While you're here, take a few minutes out of your Draft Day(s) to cast a vote on the 2022 Game Previews poll.

So are we likely to only take 1 rookie tomorow and hold a pick for Preseason/Midseason draft?
I think you're right.
Wasn't it reported that Liam Serong to be invited as a train on player? If so, wouldn't that mean the club's keeping a spot open for after the drafts?

That is my read on things as well.

Add 2 Cat-B rookies and 1 Cat-A Rookie (ie Sam Gilbey for example) and leave one rookie spot open for SSP.

And what’s your read on who we take with those spots ?
No idea. I just agree with the poster. If the club have said they will invite the Serong sibling for training then you’d think they will be keeping a rookie spot open. We would likely invite a couple of other players to training as well.

I like Hugh and Knobel had been linked to us. Hugh Davies and Jed Adams were similar draft range. We obviously rated Hugh higher and I can see why plus he is a taller KPD.

I would have thought that we could have drafted Emmett at 57 and left Wagner for the Rookie draft.

33. Hugh Davies
41. Kaleb Smith
42. Max Knobel
57. Tom Emmett
Rookie: Wagner

I guess if WC don’t get in before us we will get a shot at either or both of Jed Hagan or Sam Gilbey in the rookie draft.

Keep one spot for SSP (the West has us linked to serong as SSP train on.

Maybe so, you might be right, but I think the prioritisation of Emmet ahead of Knobel, when we have a clear nead for a developing Ruck, and have even signified so, says to me that we simply don't rate Emmet as a pick in the 50's, or a rookie pick, or someone we'd be happy to take with our 3rd pick if they were still available, but rate him higher, possibly a bit higher.

Maybe he could have slipped through to the rookie draft, but the fact that we valued him high enough to take him at the back end of the 2nd/early 3rd, should speak volumes as to how the club rates him.

It's not like we're haggling over a player in the 4th round taken a few spots ahead of rookie picks. We clearly value and have targetted this kid.

Posters need to read between the lines here. He's not a dregs of the barrel pick that we've grabbed because we haven't had any other options, or after we've a glut of picks. We've spent our first needs pick on a player that wasn't widely spoken about, ahead of other significant needs. It's clear to me that we rate this kid a fair bit, and not as bottom of the barrel bum.

Cal Twomey's write-up on us a couple of days ago:

Picks: 30, 43, 44, 65, 70, 77 (likely to use four selections)

By the time bids come in, Fremantle is set to enter the draft outside the top 30 for the first time since 2004 after it traded its first-round pick in the Luke Jackson deal. It will make for a quiet opening night before they use their four picks on Tuesday, with a couple of their choices set to move in on draft night after Brisbane's picks in the 30s get wiped out through bids. They may look at tall backs or rucks depending if available, with Harry Barnett a possibility to slip in the 20s but unlikely to get to Freo's first pick. Tom McCallum and Hugh Davies are defenders around this stage of the pool, while Geelong Falcons defender Oscar Murdoch has had some Dockers interest. Local Kaleb Smith could also be considered, wingman Caleb Mitchell could be worth a look late, while the Dockers have done work on former Melbourne and North Melbourne player Corey Wagner, who has starred in the VFL with Port Melbourne. If the Dockers look for a different young ruck to add to their group, Clay Tucker and Max Knobel could be weighed up, while Next Generation Academy pair Conrad Williams and Josh Draper appear likely to be listed as category B rookies if overlooked at the national intake.

Not bad. Emmett the only surprise.
Yeah Cal goes alright, but he went 3 from 9. At our point in the draft he was like one of those psychics saying "Is there a John in the audience?"

I gave Fox Sports a D+
Like clockwork. Each year, Walls and co produce late picks that prove to be very good footballers, and each year, the "experts" write off those selections. Some late picks over the last few years. Ryan, Darcy, Cox, Freddy, O Driscoll, Shultz, Switta, Treacy, Meek. All of them picked up after 27. Meanwhile, there's Vic based guys like Dodoro and SOS, who fail miserably in identifying talent apart from a few obvious high draft pick selections.
If we traded as well as we have drafted we'd have a premiership by now.

So of we look at the totality of our off season so far.

Lose Lobb, Tucker, Acres Logue, Mundy, Blakely, Crowden

Gain Jackson Corbett, O’Meara, Davies, Emmett Knobel, Wagner.

we look a bit more balanced now, perhaps with Lobb’s output the big question mark.
and while we don’t have our first for next year we still have a reasonable hand

Well punters the main draft is done. We've come away with Benjamin Button the red-headed key defender, Tom 'Doc' Emmett (who only has 4 unique letters in his name), SoT (son of Trent) the Gippsland Giant and Corey (gory, story, allegory and Montessori for those playing at home). All have their own stories to tell, but now they're ours so get around them! Personally I'm sad that Wagner got rid of that sweet mo, although I'm hoping we pick it up as a rookie.

Speaking of, today sees the pre-season & rookie drafts take place. Kicks off at 3pm VFL time which is lunchtime back in the Motherland, with the rookies going off around 3:20pm or so. We've got a couple of NGA kids to look forward to, and possibly another surprise in store. We're pretty wacky like that.

One final note - VOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITE GAME PREVIEW OR FREO WILL PASS ON ALL ROOKIE PICKS! BOB MURPHY TOLD ME SO.

There's also Meek and Western. If I was trying to line up the replacements ...

Lobb --> Jackson
Meek --> Knobel
Mundy --> O'Meara
Logue --> Davies
Acres --> Wagner
Crowden --> Corbett
Western --> Emmett
Tucker --> ???
Blakely --> ???
Valente --> Kuek (will include this as it is sort of a list change, albeit already happened)

I'm putting the small mid/forwards as being replaced by taller forwards. Which is a good thing. But we have lost midfield depth overall, so maybe that's where we look in the rookie draft. We shall see.
