The author has imagined a possible early F/S bid on Max Michalanney, but this bit puzzles me:

A 20% discount is applied to any father-son bid in the first round, meaning if a club called Michalanney’s name at pick 17, it would cost Adelaide 820 points (1025 less the discount) to match.

The discount on any bid from the second-round onwards is capped at 197, meaning a bid at pick 25 would see the Crows give up 559 points (756 less the discount).

Wouldn't the discount on 756 points be 151, meaning they'd pay 601 points, or does any match for a F/S bid after round one get 197 points discount, no matter how late the bid comes?

The second one.
The usage of capped to describe the second round onwards discount is stupid.

The best way to describe would be the discount value is the higher of 20% of the bidding pick's value or 197 points.

Yeah, they managed to confuse me - should've said pegged or set instead of capped.

There will be plenty of players at pick ~55 who are at a similar level to Phillips.

I think Phillips is the clear standout mature defender.

He could step in day 1 and instantly improve our defence. I don’t see much point in plucking an 18 yr old KPD at pick 55~ as they won’t be ready to play for years and we can’t afford to wait unless we take another mature defender earlier.

Would have absolutely no issues with going early and just taking him at 33.

Hawthorn were great during their three peat at identifying their needs and going after them such as Isaac Smith taken at 19 for a 22 year old. We need to do the same IMO.

There are plenty of players who look great at a lower level but can't translate their ability to the AFL. See Sam Skinner for relevant and recent example.

There are far more busts than successes in that respect.

Absolutely but you could also say that about the draft as a whole. Every pick from 1-100 is a calculated gamble which may or may not make it.

We’re at the point with our list profile I think we should be looking to add 2 KPD ideally in the hope 1 of them does pay off and also someone who is ready to step straight up.

I agree.

It is that much of a need that we just need to bite the bullet and take a mature KPD at 33.

We cant take the risk that we "think" they will make it to our next pick.

Just read the D and T board and see how many clubs fans see a KPD as a need (including Geelong fans which is ironic given Esava).
