Would be hard to pass up on Wardlaw if he is available.

But you'd expect we'd go with one of the talls in Busslinger, Scully or Lemmy.

Still a bit to play out with Scully, it will be interesting to see how he goes at the championships/reserves/league level when he is playing against higher quality opponents. At the moment he is dominating in the SANFL under 18's at the moment, because he is often playing on kids who are 15+cm smaller and 10+kg lighter than him.

My biggest concern (mainly because I haven't seen him play on genuine defenders) is that I'm not sure he has that King Twins level of contested marking ability.
Lemmy = the motorhead

Isaac Keeler I reckon has the most upside of anyone in this draft

Keen to see how he goes in the champs to press for that early pick

Quick info blast pls? Skimming the thread at work
Tall athletic forward with a big leap

Soup has described him as Goodes who can play further up the ground and use his athleticism which would create mismatches

I see him as a mix between Goodes and a young buddy franklin

Hi Souup,
I asked on another forum about Albury's best chances for being drafted this year with no respons. After having two picked up in last years MSD, Euriah Hollard, Ryan Eyers and Toby Murray seem the areas best chances over all being selected in the young guns games. How did they play, and what are your thoughts on their chances?

Hey mate sorry for the late response.

Euriah Hollard I like, but feel his biggest issue will be that he doesn't have an athletic point of difference. He works hard, but he's not particularly quick over a short distance and isn't particularly impressive overhead. The other element is he doesn't hit the scoreboard enough - this is partly probably due to the fact he tends to work high up the ground for decent periods throughout games. He's a real handy footballer who has shown great improvement from last year to this year, but I think he needs to find something that sets him apart. My guess is he doesn't get picked up, but he's a chance for sure and the best chance of the 3 players you've listed.

Ryan Eyers is one I've mentioned in the past as a potential KPD at the next level, but my concern is whether he can athletically go with the best tall forwards at the next level. He's a little slow off the mark and needs to work on his fitness, but he's a good size and I do think there's something there to work with.

For Murray, basically copy + paste what I said for Ryan Eyers here regarding question marks over his athleticism at the next level. The additional problem with Murray is that he's playing a decent amount in the ruck, but there's no chance he's a ruckman at AFL level with him only coming in at <200cm.

All 3 are some of the better performers at NAB League level, but you'd expect that from guys coming back over-age.

Thanks for all that Souup. Key position defenders are obviously a big need for us, but from the looks of that it's pretty slim pickings if we don't go for Busslinger at the top, with just Hayes and Van Es in the 40s looking genuine KPD size. We'd have to conjure up extra picks in the 40s / 50s anyway and work them around the Harvey bid, but is there either of those two in particular that you think suit our list needs? Or any other KPDs that currently sit outside your top 50 that might be worth keeping an eye on?

If (when) we finish in the bottom 2 would you try and split the pick, or are the top 3 clearly better than the next grouping? and/or is our need for Busslinger and the apparent shortage of promising KPD prospects a strong enough reason to keep it and take the Buss (if available)

I see “split the pick” mentioned a few times but it doesn’t feel helpful to us unless teams have an early and then a mid first rounder, nobody does this year. The only team with multiples is Sydney and they both look like being late. That can change with trading of course but we’re probably always better having more scope to choose.

I think there's real opportunity and value in selecting mature-aged defenders from state leagues with late selections and rookie draft picks. Some examples of guys just in the VFL I think could develop into AFL-standard key defenders or 2nd/3rd tall types would be guys like Ethan Phillips, Jack Maibum and Mitch Podhajski. This is on top of guys who are already having their names thrown into the mid-season draft ring like El Nour and Will Reinhold.

I like some of the key defenders outside of Busslinger, but I think in terms of value, I think a late pick on a state league guy is the play.

Our club will know, for the most part, where most clubs in the top ~6-8 will be leaning with their selections. That sort of knowledge should govern what we do with our picks, based on where we rate particular players.

I have Busslinger as worthy of #1 overall, but there's a chance no other club with a top 5-6 pick see it that way - maybe none of them have him top 8, and so in that case, we'd be negligent not to consider trading back if we get a good deal if we feel we rate Busslinger higher than anyone else. On the other hand, Busslinger might be hot property and every club in the top 5 have him as a top 3 prospect, so we just need to use our pick on him if we consider him our guy.

It will depend on what our draft board/tiers look like and what we think those around our pick are thinking.
