I think its very possible we take Max Gruzewski as a tall defender. (He played mainly back this year...took some species playing forward for metro when he came back from injury) His major problem seems to be a lack of tank. (Ge was the player who helped Lewis Hayes Cross the line in the 2km combine run) I just think he is in the equation with van es and Phillips...although he is 193cm)

192cm Defender/Forward, VIC
Could be around the mark; albeit, he has sneaked in as Pick 25 (North) in the most recent Top-25 Phantom draft.

I’ve done the calculations for Michalanney. According to the Redlegs Museum webpage, he made his senior debut during the 1974 season and played 4 games. Then he played 14 games in 1975. So we’re at 18 games. 1976 - In 1977 - 23 games. 1978 - 26 games.

So we’re at 67 games going into the 1979 season, assuming he played every one of them. But if you look at his Wikipedia page, you’ll see that the Football Budget is used as a reference of him playing 100 games….and they say he got to 98 games during the 1979 season.

Norwood only played 24 games that year, so even if he had played every single game (which he didn’t), he would have been on 91 games, not 98. Add the one game he played for SA, and that’s 92 games.

Then he missed the entirety of the 1980 and all but 3 games of the 1981 season. So he’s on 95 games going into 1982 - remember, this is assuming he never got injured.

25 games in 1982 (120)
25 games in 1983 (145)
26 games in 1984 (171)
24 games in 1985 (195)

In 1986 it is stated he played 11 games for the senior side and then retired - bringing his total to 206.

If you can find proof that he missed 7 games during his career other than his injury - like for a hamstring or whatever - then his son won’t be eligible for Adelaide.
I have the SANFL's post 1977 centenary season official publication - League Football in South Australia - the publication I used to pick up that Russell Ebert had not played 200 games by the end of 1977 and therefore Brett technically didn't qualify under the old F-S rules.

By the end of 1977 Jim had played 60 games in total, and 20 games in 1977. He kicked 44 goals in 1977 and 119 in total.

We know from Redlegs Museum that he played in the Ardath Cup night series GF and help Norwood beat East Perth.

It incorrectly says 1976 when it was 1977. So he had played at most, 59 eligible games by the end of 1977. Norwood did play 3 games in the 1976 NFL Willis Cup, losing the SF which featured Vic teams, but they defected in 1977.

Norwood beat East Perth in the GF so that's potentially 3 games of ineligible games as well as potentially 3 in 1976 and 2 Datsun Cup games in 1975 as it was the top 8 sides in a straight knockout after Rd 6 and Norwood didn't make the GF. I don't know if Norwood won or lost their first knockout game. He probably didn't play in 1975 given he was only a kid, these were mid week games and saved him for the Saturday games.

I'm just all set, for when it's bleedingly obvious we need two KPD's (ideally both 195cm+, but at least one of them is), that we're not going to draft a KPD at all. We're all in on Hinkley preservation mode and a tall isn't going to make an impact next year. Likely no one drafted at our picks are, but drafting two smalls and more of a chance one of them does. :(

Would he last to our second pick? I can’t see us not picking a key defender at #33.
Problem is he might not be there at our pick
Yeah I understand the KD love as I want one also but only if there any good and I don’t see a lot of names thrown around that excites me much.
This lad looks like he could play both forward and back.
There’s a couple of players he could replace straight away DBJ for starters.

18+a possible 23 league games in 1976 (I forgot to add that to my post)+20 in 177.

That equals 61 games. You're saying he played 60 games so he must have missed one in 1976. Did that publication always include night matches in a players total?

He most assuredly played in the first round of the 1976 NFL Willis Cup - he's listed as kicking 2 goals against Carlton. He also played in the semi-final against North Melbourne and kicked 2 goals.

He was named in the best players for the 1977 Ardath Cup cup semi finals, and listed as being part of the GF team. So that's another guaranteed 2 games.

That's four guaranteed games that if included in the 60 game total, would take his total down to 56.

In 1978, he played in two games in the Escort Cup (kicked goals in both).

In 1979, he played at least one game in the the Escort Cup (was named in the best players). He was named on the ground for the GF but looks to have been substituted for Button.

Yes the SANFL included all games played in preseason cups/mid season cups and night series games in total played by all players its why in 1977 Trevor Sorrell gets credited with 26 games when Port only played 22 + 2 finals games, Kim Kinnear and Greg Phillips with 25.

In 1977 Norwood played 22 games + the elimination final and Michael Gregg and Paul Adler are credited with 27 games, Glenn Rosser, Grahame Dunstan and J Clarke with 26 games, and Michael Taylor with 25 games.

I think we should draft one 195+ defender and find another as a delisted free agent (even if only as a stop gap). We also need a young small forward.

#33 for best available- Hayes, Lemmey, Keeler, Scully, D’Aloia, Munkara
#60 for Phillips, Van Es.
DFA Evans (I would have gone Narkle or Cockatoo but it seems we committed to “Timmy”) and find the best 195+ ready to go defender available.

Barkla is a free hit so hopefully we take him and have learnt our lesson from not nominating Michael Fredericks as an academy player.

It's being talked up by people who have a vested interest in the pageantry of the draft.

I haven't seen clubs say anything about this draft other than it's shallow as ****.

Check out the BigFooty Phantom Draft. Most of those talls have been picked.

Macca picked one from left field for us.

If draftguru is accurate then there are 590 players on the clubs' main list at the moment and at a minimum of 36 on the list ie 648 that means as little as 59 players could be drafted as Geelong have 37 on the main list, for clubs to meet minimum list requirements.

If every club filled their list to 38 on the main, then potentially 94 players could be drafted.

Now this doesn't include players that will be elevated, eg as Pasini needs to be elevated but this hasn't officially happened yet and draftguru still has him (and others) as a rookie.

More delistings can still happen.

Last year 65 players were drafted, 1 never drafted before in the PSD and 10 never drafted/rookied before were taken in the rookie draft. 15 players on main/rookie lists were redrafted as rookies.

Then before the season started in the pre season supplemental draft, 12 players never drafted before were taken and 5 from academies were taken. Then mid season 17 players were drafted.

I meant high quality talls. A lot can change in 18mths though.

Well done mate!

In hindsight though, my opinion is:

33 - Van Es (it's slightly above where I rate him but I'm happy to pay the premium)

56 - Drury

73 - one of Phillips, Eyers or Marshall in that order

I seen Lemmey got picked the pick before you picked Ryan.
If Lemmey was available would have you still picked Ryan?

I would have picked Lemmey

Was a coin toss between Ryan and Van Es. Was hoping Van Es might fall to my next pick, whereas I thought Ryan was no chance.

Would've thought Phillips would've been the better option at 56 given our list needs.

I like Eyers better and was hopeful Phillips would get to my last pick. He got close
