With First Overall Pick the Jacksonville Select

1. Aidan Hutchison, DE, MICHIGAN • SR • 6'7" / 260 LBS

Selecting no 1 you either go with a QB or Best Player Available since Jaguars selected Trevor Lawrence last year to be their star QB the Jaguars grab the most complete and talented pass rusher in the draft.
Hutchinson was phenomenal in 2021, leading one of the best defenses in the nation and pushing Michigan to a Big Ten championship. In his final season with the Wolverines, Hutchinson totaled 62 tackles, 14 sacks, three passes batted, a fumble recovered and two forced fumble - another one was mistakenly given to a teammate. Teaming with Josh Allen should give the Jaguars a great pass rush for the next decade.

With the 2nd overall pick, the Detroit Lions select Kayvon Thibodeaux, EDGE, Oregon

kayvon-thibodeaux-ato.jpg

I get the impression that the draft community is probably higher on Kayvon than the league is, and I think that there are probably better players in the same tier available, but things like positional value, roster construction and path to playing time do matter. The Lions sorely need pass rush help, and while I'm sure they'd love to have the chance to pick their hometown guy in Hutchison, Thibodeaux is a good next pick.

Here's hoping that he lives up to the hype that was surrounding him at the start of the 2021 college season and that the "he doesn't love ball enough" concerns are just a old guy anachronism.

With the 3rd overall pick, the Texans select:

Kyle Hamilton, S, Notre Dame

Kids a freak good and proper. I reckon he has some unusually long arms and that gives him some great play-making ability, but has a nose for the turnover all the same. Plays faster than he looks, play diagnosis makes him seem a step faster, read and reacts well, and seems to have a knack for splitting gaps. Smart, mature guy too, knows he's still got work to do.

Am I crazy taking a Safety at #3?? Possibly, not something I would've considered in most drafts, but the Texans need help everywhere, so I go BPA.

With pick #4 in the 2022 NFL draft, the New York Jets select Travon Walker, DE, Georgia State Bulldogs

4d70044b1b0367a0ff68ecb04d3d1e3c

Walker has been a riser up the boards since the college season ended and he ends his rise at pick #4.

The Jets signed Carl Lawson away from the Bengals in the 2021 free agency period, only to see him suffer a season-ending injury before the season began. The Jets barely got to the QB during the 2021 season, finishing plum last with sacks and quarterback pressures, and Saleh's defence was leaky through the season.

In the 2022 NFL free agency period, the Jets signed Jacob Martin away from Houston to be a part-time pass rusher, and are banking on Lawson returning to the type of form that earned him a big contract from the Jets last season.

However, you can't have too many pass rushers, and Walker fits the bill nicely. He measured in at 6'5", 272lb at the recent NFL combine, and he completed the 40 yard dash in 4.51 seconds. The college production doesn't match the athletic capacity that Walker put on tape at the combine just yet (only 9.5 career sacks in college including six sacks in 2021), but his Relative Athletic Score was 9.99 (out of 10), ranking Walker third among 1,389 defensive ends to go through the draft process between 1987 and 2022. Walker will give the Jets some scheme versatility as he is equally capable of playing on the edge as on the inside, and he also completed some linebacker drills while showcasing his skills at the Georgia Pro Day. His pass rushing technique will require some refinement, as he does tend to wait too long to shed blocks and his power as a pass-rusher is inconsistent at the moment. However, the Jets need the help on the edge and will find ways to get Walker involved in the defence early and often in the season.

Evan Neal - OL - ‘Bama

Giants seem intent on giving Danny Dimes another year. If they want him to be able to show what he has they’re going to need to bolster the right side of the line with Thomas at LT.

Neal could go as high as 1, so some value here.

Ikem Ekwonu - LT - NC State

Lets do this again shall we since you didnt want to listen to me and take all pro Rashawn Slater last year.

Ekwonu brings a nasty streak and upgrades any lines attitude instantly, not satisfied with just having his running back take the ball on a 5 yard plus carry he looks to embarrass the poor defensive player hes assigned to block.

With a PFF grades of 93.8 for run blocking and 78.3 at pass blocking its obvious his strength lays in run blocking first, I have seen people suggest he should be moved to guard which I think is ridiculous, Ekwonu has the least amount of snaps at LT out of the big names and still shows great promise as a pass protector, hes also a very smart kid who was offered a scholarship to Harvard, with a bit of quality coaching I think he has all the tools, smarts and attitude to become one of the best (If not the best) LT's in the NFL.

The sky is the limit.

Malik Willis QB Liberty

Because Marcus Mariota is not the answer...... Willis has a cannon for an arm and often makes up for his missed reads by powering the ball into gaps in the defense. He is an explosive athlete on designed runs and does a good job evading the rush and escaping in a throwing position. He needs more time to become a quicker decision maker and improve his throwing footwork to improve his accuracy.

Personally this is too high for my liking but when your QB is Marcus Mariota in a QB driven league you can never have too many swings at guys with the ceiling of Malik Willis.

This was a tough choice as no matter where you look at the Seahawks roster there are massive holes everywhere. There has been a decent cleanout to go with Russell Wilson heading to Denver and it is going to take multiple drafts to sort out the roster. If there was a QB worth taking I would but it seems like the FO are happy with Lock and there is still a bit of noise around Baker Mayfield (despite apparently preferring Carolina who don't want him) so taking a QB at this point in time is counterproductive. Still, this is a toss of the coin whether to go defence or give whoever the QB will be more protection and I have struggled massively with this decision. I have also done a write up for the player on either side of the ball I am tossing up between to see if that helps my decision (spoiler alert: it didn’t). Hell, even the Seahawk fandom are split between Willis and a handful of players on either side of the ball. IRL I think the FO either do their usual trade down for extra picks or go their usual left field or reach. Having said that, in the end I don’t really think you can go wrong with either player so:

With the 9th pick, The Seattle Seahawks select,

Charles Cross - T - Mississippi State

nbc_pft_charlescrossv2_220303_1920x1080.jpg

Seattle’s issues with the o-line have been well documented over the years and it never seems to be an area they can correct. For too long they have prioritised defence at the expense of giving Russell Wilson protection and it is only because of his scrambling ability that Seattle has had any success on offence. Well, the last couple of seasons have shown what a Seahawks offence looks like without Wilson scrambling and saying it is not pretty is an understatement. With him now gone the Seahawks have no excuse for not shoring up the offensive line in a division where they face ridiculous defences that have mauled them year after year. In Charles Cross the Seahawks get an absolute stud of a tackle that has performed to a high level against some of the best defences in college football. In over 900 snaps in 2021 he only allowed 2 sacks and no QB hits which was down from 6 sacks and 5 hits from 200 less snaps in 2020. The increase in production from 2020 to 2021 is encouraging and Seattle will be hoping to see that translate to the NFL. Cross by himself is not enough to protect whoever is going to be the Seahawks QB but it is a start.

With pick #10, the New York Jets select Garrett Wilson, WR, Ohio State University

garrett-wilson-ohio-state.jpg

Turns out that the Jets offered pick #10 to the Chiefs as part of a package deal for Tyreek Hill (which was rejected in favour of the Jets' two second round picks and a third round pick, which the Chiefs accepted but the Jets couldn't come to terms with Hill).

So the Jets use their second pick in the first round (courtesy of the Seattle Seahawks) to add an exciting weapon for Zach Wilson. Wilson (of the Garrett variety) played mostly slot in 2020, catching 43 passes and averaging almost 17 yards per reception. But in 2021, the Buckeyes used Garrett Wilson more as an outside receiver, and he exploded. He had 70 catches for 1058 yards and 12 touchdowns, including six scores in his last three games as a college receiver.

Wilson was quick at the Combine across the 40 yard dash without being blazing fast (4.38 seconds), and he recorded 4.36 seconds in the 20 yard shuttle. He has the archetypal size for a NFL receiver, measuring in at 6'0" and weighing 183lbs, with 32" arms.

Wilson excelled at a variety of sports at high school, having received Division I college basketball scholarship offers during his final year of highschool. He enrolled at OSU a semester early and played in all 14 games as a true freshman in the autumn of 2019 (30 catches, 423 yards, five receiving touchdowns, 14 punt returns, 86 yards). In the COVID-shortened season of 2020, he started all eight games, receiving first team All-Big Ten Conference accolades.

His technique as a wide receiver requires some polishing, but his breakaway speed is electric and there's plenty of tape to suggest that he has the ability to run away from defenders in the NFL and to create space for himself.

With Pick #11 your Washington Commanders select Drake London WR - USC • JR • 6'4" / 219 LBS

With no Owner or Team name being value with our pick we decide to draft a weapon for our new QB in Wentz. London, 6-foot-4 and my top-ranked wideout, had 88 catches for 1,084 yards in eight games in 2021 before a broken right ankle ended his season. He can be a weapon in the red zone. He offers a unique matchup that the other wideout's due to size and his basketball background than the other Washington Receivers do. Him and Terry McLaurin could form the best duo of wr in the nfl within 2 seasons.

Athletic Man mountain who will be a force on the interior Defensive line in the NFL.

Rare body type and length. Will be bigger than almost every offensive lineman he faces off against, even at the NFL level. Long arms help keep offensive linemen out of his frame.

With the Vikings strengthening their pass rush off the edge in FA, adding a force in the middle of the defensive front will give them an edge at the line of scrimmage

Hyped up as being a lock Top 5 pick after a stellar freshman season in 2019, Stingley Jr hasn't quite lived up to the hype more recently in large part due to injuries. A player coming off a Lisfranc injury isn't a deal-breaker for Ravens GM Eric De Costa (Hollywood Brown was his first ever official draft pick and he sustained a Lisfranc injury in his final college season too), and EDC loves building from the secondary forward. If healthy and locked in, Stingley would be a steal at this slot.

Not a sexy pick here, but with the release of Bryan Bulaga last week this becomes a need in the hyper competitive AFC West. Recent FA signings by the Bolts improved the defense and those defenders available around this point don't really fit the Chargers. So, I'd imagine the Chargers would look to help Herbert out more.
With Penning and last years pick, Slater, at tackles the Chargers have a good foundation on the line.
Penning had a good combine and is an intelligent player with good mobility/motor and has a competitive nasty streak and should serve the Chargers well.

Saints have holes to fill in a lot of positions.
They need a WR with speed and the ability to take the top off a D with a deep threat.
Williams gives them that, sure we all know that he popped his ACL, but the surgery and recovery have come along way and theses injuries are not as severe as they once were.

At the end of the day if the Saints are backing Jameis in ........ then they need to give he a new toy or two.

With the 19th overall pick, the Philadelphia Eagles select Nakobe Dean, OLB, Georgia

Decided to go all in on defensive areas of need & I will be disappointed if one of the Birds 1st round picks isn't devoted to Linebacker. Dean ticks all the boxes so if he still there at 19, sweet jebus just do it Howie.

Daxton Hill S Michigan

Versatile player. Able to play all positions in defensive backfield.

— Has adequate coverage skills to play man from outside or in slot.

— Good tackling ability. Wrap tackler who also can run through ball-carrier.

—Plays with good aggression and physicality. Throws his body around. Very good run recognition and in-block destruction.

In a league full of elite athletes, Hill might be as elite as it gets. The Michigan S had the highest SPARQ rating in the 2019 recruiting class. Among other things, he logged a 4.3 40-yard dash and a 43-inch vertical, as well as a 4.13 20-yard shuttle
Beyond his speed and explosiveness, Hill is also exceptionally fluid. He’s extremely smooth and quick transitioning out of his backpedal. He can flip his hips and explode in an instant. This hip fluidity shows up downfield, where he’s shown he can flip and stick to receivers with ease. Hill can be an eraser in the deep third, but his combination of explosiveness and fluidity is also conducive to success in the box.

With the 21st Pick New England select:

Devon Lloyd - LB - Utah.

The Patriots have a few holes in the list that need attention and two of the positions of need have already seen a few of my first choices gone.

The linebacker core needs a bit of a refresh and Lloyd has the versatility that BB coverts.
He has good football IQ and suits a real need as the Patriots move on from Hightower, Collins and Van Noy.
The Patriots are in a rebuild and BB has a history of starting with the front seven, so this pick fits on that front as well.

Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas

With the loss of MVS, we now really desperately need some WR help. Even if Valdes-Scantling re-signed, I think I'd still be making the same pick though. To me, he seems to be a less polished version of Adams. He can make tough catches after adjusting, he can make moves to create seperation and sometimes will just blow past people. Bit more of a threat on the Jet sweep too. Some may worry about the 4.55 40, but he definitely plays faster than that, just need to watch him go the distance full tilt to ease any worries.

Was seriously thinking about packaging the 22 + 28 or 2nd rd to move to the 10-15 range to potentially get London, but the more I see Burks, the happier I am to stay put and wait for him. May have to trade up a little to get him in real life, but I'd be ok with that.

With Pick 23, Arizona Cardinals select Chris Olave, Wide Receiver Ohio State

Chris-Olave.jpeg

The Cardinals lost Christian Kirk in FA and as good as Hopkins is, can you trust him to play a full season? If he cant Arizona is not Deep at WR. Olave is a receiver who just produces big numbers whenever he plays.

936 yards and 13 TDs last year, hes a brilliant intermediate route threat.

Perhaps the Carindals could have topped up the Edge/DE threat with Chandler Jones moving on, but with the true Rd 1 value gone, will address in later rounds.

Iowa Center Tyler Linderbaum

Iowa center Tyler Linderbaum jumps off the screen when you watch him. The 2021 Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year isn't a physically imposing player at 6-2, 296 pounds.

He's successful because of his movement ability and how Iowa used him. Linderbaum is currently projected to go somewhere around the 12th pick in the draft by most experts, . If he is selected in the first round, he'll become the first center selected in round one that weighs less than 300 pounds. Even with his low weight taken into consideration, he is pretty unanimously listed as the best interior offensive lineman in this class and for good reason.
He has a nastiness to him and is always looking to finish his blocks. He is a tone setter in the run game despite his small stature. For fans who like to see their offensive lineman putting other guys into the ground, he is for you.
