List Mgmt. 2022 AFL Draft

So, I’ve been doing some thinking, and I know that the rules say that they can do it, but I’m not convinced it’s the best thing for the competition (in saying that, Geelong did get two generational talents for chicken feed under the old system)

so…. Norths bid on Ashcroft at pick two. That’s 2517 points or 2013 points in picks that Brisbane has to cover (After the first round discount is applied). It means that Brisbane pick 38 becomes pick 73 (but then lifted to 70) and the rest of the picks evaporated (that‘s all from fox footy)

Then let’s say, a bid on Fletcher comes at pick 11 (a little high, but run with it). That’s 1063 points after the discount is applied. So Brisbanes 2022 pick 73 goes, meaning they go into deficit to the tune of about 1046 points. Which is about the same as pick 17.

Now, Brisbane has traded their 2023 first round pick. Going off ladder positions this year, that leaves them with roughly picks 24, 41, 51, 62, 63, 87 (according to zero hanger - other draft pick shuffling happened during the trade period). This is 1604 points. Which means that pick 24 goes and pick 41 becomes about pick 61.

My understanding is that the rules allow this to happen, but I am not convinced that it is fair. The draft is becoming more and more compromised, to the point it no longer serves as the tool to even out the competition. Brisbane has been not been able to bring in two top line talents, but also trade for Dunkley and bring Gunston in for the cost of McStay (Not to mention the dodgy Free Agency re-contract for Daniher). Smart operating, but how are lower down clubs meant to catch up with you see the top end of town continue to load up on talent that the draft is meant to act to equalise.

Points deficits that are carried over should be applied to the same round that the player was drafted in. So if Fletcher is taken in R1 then Brisbane should need to cough up their R1 pick in a future year. That's my view.

You could make the argument that that should be the case for all bid matches, not only cases where the club goes into deficit, but I certainly think it should be the case with deficits. There needs to be some sort of penalty associated with going into deficit.

Watched a bit of video of Jed Adams which of course makes me an instant expert and he does play with authority as a strong marking key defender. He played a bit like Ethan Phillips. Looks physically ready to go too.
I hope you saw more than the AFL highlights of him taking about a half a dozen uncontested marks and virtually nothing else. The least impressive highlights package I have ever seen, not because he didn’t look good- he did- but so would my grandma if that’s all she had to do (and if someone could dig her up).

Using Twomey’s Phantom, there are still 5 picks before pick #33. My remaining draft board is:

1. Hustwaite
2. Davey (which will be matched)
3. Keeler
4. Lemmey
5. Munkara
6. Scully

After that I have a bunch that I think are a reach at #33 and could be available at #60 including Van Es, Phillips, D’Aloia, Adam’s, Richards, Foster, Magor.

I like the sounds of Will Elliot too, though I have seen nothing of him. I’m guessing Matthew Elliot played cricket with Parker and Davies or would share close friends. We should have the lowdown on him.

On that note, did Parker’s nephew nominate or is he still playing cricket?

Hey they were good uncontested marks. And I'm sure there was one where he took a pack mark. 😉

Tbh he looks like a reach to me at 33, I am still hoping there will be a slider.

I was actually somewhat enjoying reading this article, until I got to Richmond’s draft targets.

So… Port’s late mail states that Port will take Lemmey if available at 33, but the belief is he will be pick before then. Very next paragraph, Richmond will target Lemmey with their first pick at 53…. Does any one proof read these articles?

I'm still hoping we go for at least 2 KPPs if not 3.
I think our first pick is to late to go with best available unless there is a real slider we really rate.
Lemmy, Van Es , Hayes, Marshall, Verrall, Scully, Elliott and possibly Phillips although I would prefer 18 yr olds for the future are possible targets.
I think we got a mid in JHF and 2 small forwards in Rioli and Evans let's gamble on some talls.

This guy is big bloke, looks solid raw type. (197cm 100kg) Sydney Swans Academy player.

Also Van Es highlights look a little better , nothing amazing but looks pretty solid with safe hands and penetrating kick.

Aaron Cadman say's our own Zak Butters is a mentor of his 🤔

Melbourne has continued to show interest in the Bombers' selection, however, adding its pick 13 in this year's draft to the two future first-round choices as part of a swap of selections that would see it take Essendon's prized No.4 pick and No.22.

The Bombers haven't accepted that deal but are continuing to consider opportunities to turn the early pick into multiple strong selections, with clubs able to swap picks again as soon as the first round of the draft starts on Monday night. Rival clubs are also aware of their interest in shifting back to later in the top 10 if they could pick up a future first-rounder.

If the Bombers were to trade the pick it would throw a major curveball into the top order of the draft, but should they hold at their starting spot, their selection between Elijah Tsatas and Mattaes Phillipou also spins off a number of different permutations.

Joe Richards to Port in the Draft Central phantom. Hustwaite going pick before ours, Lemmey doesn't appear to feature in their thinking.

Looking forward to this board melting when it skips over Lemmey and other tall options at 33

I look forward to this board melting no matter who Port picks.

I have it on absolute rock solid authority that the player Port really had it's heart set on is going to be taken the pick before our first. :(

Happen to know a friend of a mate, who is a cousin to a girl dating Kripps' daughter, and he has the inside doss. Can't mention the player's name or I'll get in trouble though!!!

Read a comment on the draft board which sums it up. Lemmey plays like Lukosious but has none of his talent. Probably gonna be a late pick, i'd pass
Lukosius was a number 2 draft and is only 195cm, talentwise he hasnt lived up to that rating. At the high pick of 33 I'd be prepared to take a high risk punt on a high potential kpd who now stands in at 202cm ( interviewed this wk and said he has grown). There are really no safe bets at 33 in a sub par draft year.

Latest intel: The Power won’t be big players in this year’s draft after their frantic trade period, so their best hope is someone high on their draft board falls down the order. Rival clubs believe they’ll look at taking a key defender with one of their selections, with James Van Es and Jed Adams both linked to the club. Although if gun WA small forward-midfielder Darcy Jones is still on the board by the time they pick, the Power would find it hard to ignore him. Port Fairy product Toby McMullin — the son of Ian McMullin, who kicked 55 goals from 49 AFL games for Collingwood and Essendon in the late 1980s and early 90s — has also reportedly attracted some interest from the Power.

Best-case scenario: Jones and/or Lewis Hayes — the brother of current Power ruck Sam Hayes — are both available at the Power’s first draft selection and one of Van Es or McMullin slips to their Pick 60.

Worst-case scenario: Their aggressive trade period has left them with no capital — either in this year’s or next year’s draft — to work with, so they don’t get a draft board ‘slider’.
