They do take it into account. Pretty sure if a forward has 20 goals in four games against them and 30 in their other 18 games the selection panel will be aware of it they don’t just look at a stats sheet at years’ end and blindly name a team

Yet how often do they place players in positions in which they do not play, simply to ensure they make the cut. I wouldn’t be so quick to assume that they any fixed checks in place.

1-2 times a year. And so they should. If someone deserves selection and is versatile enough to get another position I have no problem with it

Cripps' goalkicking has come from nowhere but is looking like a real element to his game now

3 goals

averaging 2 goals a game and yet to go goalless. so good to see

Good on him he's made a real effort to fix it up. It was a liability the past two seasons but now he is getting it done.

Yup. Apparently there were 2 fractured vertebrae that were causing him to alter his kicking and running action. It's all healed up now and it seems to be making a difference. Farcical we let him play hurt.

Seeing a few of you putting Angus Brayshaw in made me wonder when was (if at all) the last time brothers made the same AA team?

first team (I think) of the year

Stewart - Pearce - Docherty
Crisp - May - Short
Langdon - Oliver - Brayshaw (Melb)
Petracca - Lynch - Boak
Fritsch - Hawkins - Bolton
Gawn (C) - Cripps (VC) - Neale
Brayshaw (Freo) - Green - Heaney - McCluggage
E: Keays

Bolton, Tracc and Short in wrong spots imo, but ill use it to get them in.
No way Fritsch is in at this stage. Quite a few ahead of him.

J.Cameron was my other option, but it felt a little tall.
was tempted to put Wright in given can ruck, super accurate and sits 4th despite playing in the worst inside 50 team in the comp. But also, tall.

on second viewing, Charlie Cameron has had some season with the inside 50 work...ill swap them out

Wondering where Trac sits in your view this year? Not able to hit a HFF if you don't think he's been as good a mid as the others?

I’d have said he’s in the mix, but from what I’ve watched of Melbourne (6 matches?), he’s been a bit hot and cold.

And has been (from what I’ve seen) far more midfielder than half-forward so far this year (say even compared to last)

EDIT: Cameron in

Good side and definately the right call to swap Fritsch out. In fact, I don't think Fritsch would even make the squad at this point.

Tall forwards definately ahead are Lynch, Hawkins, Cameron, Wright, Naughton, King, McKay and a few others.
Small/Medium forwards definately ahead are Heeney, Bolton, Cameron, Moore, Higgins, Bailey and arguably a few more. Hell, even Tyson Stengle is having a better season to date in my view.

That of course is ignoring the fact that midfielders get slotted in to the forward spots as well every year.

The most noticeable difference is that he can now kick the ball 55-60m. Last 2 years he was struggling to kick it 50m. One game he could only kick it left foot (which was not pretty)

30+ and 2 goals/game. Should be favourite for the Brownlow by far. Probably best on ground in (nearly?) all full games he played.

Was super risky. Seemed to have gotten away with it. What a beast.
He is great to watch. Used to get and handball off while injured, but at least he got it. Now gets it and runs away and disposes beautifully. Machine

Time to start coming to terms with Angus Brayshaw being the 6th Demons player in the 22

Yeah, like I said... maybe vice captain because he skippers one of the top teams. We've seen that in previous years with Travis Boak, Shannon Hurn, Tom Harley. I wouldn't say he's the "obvious" choice as VC with Gawn as captain. I think the selectors would be more likely to give that honour to Cripps, Hawkins or Pendles (if he gets in)

Zorko is a not a top 10 player in the comp. Never has been. He is not a 5-time, 6-time All Australian... He made the AA team ONCE back in 2017
He does not make anyone's list for Top 3 best captains in the AFL (which is a wank, but the public perception is everything)

He is not even one of Brisbane's top 5 players. They've got Neale, McCluggage, Lyons in the middle, Daniher & Cameron up forward and Andrews & Rich in defence

All Australian captains

I agree with everything but 2 things.

Pendles won't make the AA team. Zorko is easily top 5 for us. That's coming from someone who doesn't believe he should be captain (I am not his biggest fan).

This season has been a master-stroke from the coaches throwing him to half back. He has been instrumental in our closer games. Does alot of pressure work for an old bloke. Zorks has resurrected his career as he was looking very ordinary and slow.

Not saying he will make the AA team. But can't see many reasons why he can't be considered.

Can't say I agree with this. Players should be the best in that position throughout the season. I understand some players are versatile enough to play mid/fwd or wing/mid but some players who owned the wing position last season missed a jumper because they put midfielders on the wing. Just my opinion. We can disagree its ok.

I think that's a pretty good efort for where things stand. Minor gripes are I think Brayshaw deserves a starting spot given the year he's having and we know they probably arent going 1 actual wing, yet alone 2 but every player named has a good case for a spot.

I'm really really interested to see where Freo players end up at the end of the year if we finish top 4. Brayshaw feels like the only lock, but how many top 4 teams have only one player make the team? Probably more than I realise

I reckon Tracs chances has slimmed, he can’t get in the HF line or Wing imo he’s no way near damaging enough. How can somebody average 30.6 disposals for only 0.9 goals so far this year in their prime is beyond me. This only leaves the centre line which isn’t looking likely atm or the bench.

Nah. 1 goal a game is enough to get named half forward. Depends how the actual small forwards go as to whether they chuck a mid there but if they do it will likely be him.

Funnily enough just last year Brisbane finished 4th with only Rich in the team. Had the couple in the squad I think and a couple who were arguably close (like Cameron for a small forward spot) but cant complain too much.

Basically the sign of a good even side that shares the load a lot

There you go, probs on Brayshaw for us with 3 or 4 more in the squad

I'm with you on this, I don't mind the HFF being a mid/fwd who goes onball but also spends time up forward and kicks a fair few goals, but a specialist role like the wing I don't like shoehorning someone in. Put an actual mid on the wing and they're not doing what a winger actually does.
