So, we have 3 draft picks currently (33 and 60).
We have committed to re-drafting Williams as a rookie.
That leaves us with 2 draft spots!!!!!

Does this assume Evans is confirmed as an in as a DFA already? Or does someone else have to be delisted for us to maintain those 2 spots? And who is that, since we have everone now contracted?

Can't see that we would then commit to Harley Monty as a F/S in that case - or any further DFA's like Stack, et al.

Maybe we look at Van Es, Phillips or young Marshall from South, as a KPD? That's one pick.

And one other - would it be a KPF, or a ruck/forward, or a small foward/mid?

I watch the U18 final and Van Es struggled to make any impact

Whilst Dougal had solid attributes we'd be worse in the backline with his brain fades and costly errors.
I don't think Van Es has Brain fades though. Defensively, he rarely loses a contest and perhaps the best pure 1v 1 defender in this draft.

He just doesn't provide much going forward, he's got a good long leg on him but doesn't use it much.

The Sunday Mail suggests that Binn would be a player Port would be interested in targetting. That gives us the option to have a Sinn Binn combination.
It's Binns, but let's not let the truth get in the way of a good joke ;)

Dougal wasn't ditched because of the brain fades. They traded him because his first instinct at every contest was to spoil the ball 50m across the boundary, even if he was in a position to mark. And in the Nathan Bassett method of defending that isn't allowable. These days all of our defenders will mark if they can over spoiling, sometimes to disadvantage. Even Pasini plays very assertively at SANFL level.

And if you look at the trends in the AFL, these days most good teams have defenders who mark the ball. I would go as far to say that the Daniel Talia pure stopper defender is a dying breed. All three of the previous premiership winners have intercept marking, assertive defenders.

Geelong - De Koning, Stewart, Henry
Melbourne - May, Lever, Petty
Richmond - Grimes, Tarrant, Gibcus (current list)

Given Nathan Bassett is still at the club and the ethos hasn't changed, I would be shocked if we drafted a pure stopper Talia/Howard-like defender unless they were available late and we had a solid degree of faith that they can build an intercept game.

If you can go into each game knowing you have a player who can consistently shut down the oppositions best KPF, the disposals really become irrelevant. I'd rather have a KPD that gets 6 disposals & keeps a player like Hawkins to 1 goal, then a player who gets 12+ possessions but allows his direct opponent to kick a bag.

Binns has a draft profile straight out of the Parker drafting playbook.

Elite running high production outside mid who would excel in a high half forward role.

Also first name Jaxon and we've recruited a couple of those over the years.

Hope there's a key defender at pick 60 😉

Van Es profile:

Sounds like a Port Adelaide player already.
I like how his weakness is his in game athleticism, not that he doesn't have it, just that he doesn't use it. That is easily fixed.

When I read about him after his combine results, I immediately thought of Dougal Howard. Howard ran a 2.94 sec for 20m sprint in his draft year combine for 11th fastest where as Van Es did a 2.91 sec for 4th fastest. Dougal was 199cms/91kgs Van Es is 196cms/97kgs, plenty of meat on the bones already.

Dougal was selected as a KPF/KPD/Ruck possibility. Van Es has been solely played as a KPD.

In his Inside Football draft profile in 2014 the Murray Bushrangers coach said he was an elite 100m sprinter and also said, his athleticism stood out, had a huge leap, he did well in the repeat sprints but didn't have a motor yet but said that will come. 4 years later after an ACL 12 month set back, Dougal did have the motor.

Dougal also was a late starter to footy Van Es isn't and has all the qualities that Dougal's U/18 coach said he had back in 2014 plus he has a better tank than Dougal had.

What he has over Dougal is that one of his strengths is his one on ones defence. We need a tall KPD that is good at this.

The 2 best KPD's in the draft are All Oz CHB Busslinger (196cm) who I reckon WCE will take at pick 8 and All Oz FB Josh Weddle (192cm)who will go around pick 20-25. Sam Hayes' brother Lewis is also a KPD (197/81), was selected All Oz in the back pocket, is ranked in that 20-30 range, but his 2km time trial video suggests like Sam, he doesn't have the tank. I don't want to pick someone we waste 2 or 3 years trying to develop their tank and might fail at developing it.

If we didn't trade pick 8 ie no Dunkley, no Graham, no JHF, we probably could have drafted Jed Busslinger with pick 8. The WCE I'm sure would have gone with one of the Vic midfield kids if they hung onto pick 2.

So Van Es is a more promising prospect at this stage of his career then Dougal was, surely we take him at #33 if he’s available?

Key Defenders possibly available at Pick 33, 60 & Rookie:

33:
Lewis Hayes 197cm/81kg Key Defender Eastern Ranges

James Van Es 196cm/97kg Key Defender GWV Rebels

60:
Kyle Marshall 198cm/79kg Key Defender South Adelaide

Ethan Phillips 196cm/90kg Key Defender age 23 Port Melbourne

Rookie:
Darcy Minchella 197cm/76kg Ruckman/Key Defender West Adelaide

Whilst I generally agree with the sentiment, Hugh's probably not the best example, he was recruited as a genuine midfielder in U18s. We played him outside, probably as much to protect him after his surgery as anything.

Hugh Jackson
Hugh Jackson

Jackson has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to win possession through the midfield, with good stoppage craft and clean hands giving him an advantage inside the contest. Even when heavily contested, Jackson is able to keep his feet, cleanly win possession and then deliver to a teammate's advantage, with his creativeness by hand often leading to impactful exits from stoppages. Without the football, Jackson can still have an influence around the contest. His defensive effort to prevent his opponents from exiting the stoppage adds another element to his midfield craft. Jackson is a capable tackler and he consistently smothers or deflects opposition attempts to win the ball away from the contest.
He has been a bit unfortunate with injury…… but I am hoping for a breakout year in the SANFL …….. before his injuries this and last year Hugh was earmarked very highly as a creative midfielder.

The more I read, the more I feel like Van Es would be available at our 2nd pick which will end up in early 50s after F/S bids. If that is the case, who should we take at 33?

The 5 prospects I'd look at are Munkara, Magor, Darcy Jones, Charlie Clarke and Lemmey

Then hope Van Es or Ethan Phillips fall into the 50s which currently looks like a strong chance.
