While you're here, take a few minutes out of your Draft Day(s) to cast a vote on the 2022 Game Previews poll.

I'm pleased that we went for needs, and a couple of mature aged players to neutralise the depth we lost. I have no idea about the players though, so I won't comment on them.

Does this mean we get to pick our NGA boys for cat B selections?

Would think that we would go Draper (injury hit but very athletic 197cm utility who can play pretty much any position on the ground) and maybe Conrad Williams (speed and skilled off a wing, but very skinny and doesn't get enough of it at this stage). Be interesting to see if we are tempted instead to go with a Hagan or Gilbey instead of Williams.

Can't see us going Broadbent when we have taken Knobel and we have enough pure tall forwards.
Broadbent is super talented as is Knobel. We are still lacking Key talls

I kinda respect the club for going two mature players. We've identified our window and our core and we dont want to piss fart around with more kids. We identified two projects in Davies and Knobel that we know we can stash and take our time with.

Do also agree we probably could have brought in Emmet and Wagner through cheaper means but overall, happy with a slightly bolder approach to drafting compared to our normal "best available"

We will also have next year to load up again in a strong draft

Apparently Draper and Williams
I would have thought Scaife would get a go. Im only going by stats of course. Thing is though besides Amiss do we actually have any key forwards that are sure things? To me Kuek won't make it but id love to be wrong

No player is a sure thing but we would have gone we have Amiss, Taberner, Jackson (hybrid ruck), Corbett, Treacy, Kuek and Benning (Hybrid ruck). We add Draper (Hybrid) and that is a few tall forwards on the list.

Pretty sure we nominated all three of Draper, Scaife and Williams, but that we only have two spots....

Two category B rookie spots is what is reported for teams in 2023, but the AFL's own website says this:

In addition to these six rookie-listed players, each club can include up to three additional players (now referred to as Category B rookies) on its Rookie List provided the player either:

Ohhh I definetly agree that we have them on the list. I just worry guys like Kuek and Benning in a year or so will be in the delist category. Taberner hopefully has another 3-4 seasons left but has been injured so so much. Maybe next year we will get a Key forward to stash away higher up the order

Haven't we already told Bourne he's not in the running?

I believe so but there was an article written outside of the footy club that suggested of the three of Draper, Scaife and Williams only two would be picked up by the club.

But if we aren't bringing across Ultan Kelm and that three spots is legit, we can give them all a place for the price of an extra $100,000

How come no small FWD?

Think we'll go for Motlop next year?

I reckon it is not that we tried (we were definitely into Konstanty, but obviously had no pick anywhere near him at the end of the day); we already have a decent number of small forward types (although like the argument above, you can argue that many of them are not "quality"), also next year's draft has quite a few decent medium and small forwards, so wouldn't surprise me if we are waiting around for that.

How bad did Gilbey break his leg? Surely he's a train-on at worst or possibly a rookie somewhere. Either that or the draft profile overstated him.

If you can have 3 cat b then be interesting to see if we list all three. Obviously rate them highly enough to nominate and not have already blown them off like Bourne.

Cal Twomey's write-up on us a couple of days ago:

Picks: 30, 43, 44, 65, 70, 77 (likely to use four selections)

By the time bids come in, Fremantle is set to enter the draft outside the top 30 for the first time since 2004 after it traded its first-round pick in the Luke Jackson deal. It will make for a quiet opening night before they use their four picks on Tuesday, with a couple of their choices set to move in on draft night after Brisbane's picks in the 30s get wiped out through bids. They may look at tall backs or rucks depending if available, with Harry Barnett a possibility to slip in the 20s but unlikely to get to Freo's first pick. Tom McCallum and Hugh Davies are defenders around this stage of the pool, while Geelong Falcons defender Oscar Murdoch has had some Dockers interest. Local Kaleb Smith could also be considered, wingman Caleb Mitchell could be worth a look late, while the Dockers have done work on former Melbourne and North Melbourne player Corey Wagner, who has starred in the VFL with Port Melbourne. If the Dockers look for a different young ruck to add to their group, Clay Tucker and Max Knobel could be weighed up, while Next Generation Academy pair Conrad Williams and Josh Draper appear likely to be listed as category B rookies if overlooked at the national intake.

Not bad. Emmett the only surprise.

That’s actually pretty impressive by Cal

One thing I note is that it wasn't just him; Jonti Schuback who I was also a big fan of and plays a similar role also missed out - I am not surprised that we didn't take either but for a heap of teams who don't have the skill off the back line I am surprised that players like this missed out.
