Shuey has been a wonderful servant of our club, and his last game suggested he still has a fair amount of fuel in the tank
However, his soft tissue injuries are a worry, and he needs to concentrate to get his body right.

So, 2 years at the helm for Luke Shuey and its time to make a move to the next captain.

I think there is only one legitimate candidate:

It makes sense - he will be fully fit for the start of 2022, at 28 years of age he will fill the void for 2-4 years until the next leader emerges.
NN is too old now, Gov ditto, the others are either not ready or introverts.

Maybe Elliot is a bit polarizing due to his singular passion and can rub some the wrong way, but if you want a leader, someone that can inspire the others, look no further than his last few games after getting over his OP.

Thoughts?

Whilst I think Shuey should probably hand the captaincy over to concentrate more on getting back to full fitness I don't think him or the club will put that forward, I think he will at least get the gig for another season.

I believe Yeo should be our next Captain, but I can't see them moving Shuey on from the role in 2022. However, we need our nominated Captain out there playing footy more than the 7 games we got from him in 2021.

75% TOG from his R23 game was his biggest for the year, and perhaps he'll be rejuvenated by a change in role and position. He needs something to build on, but like many of our players he needs to get his body right.

No. The Captain of an AFL club needs to lead on the field but equally, they need to be the face and voice of the club in front of a camera. Anybody that has heard Yeo speak would understand that he is not that man. Great footy player but not that sharp between the ears is old Yeoy.

Shuey will captain next year and I think they will fast track Allen to take over in 2023. Duggan still a chance too.

I don't agree with that at all. Yeo has matured greatly over the years, and you can't forget we had Bunga as captain who sounds half asleep and just wheeling out the same simple lines ad nauseum.

Yeo isn't afraid to verbalise his aspirations, and win at all costs mentality. We haven't had a captain like that since Cuz. He actually sounds like he gives a shit and takes losing personally.

Agree to disagree. He may have matured but he hasn't gotten any smarter. Bunga speaks well, just has a country drawl but he is intelligent and articulate.
Being a captain you need to tow the line. Yeo is even less likely to get the gig if he speaks his mind over the messaging the club wants put out in the media. thats just the way professional sporting organisations are now.

Yeo loses his cool and isn't known to be the sharpest tool in the shed.

With Shuey and injuries i've actually come full circle and quite like the dual captaincy model. Have Shuey and Nicnat as joint Captains.

Whenever a player talks about Yeo, they almost without exception refer to him as a strange cat or annoying. Would be a good VC pick imo, but too much of a turbo to be captain.

Nic is the obvious choice - I don't even hate the idea of him and Shuey for co-captains, but it's not our way.

I expect it will be Shuey until a younger player takes over. Still think it's likely to be Duggan, who seems more emotionally intelligent, well liked across the board and hard at it. Barrass might be left-field choice, respected, smart and going off what the boys have been saying on the Podcasts, a fierce competitor.

Not sure if we really have an obvious choice at the moment, with Duggan somewhat plateauing. Then again, Hurn wasn't the obvious choice and he was an exceptional captain.

We clearly had a lift for the games NN was captain for - maybe thats saying something? He did take a paycut for the sake of the club, he is universally loved, he is the heartbeat of the club - but how many years has he got left realistically - i think 1 maybe 2? And sometimes the captaincy can thwart some players performance, maybe not him though on available evidence.

As Salo insinuated above - you would never have picked Toby Greene over Stephen Coniglio 2 years ago but he has proven to be a better captain. Stephen is a model citizen, speaks well, but is he respected universally within the team especially the young blokes?

Also i dont know about the undisciplined thing. Sure Yeo gives away frees but he's also got a lot of mongrel and he would stand up for his team mates. The way he rag-dolled Joe D on the weekend was great to see.

Also, he's never done a single thing off field to bring any heat on the club. Not a single thing.

Plus, most importantly, he has a haircut you can set your watch to.
