Kiera Mueller… haven’t seen much at all, saw her in defence for the SA U/18s and in the grand final for Sturt, looked fairly raw as a player. Lots of defenders on the list so will be a fair way back in the pack.

Only 165cm though so it's not like she'll be competing with the likes of Allan, Randall, Rajcic or Biddell for a spot. I guess she's a replacement for the role Gore was playing.

Still, if she is a bit raw that's not a bad thing. Stick her in our system training under the likes of the aforementioned names and she should be good!

Kustermann is an exciting pickup! Adds to our wealth of players with significant leadership experience, too.

I'm not all that excited with Dowrick but I guess she's an experienced forward option which could be useful given we lost Phillips.

I am sure this is written somewhere, but guessing Adelaide traded picks for players given we only had one pick?

Every club was required to take at least three list vacancies into the draft (you could pass if you wanted and pick up free agents). We did trade some picks for players, but the only real effect it had was moving our second pick out from 7th overall to 8th overall.

Kustermann looks like she wouldn't be far off from being ready to go from early in the season?

I imagine she would be about as ready as, say, Ballard was this past season. Generally described as having no real flaws in her game and has played consistently at a high level for years.

Another benefit to picking her, she's a top-ager so she's already finished year 12. That means she'll be able to focus primarily on playing footy this year. By contrast, five of Port's seven players are doing year 12 this year and will be approaching their exams as the season progresses.

The next milestones for Season 7 is Jersey Number Allocations and then update AFC website. This might occur today after training.

Here are more bold predictions which are likely to go up in smoke.

One player changes number.
Number 3 to Anne Hatchard.
Number 7 to Niamh Kelly.
Decision on Number 9. Currently with both Deni Varnhagen and McKenzie Dowrick. Move Dowrick.
Number 13 to Rest in Season 7 save undue comparisons for the new player.
Number 18 to McKenzie Dowrick. Worn or allocated to previously Monique Hollick, Becharra Palmer and Ruth Wallace. One of three Jersey Numbers not to win a premiership at AFC.
Number 23 to Keeley Kustermann
Number 29 to Kiera Mueller. New number never worn at AFC.
Number 33 to Amber Ward. She wore 33 at WCE

PS - 18, 21 and 45 are the 3 non premiership numbers

Saw the other day Niamh Kelly has already confirmed on her Instagram she’ll be wearing Mules’ former number 23

Our fixture has us playing:

Melbourne (2nd on ladder last year)
Richmond (11th)
North Melbourne (4th)
Collingwood (6th)
GWS (9th)
Port Adelaide (new)
Fremantle (5th)
Brisbane (3rd)
Geelong (12th)
St Kilda (13th)

As expected we have a brutal draw playing all the top 6 teams and only getting 1 of the 4 new expansion clubs

Very similar draw to the last season. Grand Final rematch in round one, moderately challenging middle period and then two difficult matches in a row near the end of the season. Geelong and St Kilda is a fairly soft finish though.

Do we know which matches are home games yet? I gather Port are playing away in round 1 so hopefully our match against Melbourne will be at home.

Edit: Just checked. We're home in odd rounds and away in even rounds. That's actually pretty handy for us. Means we get home games against likely finalists Melbourne, Freo and North (but away games against Brisbane and Collingwood). It also means we only travel four times because one of our away games is the Showdown at Adelaide Oval.

How does it compare to the other contending clubs?

How does it compare to the other contending clubs?

Similar but probably slightly more difficult than Melbourne and Brisbane.

Melbourne play: Crows (away), North (home), Saints (away), Brisbane (home), Carlton (away), Freo (away), Bulldogs (home), Suns (home), Essendon (home), Eagles (away).

Pretty tough first six rounds having to play Crows, Brisbane, Freo and North, including travelling to SA and WA, but super soft landing with Suns, Essendon and Eagles to finish the year. They get to avoid playing Collingwood. Essendon the only expansion club they play.

Brisbane play: Freo (home), Giants (away), Suns (home), Melbourne (away), Richmond (away), Essendon (home), North (away), Crows (home), Hawthorn (away), Collingwood (home)

Still playing the other real contending clubs (Freo, Melbourne, Crows, North, Collingwood) but have it spaced out over the season. They somehow get to play two expansion clubs.

Freo play: Brisbane (away), Geelong (home), Bulldogs (away), Carlton (home), Eagles (away), Melbourne (home), Crows (away), Collingwood (home), Sydney (away), Hawthorn (home)

Freo also get to play two expansion clubs, and get to avoid playing North.

North play: Suns (home), Melbourne (away), Crows (away), Geelong (home), Bulldogs (away), Sydney (home), Brisbane (home), Port (away), Collingwood (away), Richmond (home)

North get to play two expansion clubs too. They travel to SA twice.

Collingwood play: Carlton (away), Sydney (home), Geelong (away), Crows (home), Essendon (home), Saints (away), Giants (home), Freo (away), North (home), Brisbane (away)

Collingwood get a super gentle start to the season, with Crows in round 4 their only really difficult match until the final three rounds Expect them to be 6-1 after round 7 and potentially sitting on top of the table. Two expansion clubs.

Honestly, I can't wait for the media to pump up the first showdown only to have a whole state of pear supporters watch their team struggle to score a goal and get flogged. Its going to be a long season for Port.

Port have an interesting fixture, actually.

West Coast (away)
Bulldogs (home)
Carlton (away)
Sydney (home)
Suns (away)
Crows (home)
Hawthorn (away)
North (home)
Saints (away)
Essendon (home)

It seems likely they could lose three of their first four home games, as Bulldogs, Crows and North are all good sides. They will really want to hit the ground running with an away win against West Coast, who were clearly the worst side prior to expansion, otherwise they're likely to start 0-3.

I can't see too many changes to the contending teams from the season just gone. Crows have managed to stay strong with Port only able to raid our lesser known players, Melbourne and Brisbane will be strong. The unknowns really will be Fremantle, Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne.

Melbourne has probably improved from last season, Brisbane has stayed roughly the same, and our only major loss was Phillips. I agree they'll be the three main contenders, and North, Freo and Collingwood are always a chance. I don't have much faith in Bulldogs, Carlton or Gold Coast bridging the gap and then it falls away pretty quickly from there.

I think Port wont win a game aside from maybe beating a fellow expansion team. They only have 1 star player and she is cooked. West Coast and other sides who have at least had one more year would have had full preseasons and an extra year of playing the game plan. Its not a bad thing if Port lose nearly all their games. They have a lot of development to do and if anyone thinks they will resemble the Power mens side they will be seriously disappointed. They will need to hit the draft and trade over multiple seasons to build up the star talent the top teams have.

They're a good chance against Sydney and Hawthorn. I think Essendon will account for them, out of the expansion teams.

Most of the established teams will be superior

The state based draft preference system really makes it hard for expansion teams. The AFL should make it like the mens. Isn't much of an excuse to keep it now. They need to give every club an equal chance to build a list.
