipou is good form at the U18 Nationals especially against Vic Metro, VIC Country or WA. He didn’t do that.

Next I want to see him do well at Reserves or League level. He didn’t do that either.

Doesnt mean he won’t be a star- he might. But it is a much bigger risk than someone like Jye Clarke who performed at U16 & U18 Nationals and has a good body of work in the TAC cup.

This proves nothing. There are no certainties in drafting- Ashcroft might be a flop. In drafting you play the odds.

And that’s my point. The risks are greater with Phillipou because he didn’t perform well at the nationals or SANFL open age comps.

Jhye Clark by far and away my favourite of the top class. If we don't end up with Jed Busslinger I'd love to land Clark with that top pick. A ferocious inside mid with nice neat disposal he'd be a perfect compliment to what we already have. See alot of young Joel Selwood vibes about him

My whole point is that there are no certainties, clayton oliver didnt even make the Vic u/18 side. Players can be late bloomers and still have an impact at AFL level, despite what they do in their draft year.

Phillipou could be one of these guys and i am sure the recruiters would have a better gauge on where they think he is at.

You can look like a star in a dominant team but if you are taking a beating sometimes you don't see the best in players. If we were winning games and if he was a mid/forward and not influencing games then that would be an issue.

The scouts will be looking at workrate, his hands and his decision making abilities more than quantative statistics.

I cant see Clark getting to us
Massive flight risk, such a Geelong boy , family connected thru that region , dad coaches in Geelong league , they would be in his ear every year trying to poach. Good solid professional player thou and real low risk of not playing 200, suppose we could back ourselves in , like Boak.

However I think there's others that are around the same mark with equal potential but less risk.

Put the under 17 futures scouting notes here because they’re interesting.

Duursma younger bro of X. Hopefully we can nab him next year.
Delean trained with us last pre season, so he must he on our radar too.

Draft Central doing profiles of every player invited to the draft camp and state combines between now and the draft.

Would absolutely love us to pick up Cowan.
Probably Lockie keeps him out of consideration for us but I've liked him all year.
