He he - I'd like to see Dodo's face if Essendon did this pick swap with St Kilda and then the Saints used it to pick Phillipou...

AFL Draft news: Essendon open to live trade to shuffle down order

Essendon will secure three junior Indigenous stars on draft night, and could land a much bigger bounty if it plays its cards right. Here’s the inside word.

Essendon is open to a draft night trade that would push the Bombers down the draft order while still securing their No.1 midfield target, but it would take a compelling offer.

The Bombers are determined to nail a draft night strategy that could see them nailing a powerful midfielder like Mattaes Phillipou to round out their onball unit as well as selecting a trio of exciting Indigenous talents.

They have picks 4, 22, 54, 68 and 72, and ideally would use the early pick and selection 22 before a club lodges a bid on father-son prospect Alwyn Davey Jr.

Clubs are likely to consider Davey from the late teens onwards, and Essendon will surely match that bid, but would love to secure a bonus player at pick 22 before his name is called.

But before that they will have a decision on the No.4 pick – set to drift to pick 5 after Will Ashcroft’s father-son selection at Brisbane.

Essendon is interested in Phillipou, an exciting 190cm, 89kg Woodville West Torrens mid-forward equally adept in the centre square or pushing into attack with his strong overhead marking.

But if they believed they could secure him with a pick later in the top 10 it could allow them to secure a second selection – likely in next year’s draft – as the price for easing down the top 10.

St Kilda is one club at pick 10 who has ambitions for a higher draft selection.

Hustwaite isnt sliding to 33 for a start and Long is a Geelong Grammar boy and big Geelong supporter. He is a small mid, who has been thrown forward due to injuries, hence not a specialised forward. Both are highly unlikely.
A small mid thrown forward sounds very likely.

Not needed but likely

Darcy Minchella

West Adelaide, Ruck/defender, 18, 197cm, 76kg

He may have not had the same spotlight as a number of his tall West Adelaide teammates, but Minchella’s terrific finish to the year has drawn the attention of AFL recruiters. The mobile big man – who was part of South Australia’s under-18 squad but didn’t feature at the carnival – produced a monster performance against eventual premier Glenelg in Round 15, tallying 21 disposals, 17 contested possessions, seven contested marks, six hitouts-to-advantage and a 173 ranking points. Minchella might be slightly undersized as a ruckman but he could have the athletic profile and hands to make up for it.
Plays like: Jared Brennan

197cm SA boy and has athletic traits like Jared Brennan.

I know nothing about him but this is my new favourite late pick

Nice pick up and exactly the type of profile that matched previous recruiting by us ie Pasini, Dougal Howard, Logan Austin.
I also think he is the Justin Westhoff replacement that we have been screaming for since he retired.

The only person screaming for a Westhoff replacement is Ken Hinkley because he doesn't know how to develop tall forwards or tall defenders.

Final AFL Draft rankings: Experts rank top 50 prospects in 2022 crop

Our draft experts have dropped their final consensus rankings for 2022 — and there’s a big change at the top, a top 20 bolter and some unlucky sliders. See where they agreed and differed.

The AFL Draft is days away and club recruiters are busy finalising their talent orders, but which young guns are on them?

Our draft experts Dan Batten, Jordan Pinto and Chris Cavanagh have been keeping tabs on all the top prospects and have put their heads together to bring you their FINAL top 50 consensus power rankings for 2022.

And there are plenty of changes from their top 40 October edition, with a change right at the top, a bolter surging into the top 20 and some unlucky prospects sliding down the order.

Phillips not listed Lemmey at 45 and Van Es 50 interesting.

Are we a bit starry eyed on Lemmey cos he's local. The game where he kicked a bag looked like he wasn't

up against much. Not completely sold on his kicking action. I mean it's ok but not a patch on this guy.

Still at #27 Hustwaite unlikely to fall to us.

Van Es being ranked at 50 isn't 'interesting' at all, it's pretty much where he's rated everywhere outside of this board where we have an inexplicable hardon for him for some reason.

Read on one of the draft pages that Lemmey may go undrafted due to off field issues.

This was supposed to be a draft for talls! I'm not even sold on Hayes or Busslinger. Gruzewski is looking the best of tallish defenders who could be available at 33ish. Its likely he has gone by then. I'm thinking Darcy Jones / Noah Long at 33 then two talls left over from keeler / lemmey/ phillips / Adams / van es.

I wonder whether we would try and swap 33 and 60 for 2 picks in the late 30s/early 40s and try and grab 2x KPD?

Might depend on who slides to 33.

There isn't any real quality outside the 20's , the best prospects are in the early part of the draft such as Busslinger and Hayes. Outside of these 2, any other KPDs are very average and or long term risky prospects. ie (Van Es, Phillips, Adams, Marshall, to name a few)

There was a suggestion of 33 & 60 for 36 & ~52 from Brisbane.

More points for Brisbane, and after the Ashcroft bid, 36 would drop back to where 33 was anyway so no loss of position for us.

That would help. No idea if those picks still exist.
Brisbane have 34, 35, 36, 38, 55.
38 and 55 doesn't do what was suggested for Port and 30sish pts net gain ain't much gain for Brisbane.

We couldn't do the trade until draft night and chances are all Brisbane's picks in the 30s will be gone in the first 2 picks.

Yep 18mths ago it hyped up as a draft with plenty of quality young talls. The reality is looking very different.

Its strange. I dont think Cadman was even one of the early highly rated talls. Now it looks like he will be the only tall in the top ten and the only one who looks 'unbustable'. (and he's not a dominant size at afl level and a dodgy shot on goal)

Looking at next year, Harley Reid looks like the greatest player in the history of football! :) He makes Ashcroft look like a stat padding diver!

Time to get deep and meaningful with the annual 'let's find the funniest draftee's name' list. Not that we should laugh at people's names - except when it's a case of what were their parents thinking?

In that category we find given names such as:

Ashtyn
Kydan
Jhett
Steely
Tyreece
Baynen
Jayke
Jaylon
Bayliegh

But it's also reassuring to find some traditional names that you don't see much any more, with a couple of Georges and a Nigel. However, there are no Johns - except as part of a surname.

Sturt 'product' Stirling Phipps-Parsons sounds very traditional, but should probably be pursuing a Rugby career with a name like that. Griffith Julian may have filled his nomination form the wrong way around, and I wonder if Mitch Miller still has his gang. Brian Taylor may be challenged by names such as Kye Pfrengle and Giorgio Varagianis.

Some other names that gave me a chuckle for no reason other than shallowness and boredom include:

Yu Yu Ashwin
Felix Flockhart
Liam Loverso
Phoenix Prince
Liam Puncher
Tristen Waack

The full list is here - including old mate Wylie Buzza and an even older Phil Davis, who I thought had realised he was well and truly cooked.

Liam "****" puncher 🤔 or we could just go with roller I guess.

If I dont see a "Puncher goes Waack" headline at some point in the future then newspaper editors just aren't trying

A lot of sub editors have been sacked the last decade. They don't do headlines like they used to.
