Still think we need another goal kicking small forward, McEntee is not a goal kicker ,was given games till he kicked some (in big wins) and jury.is still out on Rioli getting back to top form. Zane Williams never got a shot at Geelong and Lowe and Gore are still out there, would be better options than Evans who.has never made an impact in multiple seasons at the top level
Challenge is, the best will be gone, so really taking a punt on athletic ability and one or two traits - so basically what we are doing with McEntee.

Our small forward hopes really rest on Raz and Junior.

I wouldn’t mind as rooking a DFA - someone like Stack, who might be able to play the role.

He’s a natural defender.

But yeah not much offensively
What do you think distinguishes him from a Riley Grundy type? Both are pretty athletic and both capable defensively. Grundy could just never get anything offensively going and that was ultimately his downfall. It seems Van Es has similar issues.

I think these days most clubs would be hesitant to draft defenders without offensive weapons because the game has gone so far in the direction of attacking via turnover and intercepts.

I think Van Es is similiar to what Esava would have offered, both are big athletic , defensive types who can compete and intercept, but aren't natural skilled rebounders. If they were then they would be top ten types as these kpds are very rare. You need to support these types by getting natural offensive deliverers around them , like Farrell and Burgoyne.

I liked grundys physicality but he’s not the natural instincts that I think van es has.

There’s blokes that would have seen a lot more of van es than I have tho.

I ideally do like 2 way defenders, but I reckon van es will fit well next to what we have and we just need him to not be a liability. I’m not even sure what his potential is there

Archie Lovelock?

Van Es' rebounding abilities are limited. I'd like to say that I havent enough of him doing that rather than saying he's poor in that department. Maybe a coach that backs him in might make him better offensively.

But I think the best part of him is that his defensive ability is really good 1v1 and he's got that speed to close down and spoil too. Having people like Houston, Farrell, Burgoyne and Sinn may not require him to be amazing at rebounding

So are you saying Williams is a better option then Evans? Someone further down the pecking order at Geelong VFL.

So he's Dougal Howard?

I am not too fussed with the rebounding capability either. We have enough players with that ability in the side already. 1v1 against the monster forwards is where we struggle and have done for a long time. Kanagaroo ben brown kicked ten on us the other year, so a lockdown type is exactly the right fit for us!

I’m not sure you can carry a pure lock down defender anymore. Teams don’t structure for it and you lose so much the other way. Even awkward kicks like Jonas are expected to be a part of attacking movements.

Is there such a defender in the AFL currently?

All of that said, you aren’t getting the perfect KPD at 33 and definitely not at pick 60. So if Van Es is there, why not? And seems like there will be a few project KPPs available around the later picks.

2 draftees and 2 rookies by my read.

So maybe:
  • slider from top 30 at 33
  • KPP type at 60
  • best left first rookie, Montie for the other.

Does Barkla (right spelling?) get a gig as a Cat B?

Entree, Evans etc are stop gaps so to speak ..

at the end of 2024 we will have Louie Montgomery (HFF)
we might have Pickett (from Melb)
we will have 1 maybe 2 more Burgoyne's (Ky & Rome) and they all can't fit down back

So, in a few years (2) the plan should be

FF Georgiades Marshall Pickett
Burgoyne (take your pick which one)

HF Louie Montgomery Finlayson Butters
(Swapping with Rozee /JHF in the midfield)
