Hardwick has beat every single small forward this year. Should make squad at least.
Lockdown smalls never get in. Bews has done similar but AA selectors value disposal totals from HBF to get in the team.

Small defenders who defend have never been well represented in the All Australian team or squad
Off the top of my head: Nick Smith from the Swans. I can't think of anyone else. [edit: Brad Sheppard, thanks hawkman]

AA selectors have always had a big hard-on for selecting the running half back flankers with flashy skills and neat disposal
More of the same this year with Sinclair, Dale, Docherty, Saad, Dawson, Rioli, Daicos, etc.

Saad and Sinclair are both more than capable defensively and do work both ways.

No small or medium defender comes close to Hardwick. We are a poor team and our opponents get huge numbers of inside 50s yet Hardwick has conceded about a dozen goals all year.

He is so far ahead of the pack but only gets 12 or 15 disposals so wont get a defender spot. Because everyone knows the best defenders can leak goals as long as they get 25 possies a game.

less goals and assists though, what else does Lynch do that puts him ahead of Hawkins as an AA forward?
After round 20 Lynch is only 4 goals behind Hawkins but has played 4 games less. He has a higher goals per game, 2.9 vs 2.7 and is the leading contested mark player in the league. If he played those 4 games at his average he might be up around 57-59 goals. Academic because he didn't but he is in the conversation.

Hardwick you reckon?

Lets see how he goes next week against Shai

No he is not.

he does not play for Geelong.

if he did he would be in

No he is not.

he does not do anything that impacts the scoreboard beyond his goals. He does not get involved in score chains and get the ball to the advantage of his teammates, he does not win ruck contests, he does not directly lay off more goals than any other key forward as Hawkins does, and as we all know, taking a contested mark doesn’t add extra points to whatever happens when you dispose of the ball

if he did he would be in

Couldn’t agree more. Well written

The best defenders create far more scores than they concede. That’s the modern game.

You can't really complain. Gutless Dog Stewart has more AA jackets than he's had direct opponents, the weak sniping gutless zone-off coward.

Daniel Rioli inked into the 18 now. All you shiteaters can eat s**t.

Stats simply do not back his claims up. Sinclair, Docherty, Stewart and others have had far more consistent seasons.

Have you got those stats for goals conceded and scores created for defenders?

I assume an average defender in a very good team gets way more score involvements than a very good defender in a bad team.

So we fill the AA with Geelong's backline?

And Hardwick and other lockdown defenders miss out if the mids in their team arent that good.

You sound like one of the clueless selectors.

Anyone without Hardwick in their side is clueless? Yeah right.

I agree with you on Hardwick he's an absolute stud. Does his job every week.

But Maynard does the same just as good and statistically wins more 1 on 1s than anyone.

Id say most people would have him as Collingwood's most likely AA. Has had a great year. Not a flashy player like Howe, just gets it done.
